    GUISE WILL BE GUISE

    The Good;
So wonderful, finally Wes gets a chance to shine and it's just fabulous. Also love Cordy's Angel impression. And love Rick the guard quietly sloping off when it's revealed that he'd had sex with his employer's daughter.

    Bad;
Gunn never noticed the existance of netherworld? So how come he once traded his soul at a demon casino? (The House Alway's Wins) Surely there's a better way to get Angels help than threatening Cordy? Wouldn't have Wes have noticed that he'd deflowered Virginia during their sex?

    Best line:
    Angel; "Wesley was in virginia?"
    Wes; "That's beside the point"

Jeez, how did they get away with that?
The father who wants to sacrifice his daughter, my god, talk about the lowest of the low! Prophetically she observes he also insures his car. Angel tortures fake Swami with fishing hook and line through his cheek.

    Kinky dinky:
Wes has sex with Virginia although he doesn't take her virginity, that was long gone (what girl ever didn't fool her father in that regard?). Of course if she had sex at 16 that's technically statuatory rape in California. Virginia is lovely, check her out as the 'Blair' witch in Charmed although her outfit in that episode exaggerates her (already respectable) cleavage to the degree it may knock you unconscious. Cordy observes that he 'screwed her over'. The thug refers to Cordy as Angel's piece. Yeska comments that the sacrifice is impure, as Cordy later observes if it was sacrificing male virgins the world would be aethiest in a second. Angel protests he isn't a eunuch and that the curse isn't that clear as later proven by Nina/Darla/The Furies.

    Captain Subtext;
Cordy asks Wes if he has any clothes 'a man would wear'? Of course being Wes he has some excellent suits and Cordy has a very nice business suit. Cordy says she loves Angel. She also refers to Angel as girly. The fake Swami's recipie for Angel's happiness is word perfect for his relationship with Buffy, using her as a Darla substitute (but Buffy made him happy and Darla didn't).

    Questions and observations;
Angel says he rarely goes to church although it's implied that he's a Catholic. A great satire on Hollywood success, anyone with talent and looks has to have magic. A terrific lightweight comedy episode with Wes coming into his own for the first time and getting a girlfriend, just as he should have.

  • Wesley becomes Angel and plays the part of "bodyguard to the stars"

    8.6
    "Great"
Its nice to see Wesley get some character development at last. Although he will end up being probably the most developed character in the entire Buffy verse, it takes a while for this development to get going.

There is one major flaw in this episode and it is the timing of it. The placement between “Dear Boy” and “Darla” seems strange and breaks up the brilliant story arc that has been progressively building. In fact there’s little reason that this episode could not have been placed before “Dear Boy” therefore allowing the Darla arc to continue uninterrupted.

Apart from that this is a very nice episode. Angel is sent off and leaves the rest of the team to manage to office. Both Cordy and Wes play at being Angel but it is Wes who actually steps into this role. The fact that he steps into this role to save Cordelia is highly significant and is perhaps the beginning of Wesley adopting the role of hero and leader, roles he would play for the rest of the season. His romance with Virginia is cute and sweet. Wesley’s romantic life has been put on a bit of a back burner, he’s had very little on screen action since Cordelia in the Buffy season 3 finale, so its nice to see him find someone.

It was also good to see Wesley being the hero, trying to save Virginia and succeeding, although not in a truly conventional sense.

My favourite scene of the episode was the scen at the party when the team arrive and all of them have something to say on the situation, with Cordy and Gunn’s disbelief over Wesley ‘getting some’ and Angel’s indignation over being called a ‘eunuch’ All the actors played their comic roles perfectly and it was a well produced scene.

Overall the episode may have been ill-timed but as a stand alone episode it worked very well.
  • Wes gets to wear the sweeping black coat for a change

    7.9
    "Good"
This episode got a bad rap. I didnt think it was all that bad, but seeing bumbling Wes acting as Angel was kinda "out there." Especially if you have experienced "Dark Wes" later on in Season 3. So Wes acts as Angel and takes a job as bodyguard for Virginia Bryce (at the urging of her Father.)

Angel is away seeing the Tish Magev, or who he *thinks* is the Tish Magev. It turns out Tish was killed by this imposter and Angel soon finds this out. Wes and Virginia share a little loving and soon his cover is blown. Thankfully he (and the gang) save face (and Virginia) in the end and Wes has a new girlfriend.
  • Wesley poses as Angel.

