At judging, the girls were given a test for Umeboshi (similar to a pickled prune). They taste salty, and are extremely sour due to high citric acid content, and have been known to corrode their way through aluminium lunch boxes if kept in the same spot every day.
The translator during the commerical shoot is replaced during judging, probably (as Nicole points out) her English isn't much better than the director's.
This episode is named for all of the girls who get to meet actor Taye Diggs.
Yaya won this week's competition which was doing a cold reading with Taye Diggs. As a prize, she got to travel to Tokyo in luxury class. Yaya shared the prize with Amanda.
Call out order: Ann Eva Norelle Amanda Nicole and Yaya were in the bottom two; Yaya for spitting out the Umeboshi during the commerical test, and Nicole for not being memorable. In fact, both Tyra and the acting coach forget about her during the judging. In the end, Nicole was eliminated.
Eva: (doing a commercial in Japanese) 'Suzuki washi-tashi?!' Like, did I just say that? I feel so stupid!
Tanslator: After you hear the, 'start', you can start. Yaya: What's 'start' in Japansese? Tanslator: 'Start'.
Nicole: The translator's kinda like, "Yeah, yeah, I speak English." (laughs) Kinda.
Norelle: The first thing we saw was a hospital bed. Prepare to die? I'm sorry, but I am not a good die-er.
Tyra: (To Yaya) I suggest you go to the nearest bakery in Japan and order up the biggest slice of humble pie.
Nolé (About Eva): In your commercial, she was an absolute Tokyo disaster. Tyra: She was a typhoon! Nolé: She was a typhoon, a byphoon, she was a cocoa puff mess.
Amanda: I just look like a pair of ears on an onion.
Yaya: There's one person eliminated every single time. And that one person should not be me. And if it is, I need to have a talk with the judges.
Norelle: I can barely speak English, and you want me to speak Japanese?
Norelle: I don't know if they're called Japanese people are from Tokyo, or Tokyians?
Taye: (after Amanda 'comes alive' after dying) Julia? Julia? That's a cruel trick. That's a cruel trick, Julia.
Nicole: (about the acting exercise) The first thing I saw was not appropriate, so I had to just say I didn't see anything.
According to interviews with the models and ATNM producer Ken Mok, when the girls landed in Tokyo they were questioned by customs about their trip. Since they didn't know how to answer (as they are kept in the dark for the element of surprise on the show) customs officials thought they were prostitutes and held them for questioning for 3 days!
Covergirl of the Week was Eva.
Norelle: I had this disease, supercalifragilicious-expealidocious. 'Supercalifragilicious-expealidocious' is a word made famous by the 1964 Disney classic, Mary Poppins.
