    Questions and observations;
The shortest teaser ever, Angel basically storms off the roof lashing out at everything on the way down. Wes and Lilah break up and never get back together. Lilah actually shows some pity for Gavin describing him as 'Poor bastard'. Lorne and Gunn's idea that maybe Connor isn't linked to the beast and it's just the mystical hotspot behind Caritas is actually pretty sound, rare that anyone tries to 'Scully' Angel (well maybe Sheryl Crow?). Are the zombies actually a satire of corporate life? Angel says he has a photographic memory as we suspected. Why doesn't Lilah try to put a round in the Beast's eye? Love Lorne's little look at his drink when the AI appear back in the Hyperion foyer.

Habeas Corpses was a perfect episode of Angel and I really enjoyed watching this episode. There was a lot of character development as Cordelia had to be honest with Conner while Wesley had to be honest with Lilah. Meanwhile the Beast has begain to wipe out all the evil competition and only Lilah has survived the slaughter at Wolfram and Hart, other than Conner. Angel and the Gang work their way into the lawfirm to find Conner, and they end up finding the dead lawyers have come back as zombies. They escape to the White Room only to find the little girl, the manifestation of Ancient Evil, is being sucked dry of her power by the Beast. She has enough juice however to send the gang to the Hotel safely. I thought this was an interesting turn of events, and I certainly can't wait to watch the next episode!!!!!!!

    "Superb"
Habeas Corpses is an outstanding episode and a wonderful follow up to Apocalypse Nowish. It deals with the aftermath of the Rain of Fire and Angel and how he feels about Cordelia sleeping with Connor.

The starting scene is a short scene but important; we rarely see Angel get so angry to smash things up. I think the only time we've ever seen this before is in "The Trial" when he learnt Darla was going to die. This rage speaks volumes about how he feels. It shows of his deep love for Cordelia and his feelings of betrayal from Connor. He can't actually stop them seeing each other; Connor is an adult and Cordelia isn't actually with him, so he feels trapped at having to watch the woman he loves bone his son. Connor/Cordelia is just an awful scene for even the audience as it is just wrong. On first viewing, it is very easy to hate Cordelia this season as she just treats Angel so poorly but even you know it isn't really her, there are still feelings of resentment towards her.

Wolfram and Hart took centre stage here and for the first time ever it seems they've lost- The Beast has demolished them and every employee except Lilah is dead. Even though W&H are the bad guys, it's quite hard to watch The Beast brutally murder everyone and the pile of bodies in the corridor is even more shocking. I'm glad Lilah escaped as Lilah's so awesome. However, while I don't like Gavin, it was a big shock when he was murdered. It gives the feeling no one is safe from this thing and Gavin was a suitable character to use- he's important but not too important. Killing Lilah here wouldn't have been right- she's a major character and her death needs more significance. The Beast is an incredible presence and he's probably the most intimidating demon ever- his costume alone is frightening. However I can still remember before I knew he was working on Cordelia's orders wondering why he's doing all this- he doesn't look remotely intelligent and basically just kill-crush-destroy. The clue at the end "The answer is among you" from the little girl is one in a long line of clues that direct your answer to Cordy but the fact that Cordy would do this is unbelievable and the Angelus diversion is enough to divert you from this. When you know what to look for however, it's not blatantly obvious but you observe the little things more and it all adds up. Cordevila is one hell of a mastermind.

Habeas Corpses is a brutal, often scary episode but it's essential to watch as it is very significant to the arc, which at this stage, is Angel at it's best.
  • Wolfram and Hart Under Siege

Habeas Corpses-Angel learns that there may be a connection between the Beast and Connor, only to discover that Connor is trapped inside the Wolfram & Hart offices, where the Beast is on a bloody rampage.