    7.3
    "Good"
In attempt to help Wesley is forced to pose as Angel, which is very obviously not as we all know, and hilarity ensues. Not only does he keep forgetting all the stuff he isn't supposed to be doing, touching crosses and entering homes without invitation, but he also manages to sort of get involved with the very woman he is supposed to be protecting (as Angel). I swear this episode is so hilarious, Alexis has such great skill for on screen comedy and is such a goof at the same time.
  • Wes pretending to be Angel

    8.7
    "Great"
I loved this one!!! Wesley pretending to be Angel was quite amusing. Wes getting some was amusing as well.

I loved how Angel was all breaking into Wolfram and Hart with Gunn and his plan was to walk fast. He really needed to get his mind off of Darla.

I loved how thankful Cordy and Lorne were that Angel didn't have to sing. It was cool that Angel went right off to the Swami guy, it showed that he really wanted to get over the Darla thing on some level.

Cordy doing her brief impersonation of Angel while in his chair was amusing. I loved how she made fun of him and all of his sins and his brooding.

I liked Wes while he was trying to be Angel because he did such a horrible job at being a vampire. He suggested going out during the day, he put his hand on a cross, and walked into a house uninvited. You would have thought that Wes having been a watcher before wouldn't have forgotten all of these things so quickly, it was amazing that they didn't find him out sooner.

I liked Wesley in Angel's coat. It was cool to see Wesley as the hero in this one trying to save the girl.

Really funny episode for the most part.
  • Wesley takes charge while Angel gets fashion advice from a fake swami

    9.0
    "Superb"
I really loved this episode, even though other viewers did not give it such great ratings. It is very underrated. It starts a lot of character development that we see later in the season. The storyline itself is of secondary importance to what we see of the characters' development, specifically Wesley, and the growing role of Gunn in the group. Angel is away seeking advice from a swami, on the Host's suggestion. A nasty thug comes looking for him and threatens Cordelia. Wesley steps up and pretends to be Angel in order to protect Cordy. This was a big step for Wesley, since he still has a lot of fear to overcome. He actually handled himself very well and no one actually realized he was not Angel. Even Virginia was attracted to the man she met, not the Angel of her expectations.

This gives Wesley a lot of confidence that had been lacking while Angel was calling the shots. All of this comes in useful later in the season when Wesley does end up in charge, and especially in Pylea when Wesley's leadership saves everyone. Wesley discovers he can be a man of action, not just the research book guy.

I liked seeing this more confident Wesley, and really enjoyed the interaction between him and Virginia. It was interesting to see how threatened Angel felt when he came back and saw Wesley in his coat. As if the coat had some sort of power, or that Angel might not be in control if he didn't get it back. I also liked that Angel trusted Wesley's plan to save Virginia and that it worked so well. The fact that Virginia continues her relationship with Wesley is proof of the attractiveness of this newer, improved Wesley.

Overall, an excellent episode, with enough action, enough humor and plenty more!
  • Clever title for the episode.

    "Great"
Good episode. Angels is off to a swami to help him with his inner struggles...the swami is a funny guy, I kind of liked him...at first. While Angel is away, Wesley and Cordelia have to deal with a client who insists on Angel to protect his daughter.

Lots of disguises going on...the swami is not the swami, Wesley is not Angel (although he attempts to impersonate him which is a hoot), the client has hidden intentions for his daughter, even the client's virginal daughter has a bit of a surprise for her father in the end.

Good for Wesley...he finally gets the girl! Fun episode with a clever title.
  • Wes Bigelo, Vampire Gigelo

    "Fair"
Guise Will Be Guise-Angel travels to a mystical swami to help him understand his haunting dreams and to find his path again, but while he is away Wesley assumes Angel's identity to try to save a young girl and rather enjoys playing the role of a vampire with a soul. An episode that only has some funny moments but not a great plot. I have to say it is funny watching Wesley playing Angel and going undercover. His random running into walls, and overracting to mirrors are placed well, but does get overused a bit. The guest stars are decent, though Brigid Brannagh as Virgina Bryce is mediorce at best. It's weird that she sleeps with Wesley so quick, but I guess she was into the whole brooding vampire thing. The swami subplot with Angel seemed pointless and the whole daughter sacrifice twist is hardly interesting. Though the revealtion of Virgina not being a virgin brings some hilarious lines:

Cordelia: "One day playing a vampire and he gets some."

