The above quote from Sir Walter Scott means that once we tell a lie to deceive someone, we must tell more lies to protect that first lie. Angel's hubby John would have done well to recall this quote when friend and neighbor George came by with two tickets to the boxing match. John's boss was also trying to get tickets, which he was going to share with John, but was content to spend the evening at John and Angel's house to listen on the radio. John, however, was not content to listen on the radio when he could see it live, so he tells his boss that he (John's boss) can't come over because Angel's mother is visiting, which is a lie. When his boss wants to meet her, their neighbor, Mrs. Spiegelman, poses as Angel's mom. Her Yiddish is just enough to fool the boss into thinking that she's speaking French, but not enough to keep John from having to tell more and sillier lies to keep him fooled. Ironically, it is Angel that is the voice of reason, more or less, as she councels John against this deception.

The scenes at the Spiegelmans are funny, as the perpetually hungry Mr. Spiegelman only wants to eat the chicken that the Mrs. is preparing, and makes cute one-liners about his frustrated desire to get his meal. It's too bad we didn't see more of them. If "Angel(1960)" had survived its first season, the Spiegelmans might have gotten enough exposure to warrant a spin-off. Unfortunately, that was not to be.moreless
