    • TRIVIA (2)

      ADD TRIVIA
      • We learn a lot about the Force Lances in this episode. They are genetically keyed to their owners, and any attempt by someone else to use them results in a capacitor discharge that shocks the user unconscious. They also can fire nanobot "effectors", smart bullets that can change course in midflight and home in on a target.

      • The Castalian Republic was founded after a war to overthrow the Nietzschean Volsung Pride, an offshoot of Kodiak Pride, who had controlled the surface of the planet. The water-breathers bore the brunt of the fighting, but at the end, the Volsung orbital habitat was destroyed along with the 10,000 air-breather slaves on board.

    • QUOTES (6)

      ADD QUOTES
      • Beka: Hey, I read the first officer's job description. 'Playing Devil's Advocate'- it's on page three.
Dylan: Get thee behind me, Satan.

      • Harper: Why? Why? Because... because I didn't like their stupid fish music, that's why.

      • Harper: Not Tyr. Overbearing, self-righteous, vain, vicious, brutal, way too serious, and a little big, but eccentric? No.

      • Harper: Now there's a thought. Do fish people eat fish, or is it like humans eating monkeys or apes? Dylan: The Castalians are humans, genetically engineered to breath water, but still human. Besides, humans do eat monkeys. Humans eat other humans. As a species, we are really quite unpleasant.

      • Tyr: For a man determined to cook history's greatest omelette, you're awfully squeamish about cracking your eggs.

      • Democracy may only be a few steps removed from anarchy, but at least it's not as loud. Crowned in Starlight, Than Hegemon, CY 9843.

      • Williams is a long-time science fiction and fantasy author, who has been nominated for both a Hugo and a Nebula award for City on Fire, his 1997 novel.

    • ALLUSIONS (4)

      ADD ALLUSIONS
      • Sebastian Lee: This is a possible reference to the cellist Sebastian Lee.

      • Chandos: The name Chandos is a reference to the Chandos portrait, one of the most famous of the portraits that may depict William Shakespeare.

      • Title: The title is presumably taken from William Shakespeare's Macbeth, where Macbeth says: "Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?" after murdering the King, Duncan.

      • Chancellor Chandros: ... are you sure your 'superman' is going to show up?

The "superman" in this quote refers to Tyr, a Nietzschean. Nietzscheans are the embodiment of Nietzsche's "perfect" human, referred to as his superman.