After the apocaplyptic events of last episode, not to mention Angel being left watching Cordy and his own son having sex, this episode continues the rampage of L.A.'s newest big threat. The Beast continues to be an impressive villain as his attack on Wolfram and Hart is a complete slaughter fest and he literally lives no one alive, well except Lilah who is always a surviver! Just the sight of all those dead bodies in Wolfram and Hart with the gloomy atmosphere after the slaughter is very creepy and disturbing. You really worry for Connor who is trapped inside with the Beast, and the rest of the Fang Gang when they go in to save him. The zombie attack of all the dead lawyers was pretty effective and was reminiscent of movies like Resident Evil and Dawn of the Dead. This episode also has shocking scenes like the Beast draining of "evil red riding hood" (A hilarious by Gunn quote!) to which an errie black energy comes out of her. But for some reason, the Beast looked a little ridiculous in the infinite white room, I guess only dark atmospheres sues him better. My only problem with the episode was Angel anger toward Cordelia abotu sleeping with Connor. The jealuos not boyfriend routine just got irritating and I was annoyed how he pushed Cordelia to the side the whole episode because of it. All and All, a superb episode with violent scenes, nice action sequences and horror-movie like atmosphere.

Well, the morning after the rain of fire starts out pretty mellow. Cordy wakes up next to Connor and *almost* looks remorseful for what she has done. When he wakes up and tries to get cuddly, she shuts him down. Meanwhile at the hotel the gang re-unites, all but Angel. Fred is happy to see Gunn, but you can tell there are major undercurrents there. Angel shows up and retreats to his room. The gang thinks it is because he was so beat up, they have no idea of the real reason. Wes goes home and Lilah shows up to make sure he survived alright and he ends up telling her it is over between them. She doesnt take this well, but leaves just the same. Soon enough the beast makes himself known again and attacks W&H full on. He is killing everything in sight and taking no prisoners. Wes gets in and helps Lilah escape, Gavin isnt so lucky and gets his neck broken by the beast. Also...Connor is trapped inside W&H. Wes parts ways with Lilah in the sewer and goes to find Angel and Co. and advise them of the situation. Cordy is there, but Angel wont talk to her. She tries to follow along with the gang to W&H to help save Connor but Angel benches her and she has to stay behind with Lorne. Angel and the gang get into W&H and soon find out that these lawyers dont die, they become zombies. The gang scrambles for a way out when Angel remembers the White Room. The gang makes it to the White Room in time to see the beast sucking the life force out of the little evil girl there. She has one bit of mojo left so she sends the gang back to the hotel. Cordy comes to Angels office to congratulate him on getting Connor out and he promptly tells her to take her new boyfriend and get out. Double OUCH.

after the amazing apocalypse the beast was born and now hes after the nice people at wolfram and hart. the episode was spectacular with all those zombies wanting to kill the gang. this is the goriest episode of angel by far and it's brilliant!

angel also discovers that his son slept with his woman so now he does not want either of them. the sad about this episode is that lilah leaves and never comes back until she gets killed but at least she did not die in this episode
  • Ofcourse this was a classic. it had zombies. This is one of the best episodes of the show with a great script and filled with awesome scenes. It was sad that Wes dumped Lilah but that even made her better than she already was. It could've hardly been bett

    Black Out

    ----------

    Best episode quotes:

Fred: Oh! I thought you were dead. I got back here, and it was empty and I panicked and the radio and the fires?

Gunn: I know, baby. I know. Me too. It was like the end of the world out there, and all I wanted was you.

Fred: You're safe now, all of you.

    Wesley: Yes, all safe.

Fred: What about Angel? Where's Angel?

Gunn: We got separated. I'm sure he'll be here soon. What about you? You OK?

Fred: I'm fine. I just needed some air. I didn't know I'd be gone so long. Looks like there's some other things I didn't know either.

Gunn: Yeah. Plenty of time for updates later. Right now we need to regroup, think about getting back out there and mixing it up with that demony thing.

Wesley: That's not what Angel would do.

Gunn: Thanks for your opinion, and I don't remember asking.

    Fred: Uh, what demony thing?

Lorne: Oh, I believe he's referring to the big bad, possibly invincible, demony thing that nearly killed us all before he ring-mastered tonight's Cirque du Flambe.