Gunn: "I could have told you she wasn't no virgin."

    Angel: "I am not eunuch!"

But all and all, this is pretty much a filler episode that does nothing to advance the plot at all.
  • Wesley pretends to be Angel and meets a girl.

    9.2
    "Superb"
Yes, this episode is a bit silly, but Wesley in this episode is reminiscent of his days on Buffy where he was a bumbling fool. He plays Angel great and he gets the girl in this one. Virginia is nice compliment to him and the scene where her father tries to sacrifice her is great and the revelation at the end of her not being a virgin is classic and hilarious. The swami (who ends up being fake) offers some good advice to Angel who probably should of noticed earlier that something was up. All in all a good episode that transitions well into the rest of the season.
  • With Angel away, Wesley assumes his identity.

    9.5
    "Superb"
When a powerful man, who deals in magic, needs protection for his daughter, he looks no further than Angel investigations. With Angel out of town, Wesley assumes his identity and plays body guard to the daughter...hilarity ensues.

From start to finish Wesley really shines in this episode. It's funny to think that Wesley used to be a stuck up watcher while watching this episode. He goes from watcher, to sidekick, to impostor, to "Bodyguard to the stars!".

Angel is also pretty funny in this episode too; when he is trying to justify his fashion choices to the fake swami.

Though Wesley is the standout (considering the episode is all about him!).

No Darla in this episode, which makes me happy.
  • Wesley gets some.

    8.9
    "Great"
Guise Will Be Guise is a fun, silly episode that whilst being very good, felt a bit out of place. The story was OK (if slightly confusing), the dialogue is hilarious and Alexis Denisof was brilliant and hilarious.

The entire Virginia kidnap plot story was actually quite difficult to follow. First of all, Wesley admits he's not Angel at the very start to Bryce's bodyguard, yet when he turns up as Angel at Bryce's, the bodyguard doesn't recognize him! Then, Angel's the swami and the swami phones Bryce's enemy and tells him it's not Angel at Bryce's and there was a bit too many people and it got confusing. The sacrifice thing was quite interesting, if sort of unoriginal. The plot wasn't standout.

However the dialogue was absolutely spot on. Wesley had some hilarious one-liners like

    Angel: You were in Virginia?

    Wesley: That's beside the point.

    Wesley: That's... nummy.

It truly was a laugh-fest watching Wesley trying to be Angel and even though he's completely unconvinving, no-one suspects. Virginia is a good love interest for Wesley- she's fun. The demon Yeska at the end looked comical though and made me laugh. I think it was intentional as that thing was striking fear in no-one's heart.

Alexis Denisof truly is excellent when it comes to comedy. His portrayal of Wesley is brilliant and he makes him a delight to watch. The Angel/Swami scenes went on a bit though and they were completely poinless with the swami making ridiculous points and Angel going "Hmm". I get it was necessary to the plot but less of it would have been better, as what the swami says is basically rubbish as he's fake!

I don't have a lot to say on Guise Will Be Guise. It was funny and entertaining and a joy to watch at points, but there was no real character development or furtherting of the main plot, leaving it feel like it should have been earlier in the season, but it's definitely worth a watch.
  • While Angel is away Wesley impersonates him.

    9.5
    "Superb"
I thought this episode was great. Although I don't think it's because of the plot. In all honesty Alexis (Wesley) acting on this episode was just fantastic in my opinion. He helped make this a real fun and funny episode. Coming from a person who really doesn't care much for nerdy Wesley. I much prefer the character when he's darker. Although I'll admit he has some good times when he's nerdy, this episode being one of them. I really don't care too much for season two. Since it's mostly about Darla, who personally I never really cared for. Like Drusilla a lot just not Darla. So glad they had this episode for this season, makes it more easier to endure at times.

