While part 1 was one of the crappiest, stupidest episodes of the series, they decided to pad it out into two episodes. And after the Worldship blasts a gaping hole in Arkology, the fact that the depressurization would probably vent all the air in the cylindrical space station in seconds, and everyone would probably die in a few minutes, the entire thing is handwaved with a "resealing system", as if a system that was probably designed to protect the station from stray asteroids would do anything to save them from a hole at least half a mile in diameter. And it goes downhill from that.

So, say you're the writer of the last episode of a season, wondering if the series will be picked up for another season, and you want to hedge your bets so you can have it both ways, and make an episode which could be the end, but might not be. Do you make something with an ambivalent ending which leaves the viewers questioning, like you did at the ends of season 2 or 3? Well, if you're Bob Engles, the head writer, you think to yourself "Let's kill everyone off! That's an excellent way to end what might be the end of the series! I'll kill off everyone's favorite characters!". But rather than follow like in Season 1 where they all look like they die together, what happens in The Dissonant Interval part 2 ends up being like a horror movie, where each member of the crew is killed off one by one by monsters, though except for Rommie all the deaths happen offscreen. And if you're Bob Engles, you're probably thinking:

What a delightful way to (possibly) end the series! And if the series IS picked up for another season, we can just pull some mystical voodoo **** from Trance to reverse everything like it didn't even happen. Makes perfect sense!

And hey, just to add a bit more death and screw ourselves over more if the series is picked up again, let's have Trance kill herself too, and Beka to look like she's safe, then try to come back Millennium Falcon style to save the day! Fanboys eat up anything that's a homage to Star Wars, after all. But then let's shove their misguided notions in their face, and show Beka dying too for her foolish return! That's the ticket! Now EVERYONE dies!

Wait no, not Dylan Hunt. He's all powerful. He's the star of the show. He's been in every single episode since the series started, he's been elevated to near Godhood in the first part of the episode, and Kevin Sorbo would probably wring my neck. So I'll have him running away and teleporting to safety or something. Add a woman singing for practically the whole episode, and have a weird, nonsensical ending just to freak people out, and this episode will be GOLDEN! That's a wrap, I'm out for lunch. Sherry, turn this wisdom I've written on these napkins into a working script by Monday!