Fred: Is that the pain and suffering and despair thing you saw when you read Cordelia?

Lorne: 'Fraid so, peanut. And if there was ever truth in advertising...

Fred: Charles, if he's really that big and bad, maybe we should wait for Angel. I- I mean, if he couldn't stop him?

Gunn: So we just wait 'cause we don't know what Angel would or wouldn't do?

    Angel: Would I do what?

    Fred: Angel, you're hurt.

Angel: I'll be? Let's talk about it in the morning.

Fred: What about Cordelia and Connor? Has anyone checked in on 'em? Angel?

    Angel: They're fine.

Lorne: You saw them? The man looks like he was hit by a tank.

Gunn: I don't remember seeing him that down after a fight.

Wesley: Can't blame him. No one likes to lose, whatever the circumstance.

Connor: Mornin'. Did the world end?

    Cordelia: Not exactly.

    Connor: That's a good thing.

    Cordelia: Don't do that.

    Connor: Do what?

Cordelia: That. The look. The happy puppy look. Makes it harder.

    Connor: Makes what harder?

Cordelia: You're very special, Connor. Last night will always be special, and something we both needed, but it happened because of unusual circumstances. You understand what I'm saying?

Connor: Yeah, that it was special.

Cordelia: That it can't happen again.

    Connor: B? Why?

Cordelia: You're Angel's son. It rained fire last night? never a good sign. And a giant demony beast crawled out from the earth where you were born.

Connor: You think it's my fault?

Cordelia: No. I told you last night I didn't. I said?

Connor: Yeah, you said a lot of things last night. You said it didn't matter anymore, that we were real?

    Cordelia: And I meant them.

Connor: Yeah, then. Today it's all my fault. You know, the fire demon? all of it!

Cordelia: Don't be? Look, all I said was?

Connor: That I can't be with you.

Lilah: OK. I was just checking.

    Wesley: I'm alive.

Lilah: Not by much from the looks of it. I left you a couple hundred messages last night. Don't feel obligated to return any of them.

    Wesley: Then you're all right.

Lilah: Fine. Slept at Wolfram and Hart. FYI, safest place to be in case of an apocalypse. You on the other hand? Hmm. I bet I could make you feel better. You know, it's weird. Rain of fire, whole city burning?why do I feel a chill?

Wesley: I can't do this anymore.

Lilah: Yeah, yeah, I've heard that a million times, cowboy. We both know how this song ends. You, me, broken furniture...

    Wesley: It's over, Lilah.

    Lilah: You're serious.

Wesley: After what I saw last night, I believe a day of reckoning has arrived.

Lilah: And you just reckon you'll toss in with the good guys?

    Wesley: I'm choosing a side.

Lilah: And the girl of your dreams just happens to be on it. Hmm. What are the odds?

Wesley: This isn't about Fred. Or anyone else, for that matter. It's about right and wrong.

Lilah: And you have such a clear grip on those concepts.

    Wesley: I've made mistakes.

Lilah: You're making a big one now. I could wear the glasses again.

Wesley: Don't embarrass yourself. There is a line, Lilah. Black and white, good and evil.

Lilah: Funny thing about black and white? you mix it together and you get gray. And it doesn't matter how much white you try and put back in, you're never gonna get anything but gray. And I don't see your Texas-gal-pal wearing that color. Come to think of it, she prefers black.

Cordelia: You have a minute? I was hoping we could...talk. About, uh, well, about Connor.

    Angel: I already know.

Cordelia: You do? Really. Well then you're handling it a lot better than me.

Angel: Can we not do this right now?

Cordelia: Listen up, daddy dearest. The fact that this hell beast you're all looking for crawled up out of the ground in the exact spot where your son was born seems precisely what we should be talking about right now.

    Angel: Same spot? Really?

Cordelia: You said you already knew.

Angel: Of course I knew. Doesn't mean anything. Could just be a, you know?

    Cordelia: Coincidence.

    Angel: Strange things happen.