  • Guise Will Be Guise

    "Superb"
Guise Will Be Guise was a really good episode of Angel. I really enjoyed watching this episode because Angel learns more about himself, even if through a guy pretending to be a Swami. I thought the story of the episode was great because it sent the characters in different directions and brought them back together again in the end. This episode introduces us to Virginia Bryce, who I look forward to seeing again. This episode had a good mix of action, drama, passion, humor, and character development. It was interesting to hear the fake Swami talking about Angel, how he is reflected in the people around him, their perception of him. Meanwhile Wesley was pretending to be Angel, which showed another side to Wesley and his perception of Angel. I can't wait to see what happens next!!!!!

season 2 was a very good season but the episodes that were not about darla were a set back and didn't really continue the season like this one. it was funny to se wesley as a more tough guy because he was really stupid at first but that did not make the episode very good and the episode was not funny at all!

but it was ok and cordelia acting like angel was hilarious
  • Overall, this episode was a near-perfect character study for Wesley, delving into his strengths without ignoring some of his weaknesses. Wesley gets to be the hero in this episode; the foundation is laid for his role later in the season and series.

    7.0
    "Good"
After the darkness of the previous episode, it’s fitting that this episode slips back into the light. At least, it has a somewhat more comic tone, as it focuses on Wesley. The second season is not just about Angel’s descent into darkness, of course; it’s about Wesley maturity into a leader. A lot of that is a matter of confidence, and when push comes to shove, Wesley steps up to the challenge. It’s more about his realization that the same confidence applies to every aspect of his life, even if he has some issues with physical dexterity outside of combat!

For fans of the character, the opening sequence is a bit of a step backward. Wesley hasn’t been that incompetent for a long time. This is classic Jane Espenson, though, cutting to the worst qualities of the character so that the best qualities shine through even more. For Wesley, that’s the aforementioned lack of physical dexterity and his apparent lack of guile. But he’s hardly the only one in the crosshairs.

After his run of bad judgment in the previous episode, Angel’s emotional and psychological issues are on the table. Unlike some shows, where such events would be set aside and the psychological effects would seldom be mentioned, that aspect of the story is front and center in “Angel”. Angel is looking for spiritual guidance, and that takes up a significant part of the story. It’s one of the benefits of a solid Joss Whedon series.

In fact, messing with convention in the Buffyverse has become such a norm by this point that the appearance of the supposed T’ish Magev doesn’t raise an alarm. It’s quite possible to believe that this is the real deal, because who was expecting a green, horned oracle with a penchant for disco tunes? Similarly, a burly tough guy as a spiritual counselor fits within the sense of irony.

Despite the fact that the real T’ish Magev is dead, Angel still gets some insight into his psychological issues. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Angel is strongly influenced by those around him, especially when it comes to expectations. Angel has had a long time to develop a special kind of self-loathing, and when mixed with his innate darkness, that can translate into a death wish and a desire to be someone other than himself. All in all, there’s a damned good reason why Angel is the archetypical tragically flawed hero.

This pertains directly to Wesley’s attempt to play Angel. It works remarkably well, despite the obvious differences between the two men, and part of that is the fact that Angel is presenting a certain brand of personality when in the field. Wesley manages to step into that role, drawing upon his own heroic aspects, and he is relatively convincing as a result. When he deals with Virginia, for instance, he acts more like himself, with the competent heroism fully intact.

Angel’s talk with the supposed T’ish Magev about the curse is another subtle way of letting the audience know that it’s not just about sex. Just as the previous episode established that Darla never really made Angel happy, even when he was Angelus, this episode brings up the delicate question of physical sexual bliss and the psychological state of perfect happiness.

At the same time, if Angel is a little unsure about the exact nature of the curse, the rest of the world seems to be even less informed. They know that he’s cursed with a soul and that sex is something of a problem, but the details are rather fuzzy and it’s all a matter of hearsay. (“I’m not a eunuch!”) Otherwise, Virginia would never have made an overture towards Wesley, thinking he was Angel and cursed. Not that Wesley was going to correct her interpretations (and really, who could blame him, when he had Brigid Brannagh ready and willing?)

When Wesley’s ruse is exposed, it might have been an easy way to restore Angel as the hero of the episode and set Wesley back into his place. Instead, Wesley take command of the situation. In a nice touch, Angel becomes the one with the historical information, arming Wesley with the key to the plot to kill Virginia. In that moment, Wesley stops pretending to be the hero and simply is the hero.

