Season 3 Episode 5

The Lone and Level Sands

Aired Unknown Oct 28, 2002 on Syfy

  • Trivia

    • Slow aging is not no aging. The crew of the Bellerophon apparently travel so fast that time passes very slowly for them but not for those outside. A few months of their time is more than 57 years of real time. However, since they claimed to have spent 20 years of their time, which is almost 3000 years regular time, why are the crew not older? Some of the crew must have started the trip in their teens or younger if they have aged 20 years.

  • Quotes

    • Kemp: Yeah, I was in Boston the night before we set off on this mission – a baseball game at Fenway Park.
Harper: A baseball game, huh? Fenway Park… The last time I was at Fenway Park, I watched the Drago-Kazov crucify a guy in the cheap seats.

    • Metis: It's amazing that you're still sane.
Dylan: Well, that's what the voices inside my head keep telling me.
Metis: If you ask me, I think sanity is overrated.

    • Harper: The Bellerophon, huh? Very nice! Her mission was to gather knowledge of life and civilization to go farther and deeper into space than anyone had ever gone before, and bring that cargo back home to Earth, baby!

    • Dylan: Harper?
      Harper: Almost there, boss.
Maru's Computer: Accessing Ogami missile control.
      Harper: Access faster!
Maru's Computer: Ogami missile control systems online.

    • Captain Metis: (Referring to Rommie) My God, what is she?
Dylan: A warship. She gets a little cranky sometimes.

    • Captain Metis: Captain Hunt. The next time I order you to stay behind, you tell me to go to hell!
      Dylan: Noted.

    • (After Tyr essentially stands there and watches as Rommie beats up three guards)
Rommie: (clearly annoyed) Thanks for your help.
      Tyr: Sure.

    • More than a mere ship of exploration,
      the Bellerophon embodied humanity's last,
great effort to tame the universe
      through our own will alone.

Dr. Paul Museveni, Father of Drago
Museveni, A Farther Shore, CY 8401.

  • Notes

    • Kevin Sorbo and guest star Tony Todd appeared together previously on several episodes of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Tony played the warrior Gladius in the first season episode "Gladiator", and King Gilgamesh in season five's "Faith". In both HTLJ episodes, Tony's character changes from friend to foe, just as his character Captain Metis does on Andromeda.

    • As a testament to the age of the ship, and crew, during the firefight early on in the episode, the crew are shown using projectile weapons, such as pistols and machine guns, instead of the energy weapons used by everyone else.

    • The uniforms worn by the Bellerophon crew are a modified version of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager uniforms. • Allusions

    • Harper says about the Bellerophon that "Her mission was to gather knowledge of life and civilization to go farther and deeper into space than anyone had ever gone before", which mirrors Gene Roddenberry's famous "To seek out new life and new civilization, to boldly go where no man has gone before." opening from another of his series, Star Trek.

    • Title:

The title of this episode comes from the last line of the sonnet Ozymandias by Percy Shelley. In it, the narrator speaks of how "a traveler from an antique land" has told of the statue of a powerful king that now lies in ruin, forgotten in the middle of a desert. The last lines are: "Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare. The lone and level sands stretch far away".

    • Bellerophon:

Bellerophon was the only human ever to ride the winged horse Pegasus. He fell to his death when he tried to fly into the heavens and join the gods on Mount Olympus.

    • Metis:

Metis was the first wife of Zeus. Fearing a prophecy that a son they bore together would usurp his throne, Zeus swallowed her, and their daughter Athena sprang full-grown from his forehead. Known for her cunning and wisdom Metis passed these traits to Zeus.