Cordelia: Like a vampire giving birth? Oh wait, that thing happened in the exact same spot too.

Angel: What are you? You think Connor's connected to this evil thing?

Cordelia: Me? God, no. He's a sweetie pie.

Angel: Then why're you telling me?

Cordelia: Because your son stormed out this morning, and he really does believe it.

Lilah: Listen, Frank, I don't care if you have to lojack the damn thing?

    Gavin: Sugar?

Lilah: Find that beast, or I swear to God, I will?

    Gavin: Boil you alive.

Lilah: Shut up! Boil you alive. How hard can it be to find a giant horned thing. Or a decent cup of coffee. Why are you still here?

Gavin: Intel confirms that it was the creature that triggered the pyrotechnics last night. They're just not sure why he did it.

Lilah: I'll tell you why. Because he can. It's the 800 pound gorilla?it can do whatever the hell it wants. I get that. But other than charbroiling everything in sight, I don't think it has an agenda. And that makes our job tricky.

    Gavin: What job?

Lilah: The senior partners want us to try and cut a deal with it.

    Gavin: You can't be serious.

Lilah: Why? It wants the same things we do. An apocalypse, end of the world, yadda yadda yadda. Partners feel it might speed things along and save a few bucks.

Gavin: But what if it's not interested?

Lilah: I'll change it's mind. I'm not losing this one.

    Connor: I have questions.

Lilah: Connor. Huh. If the last few hours haven't brought enough surprises. You really threw us for a loop here, kiddo, sneaking in the building. You really are like your old man, aren't you?

Connor: It's time to find out.

Lilah: Are you saying what I think you're saying?

Connor: I want to know why I'm here, what I am.

Lilah: Timeless question, and one we're more than happy to help answer. We have an in-house lab. We'll do a few easy work-ups: psychological, physiological, neurological. And focus on exactly who or what you are. And we'll slice you open and start poking around.

Connor: I have a different idea.

Lilah: I'm open to any suggestions.

Connor: That demon you're seeking, I think I'm connected to it. I wanna find out how.

Lilah: Sure, no problem. Gavin, why don't you get our young friend a copy of your report, and we'll sit down and have a nice, non-violent conversation.

Connor: It's here. It's here. The beast.

Lilah: It's probably just an after-shock. They sometimes make the power go out. Try a walkie.

Gavin: This is Gavin Park to the front desk. Over. Come in front desk.

Guard: Ah, this is the front desk Mr. Park, we're kinda? Oh, no! Oh, my God!

Lilah: Tell him to stop whining and make a report.

Guard: Send backup! Oh, God! Somebody please? No!

    Connor: Told you.

Lilah: Go downstairs, and check it out. Gavin, ask yourself this question: what are you more afraid of, a giant murderous demon or me?

    Gavin: Be right back.

Lilah: Have any idea what this thing wants?

    Connor: Everybody dead.

Lilah: What exactly is this thing?

Connor: I don't know, but I think it's following me around.

Lilah: And you're gonna kill it?

    Connor: Gonna try.

Lilah: And we're heading towards it right now… Best of luck.

Lilah: Uh, oh, I don't understand.

    Wesley: Stay with me, Lilah.

    Lilah: Why are you here?

Wesley: I have a man on the inside. What's that?

Lilah: Oh, it's the fat lady singing.

    Wesley: Lilah.

Lilah: The building automatically shuts down under full scale attack.

Wesley: When you say "shuts down..."

Lilah: Windows, doors, air vents. Nobody gets in or out. Oh...

Wesley: Stay with me. Come on, Lilah, there must be a way out for someone like you. Think. A back door, something.

Lilah: Around the corner, a supply closet. Why are you stopping for? You gotta be kidding me. Will it kill him?

Wesley: No, it might distract him for a moment.

    Lilah: Gavin. Poor bastard.

    Wesley: Lilah?

Lilah: It's in here. Come on, where is it?

Wesley: Are you sure this is the right closet?

Lilah: Yes. Third floor and lobby. OK, here it is. Now what?