Because it would also be too conventional for Wesley to battle the demon and win through courage and skill (talk about instant character development!), the threat to Virginia is resolved in a far more clever fashion. How Magnum Bryce could imagine that his incredibly hot daughter was still a virgin is a bit of an obvious question, but given his control over her world, it’s not too hard to believe.

This is a big step for Wesley, because he came to recognize more of his strengths and what he could accomplish by simply taking action and trusting in his own instincts. This has been shown before, but this is the first time that it shines through to this extent. It’s an important building block for his character’s development over the course of the season.
  • 'Oh, I can't do anything fun tonight. I have to count my past sins, then alphabetize them. Oh, by the way, I'm thinking of snapping on Friday.'

    8.7
    "Great"
‘Guise Will Be Guise’ is an interesting episode about Wesley, but it tries to hard being funny and fails. This episode is my least favourite so far, although it still manages to develop his characters in some ways.

The episode begins with Wes being clumsy as always, he keeps tripping over stuff. When a guy comes to search for Angel he tells him Angel is not around but offers himself for help but the guy doesn’t look impressed by him. Then Cordy comes to Wes and she needs his help, they are going as lawyers to stop Angel from doing something crazy, it was a hoot to see Cordy as a lawyer.

Angel doesn’t know what to do anymore so he goes for help to Lorne who tells him to go to a swami. Meanwhile Wesley and Cordy enjoy the time without Angel, but then those men come back again and now the want Angel, so Wesley puts on Angel’s coat and says that he is Angel and leaves with the men. He has to look after a girl named Virginia who is in danger, especially now that her dad is going to be 50 years. It was hilarious to see Wes drink blood and slowly grow as he becomes more confident and protects Virginia. She is trapped in that house and isn’t able to live the life she wants, slowly she and Wesley begin to fall inlove and then they have sex. Meanwhile Angel goes to the swami who talks to him and tells him that he reflects himself into the people that see him. They talk about Darla and about letting his inner demon out. But the swami isn’t a real swami, he was there to keep Angel from Virginia but there is already someone called Angel protecting her. Virginia’s dad comes to know it and they kick Wes out with Coryd who came to visit him, Virginia is devastated because she thought she had finally made a fried.

When Gunn goes to look up Angel he gets attacked by a swami and Angel catches him and teaches him a lesson. Meanwhile Virginia is going to be sacrificed, her dad is going to be more powerful if he sacrifices his virgin daughter to a goddess but Virginia isn’t a virgin anymore so the goddess doesn’t accept the sacrifice. Wesley comes to rescue her and she hits her father and never wanting to see him again.

Both Wesley and Virginia made a nice match and developed shortly, also Angel being called an eunuch falls under hilarious. But the episode seemed very slow and unnecessary at times, I would have preferred if they continued the Darla arc instead of this episode. All in all, it’s a very decent episode with finally Wesley getting some.
  • A funny, exciting emotional Wesley centred episode!

Ok anyone else getting a 'The Zeppo' vibe from this episode?! Anyways this was a very good episode that gave Wesley a chance to shine and show what a great addition to the group he really is and how much he has grwon since season 3 of Buffy. Angel's reaction to seeing Wesley wearing his coat was hilarious! And all the comments after that!! I didn't really think there was a point to Angel travelling to see that guy but I suppose it did have it's impact on the Wesley story for this episode! But overall a good episode of Angel.
  • Works as a clever farce, but runs out of steam by the end.

This episode is an unfortunate example of what happens when something is overwritten. The scenes with Wes trying to be Angel are simply hilarious, especially when he just nonchalantly strolls into the mansion without being invited in, only to realize his mistake and jerking back outside. The scenes with the fake swami are strange and muddled. What was his purpose for keeping Angel there? To stop him from helping the man's daughter? If so, why did they let Wesley act as Angel? Overall, it's a confusing but funny episode wrapped around two masterpieces. It's still important to Wesley's character and should not be missed, even if he is trying to be someone else.
  • Wesley as Angel reveals that Wesley's actor can indeed act, and is hysterical.

I also love the cuts back and forth between Angel and Wesley. This was a well written, well executed episode of Angel. It's hard to believe it's only a season 2 episode since Angel wasn't usually this smart until later.

But is it just me or did Cordelia's hair get cut in the middle of the scene?
