  • Weak ep rescued by the finale

    Hero
    The Good;
    Actually I rated this ep pretty weak until the last 5 minutes when it then became spectacular. Cordy's advertisement idea and the one she films with Doyle are hilarious but ultimately incredibly poignant. Good scene too when the kid tells Doyle his Halloween story.
    The Bad;
    I didn't really dig the demons in peril storyline and I thought the Naiz allegory with The Scourge was a bit thick (nowadays they'd be the Taliban). Also they seem to accept Angel into their ranks a little too easily. Even their vehicles look Nazi-like and DB's hair looks very 1940s.
    Best line:
    Doyle; Is that it? Am I done?

    Jeez, how did they get away with that?
    Doyle's melting face
    Apocalypses: 4
    Angel Cliches (Cordy's ad is one big Angel cliche)
    Damsel in distress; nope, 2.
    Inverting the Hollywood cliche;
    The sidekick sacrifices himself to save the day rather than the hero
    In disguise; 3 as a Nazi/scourge
    DB get's his shirt off; 3
    Cordy's tatto;2
    Cheap Angel; 2. Exactly what do all these people owe Angel money for?
    Fang Gang in bondage:
    Cordy: 5
    Angel: 4
    Wes: 1

    Fang gang knocked out:
    Cordy: 8
    Angel: 7
    Wes: 1
    Doyle; 1

    Kills:
    Cordy: none this ep. 3 vamps, a demon from her time in Sunnydale
    Angel: 2 Scourge for Angel. So that gives Angel 8 vamps, 6 demons, 2 humans.
    Doyle; 1 vamp

    Fang Gang go evil:
    Cordy: 1
    Angel: 1

    Alternate Fang Gang:
    Cordy: 2
    Angel: 5

    Characters killed: the treacherous first mate so we won't count him

    Recurring characters killed;
    1; Goodbye Doyle

    Total number of Angel Investigations:
    2, Angel and Cordy

    Angel Investigations shot:
    Angel: 5,
    Packing heat;
    Doyle; 1

    Notches on Fang Gang bedpost:
    Cordy: 1?
    Angel: 1;Buffy

    Kinky dinky:
    The wonderfully named Big Randy.
    Captain Subtext;
    Doyle imagines Angel in tights.
    Know the face, different character; 2
    Parking garages;
    2
    Guantanamo Bay;
    Buffy characters appearing in Angel; (unless someone can correct me no original Angel character ever appears on Buffy?)
    5; Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy
    Questions and observations;
    So goodbye Doyle, we hardly knew you. A good ending for the character but all the more sad by Glenn Quinn's death shortly afterwards. Cordy refers to 'one of the cheaper Baldwins' in her description of the advert. I always thought Adam Baldwin was one but according to IMDB no he's not. Angel on a motorbike, Cordy drives a truck, is there no end to her talents? Once again we see demons who are slowly being won over to humanity. The Scourge are trying to stop this but are unwittingly aping human's themselves.
    Marks out of 10; 7/10, a weak ep rescued by it's awesome finale
  • The saddest angel ep ever.

    This is the saddest episode of angel ever. It is the ep in which Doyle sacrifices himself to save the life of millions of other half demons. i dont know why they would even entertain the idea of killing of such a good character. but maybe it was nessacary. a sad episode indeed.
  • Its the saddest episode ever, I freaked out the first time I saw it.

    This is one of those episodes that made me FEEL. I put emphasis on that because it needed it. This is the saddest episode of any show I've ever seen.

    First, the bad things about this episode. Umm....OH YEAH! My favorite character died. He may have died a noble death but death nonetheless and it made me sad.

    Now, the good stuff. The villians in this episode were really creative. They were like demon nazis out to kill anything that has human blood in them, "The Scourge". Ha, clever name. I like how they touched back into Doyle's past. I'm glad that Doyle and Cordy finally began to develop their. I'm just sorry it was too late, Doyle sacrifices his life to save a pack of half breeds.

    Sorry for such a short review its just that I really can't say anything about this episode except that it was an extremely sad one.

    Why oh why kill the most interesting, wonderful and lovable character of the show? Its just not right. Did they really hate the fans this much?

    ‘Hero’ might be one of the prettiest and most depressing episodes ever to be made.

    It begins with Cordy’s idea for a commercial, the ‘Dark Avenger’, meaning Angel saving a pretty woman (herself) from a robber.

    Angel doesn’t really want to make a commercial like that and completely ignores her, then she takes the next best thing which is Doyle.

    But Doyle isn’t very good at it and read rates as rats. Cordy gives him the weasel factor but takes it back, she’s just upset about Angel ignoring their calls.

    Doyle tries to talk to Angel who then tells him about what really happened with Buffy and that he was a human. Doyle thinks it’s hard to believe because he wouldn’t have done something like that, he doesn’t see himself as a hero/. But Angel tells him that he never knows until he’s tested.