Wesley: Now you disappear. You get patched up and leave town

    Lilah: Turn tail and run?

Wesley: That thing won't quit 'til everyone at Wolfram and Hart is dead. Go underground, change your name. Don't make its job easy.

Lilah: Wesley... Connor's trapped up inside.

    Wesley: What?

Lilah: I don't know if he's alive. He's in the third floor conference room. Not that there's a way back in, I just thought you should know.

Cordelia: It's gonna be fine, you know. Connor's a champion, like you. He's special.

Angel: Right. Like me. Special. Somebody should stay here and mind the store.

Lorne: Me! Me me me. Sargeant Stay-At-Home, volunteering for duty, sir.

    Angel: Gunn, Let's go.

Gunn: Angel, uh, assuming we can even get inside the evil empire, same big beastie's in there who spanked our asses six ways to Sunday. What's gonna be different this time?

Angel: What's different is we're not going for the monster, we're going for Connor.

Gunn: So, you phoned ahead so the big bad understand that?

Angel: Look, I don't know the answers. Don't even know most of the questions. But what I do know is that I have to go into Wolfram and Hart and find my son. Now as far as us versus the big bad's concerned, there's only one smart way to play it: You see it, you run like hell.

Cordelia: Works for me. Excuse me.

    Angel: Stay here with Lorne.

    Cordelia: Uh-uh. Connor's in danger, and I?

Angel: Cordelia, I don't want you there. It's too dangerous. Way too dangerous. I can't risk it. Fred, get a move on.

Gunn: I don't get it. Wolfram and Hart is evil, the big bad is evil... why go all Terminator on your own team?

Angel: Maybe all it wants... is to eliminate the competition.

Fred: Doesn't give us much to look forward to, does it?

Angel: Connor. Jesus. Thank God you're alive.

Connor: Hey, how'd you know where to find me?

Connor: Wait, first I have to kill that thing. This is my fault.

Angel: We can't kill it, and no it's not. We've thrown everything we can at it?it's not enough. We need to go. Gavin? how did??

    Connor: He looks dead.

Angel: He is dead. Technically, 's undead. It's a zombie.

    Connor: What's a zombie?

    Angel: It's an undead thing.

    Connor: Like you?

Angel: No, zombies are slow-moving, dimwitted things that crave human flesh.

    Connor: Like you.

Angel: No! It's different. Trust me.

Gunn: What the hell was that?

    Wesley: Zombies.

Gunn: Yeah, thanks for the newsflash, Captain Obvious. It's locked.

    Fred: Charles, you're bleeding.

Gunn: Zombie broad tried to snack on me.

    Wesley: She bit you?

Gunn: You worried I'm gonna turn into one of those mindless meatbags?

Wesley: No, I don't think it works that way here.

Gunn: Good to know, but if it is, don't let me be one for long.

Wesley: You'll do the same for me?

    Gunn: Oh yeah.

Angel: Home. She sent us. Oh.

    Connor: Dad?

    Cordelia: You're safe.

    Fred: Does it hurt?

    Gunn: It's OK.

Lorne: Well, hail the conquering heroes, and how the hell did you just do that?

Fred: That was awful what it did to that little girl.

Lorne: Oh, i-it killed a girl?

Wesley: Not really a girl. Something ancient and evil dressed like a girl.

Gunn: So, what's it say about the Big Bad Wolf if he can just stride right in and suck the energy out of Evil Red Riding Hood?

Wesley: I don't know, other than it's gonna take a force far smarter and stronger than us to defeat it.

Lorne: Oh, like there's a lot of that just lying around.

    Cordelia: Hey. I was...really worried.

    Angel: I bet.

Cordelia: The folks out there are feeling pretty discouraged.

    Angel: Yep.

Cordelia: I'm just glad that everyone's safe and together again.

Angel: Me too. Now, take your new boyfriend, and get the hell out of here.

    Cordelia: Oh, God!

