My favorite standalone episode has got to be "S2x12: Julia McNamara" in "Nip/Tuck." Technically it's not a complete standalone, since it references injuries she sustained in the previous episode, but it basically explored the Julia character through the free-associative context of a dream sequence and it's just an insanely well-written exploration.

LMAO! When I saw the title I was just thinking before I entered here "I wonder if anyone will just pluck an episode from another show" - not surprising, it was you Not only is that my favourite stand alone episode from Nip/tuck, but my all time favourite episode from the show. It was an hour of sheer brilliance. For Angel. Hmmm. 5x5?

Faith was a little bouncier in "5x5" than Kimber was in "Julia."

But the Troys' mansion in "Julia" was more jaw-dropping than the W&H offices, so I guess it all evens out.

Well 5x5 didn’t have Faith naked in a pool so I’m not sure where my loyalties lie…

Plus there was no death on girl action either…

Oh, CWDP was mostly a standalone. I wanna pick that one.
Although I agree it's a great episode, I don't see CWDP as a stand alone. It brings back a lot of characters from previous episodes and shows the power of the First, so it is really part of the whole S7 storyline as well as pulling in S6 with Tara and Buffy's mom dying. You couldn't just watch that one ep on its own and understand it. And seeing it out of order would definitely ruin the S7 arc.

I haven't seen all of Angel yet, just S1 and S2, but I have seen Smile Time and Why We Fight, both of which are easy to understand even if you haven't see other eps in that season. They don't give too much away (except that Spike is back and I don't want to know why until I get there, I'm just glad he is).

Someone commented that it was too standalone-ish, and it didn't feel important.

Some people consider it too Buffyish and not Angel-like at all.

That puppet looked way more like Angel than Buffy.

Right now my vote is for 2.02 "Catalina Won't Jump For Joy".

Smile Time and Waiting in the Wings are two of my favorite episodes so I'll have to say it's a tie between them.