Zombies. Everybody loves zombies, right? With all their gnawing and their tearing. This is an episode of epic proportions, which kicks up the pace even higher than the previous episode. The Beast was one of the most memorable big bads in the Buffyverse and his apocalyptic series of episodes were awesome.

Habeas Corpses (great title) has The Beast breaking into Wolfram & Hart and slaughtering all the lawyers. Connor is trapped inside and Angel Investigations need to save him. But, they are unaware of the W&H lockdown procedure which reanimates the dead...

The scenes set in Wolfram & Hart are brilliantly atmospheric and the shots of all the lawyers desperately fleeing from The Beast are excellently filmed. Stephanie Romanov is particularly awesome in this episode and I loved the scene in which she was shooting The Beast repeatedly, to no avail.

The zombies are excellent but it's a shame they weren't featured more and didn't really get to do much except growl and break through some doors. The make-up effects were good, however, and the shot of The Beast holding the severed head was jaw-dropping.

Habeas Corpses is a stand-out episode of season four and features a hell of a lot of cool scenes.

Everyone's sore and aching from their encounter with the Beast (who became //more// frightening, I think, when we weren't seeing him very much). And Cordy and Connor are sore and aching for other reasons. But at least all sentiment dried up and blew away when Cordy blew him off with the, "It's not you, it's me ... oh, who am I kidding, it's totally you" speech.

And now we have a physical presence for Jasmine.

I think it's safe at this point to call Jasmine a user.

She uses Cordy to sneak into this plane of existence, having already used Skip to get her in a place where that would be possible. She uses Cordy to summon the Beast -- they don't seem too surprised to see one another when they first meet without an audience. She uses the Beast to bring about the big, big chaos. And then once that's done, she discards him and then when Angelus ...

um ... precisely what did Jasmine need Angelus for, again?

... well, anyway, when she's done with him, she's ready to discard him as well.

So, if Cordy's character arc seemed a little loopy before, she is about to become //seriously// Wacked-Out Pregnant Lady.

The big reveal in this ep seems to be that Cordy knows that Angel knows that Cordy slept with Connor. That has an impact, yes, but since we already saw that (and thank you, Joss -- //ew//) a little boring.

So let's run around with some zombie fun!

    Connor: "What's a zombie?"

Angel: "An undead, slow-moving, dim-witted thing with a craving for human flesh."

Connor: "So it's like you then."

Oh, that boy does get some joyful lines once in a while.

I loved the escape hatch through the supply closet. And the Beast attacking Lilah (although I have no idea what the significance of that thumb to the gut was -- maybe he planned to finish the job later.) And I loved how Wes told her it was over, and her commentary on good and evil, black and white.

How Wes can never be good enough for Fred.

Black, white and shades of gray. Joss ... doesn't exactly get the Christian concept of redemption, but he's not a Christian so I wouldn't expect him to.

I ... don't know how Gunn escaped from the horde (I loved him and Wes assuring each other they'd kill the zombie versions of themselves). And I don't know why the Beast made zombies, or, since Cordy's the Beastmaster (as we discover soon enough), why //Jasmine// wanted for there to be zombies. And I don't understand why I sleep all day and I start to complain when there's no rain.

Whoops, sorry -- got away from myself there for a moment.

Whyever she wants them, zombies there are.

And while Angel still seems to care whether a situation is too dangerous for Cordy, he's not that interested in protecting Fred. I'd love to know what's up with that, but I'm more interested in why Lorne didn't shoot Lilah when he saw her.

We're ... quite the forgiving bunch in CYNTHIA!

Incidentally, with CYNTHIA! as screwed up as it is, should it be called something else through the end of S4?

    HYACINT! perhaps?

    Just a suggestion.

P.S. -- How cool was the scene in the White Room? That was like some other show entirely, very Star Trek or Stargate or Star Search -- well, something high-tech and otherworldly, anyway.

I remember the collection of the totems as being far more unbelieveable, but the Beast attacking the little girl was disturbing in a well done sort of way.

And "The Answer Is Among You."

How annoying and cryptic can you get?

Especially since Jazzy Cordy isn't even //there//. ;)