    I really adored Doyle and Cordy and wish that they would have had more time together. Doyle tells Cordy about Angel and his other wordly experience and just wen he’s about to tell Cordy his demon secret he gets a vision about a repressed demon tribe.

    Angel and Doyle go to the place in Doyle’s vision and they find those people. They tell about the promised one who they think is Angel and about the Scourge.

    The Scourge are pure blooded demons who want to exterminate all the half breeds who in this episode represent the Jews and the Scourge represent those evil Nazi’s. We also get a flashback from Doyle when he found out he was a demon and that another asked for his help but Doyle didn’t want to help and when he got the vision he found their dead bodies so it was already to late.

    Meanwhile one of the demons doesn’t want to stay because he doesn’t believe in a promised one. It’s a boy demon called Riff, Doyle tries to stop him and is eventually able to bring him back but then it’s to late because those army demons are right behind them. Doyle tries to distract them and Angel grabs him and has a plan. He acts as if he hates half breeds and breaks his neck infront of those Nazi ones and joins them,. The boss of them has a plan how to kill them all, with some light thing which will annihilate the.

    Meanwhile on a ship that will take the demons, Doyle gets back with Riff. Cordy now knows that Doyle is a demon and slaps him and then asks him to ask her out on a date but when he wants to Angel arrives with those demons following him. Then the scourge come on the ship and they put that light thing. Angel breaks the bosses neck but then realise that the only way to stop it is for him to jump even if that will kill him. Cordy and Doyle don’t want him to and then Doyle realised what has to do and hits Angel of stage, then kisses Cordy and something blue goes from his mouth into hers ‘I guess we’ll never know, if this is a face you can learn to love’ and then jumps.

    The most beautiful and heartbreaking part of the episode was the tape at the end that Cordy filmed. She and Angel watch it because it’s the only thing they still have of him and at the end of it Doyle says ‘Is that it? Am I done’?

    Which is heartbreaking and probably the saddest line I’ve ever heard.

    R.I.P. Allen Francis Doyle.

    R.I.P. Glenn Quinn

  • One best episodes ever, and one of the biggest tear-jerkers as well.

    9.3
    "Superb"
    Based loosely on the persecution of the Jews, we finally find out about Doyle's past and a lot of secrets are put into the open. Cordelia and Doyle have a few romantic bits (alright, one) and there is some great dialogue and music.

    So the story goes, Doyle has a vision of some part-human demon refugees who are on the run from 'The Scourge', a race of pureblood (though in Buffy, Anya's description of purebloods doesn't match up) demons who want all the halfbreeds dead. So the gang take up the case and try to spirit them away on 'a cruise', but The Scourge find out.

    With certainly the most memorable Angel ending ever, this episode is painful, tearful, and downright brilliant. Emotional subplots between Doyle and Cordy are played up, Angel FINALLY doesn't get all the glory of saving the world, and there is a great line about Angel putting on tights. One of my favourite eps, if you're not crying at the heartbreaking finale, there is something most definately wrong with you.
  • i'm a full-time overly brainwashed Buffy fan, but when i watched this episode, and "I will always remember", i was quickly drawn in. There really are a few heroes left in this world, but Doyle, he was difinetly one of them.

    I'm a full time rock on Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan....and as upset as I was that there won't ever be a season 8, I decided to switch gears to Angel (where I live, everything is shown real slow, Buffy is long finished here, but there is two different angel seasons going on, one on season 5, one starting over at season one...so i'm watching that). And then I saw the episode "I will always remember you". You guessed it...Buffy was there, and i was basically hating the fact that Buffy's memory was erased of that awesome night with the cookie dhough fudge mint chip. And the whole night I was thinking..."That was seriously the saddest episode I've seen" and I was wrong. I just saw this episode today, and it changed my way of thinking. How Doyle sacrificed himself for the good of others. Only a true soul could do that.

    And I must relate this to Buffy. This episode of How Doyle died is like how Buffy sacrificed herself in "The Gift", In the Final Season of Season 5. They both are truly heroes. And it was just heartbreaking to see that Doyle and Cordy had like less than a five second "moment", and then he jumped. The way his formed changed while he was trying to shut down the light thing, from his demon form to human, then to flesh, has a powerful impact. "(changes into demon form), too bad we'll never know if you'll grow to love this face" was a touching quote and Doyle's last words. I was beginning to think that in the real world, people are too overly brainwashed to have true souls like Doyle and Buffy (and Spike, but i'm not going to get to that)...And what this episode represented really woke me up.....->

    ive been a fan of angel since the first show city of but this is without a doubt my favorite eposide. i was never a big fan of buffy and only like it because of the supporting cast espically angel and spike though i did watch every eposide with nathan fillion but of course thats cause of firefly. the ending of this eposide is one of the very few times i actually formed tears because of an angel eposide.\"the good fight yeah you never know till you\'ve been tested i get that now.\" i mean that plus the video they were making makes this eposide one of the best eposides of angel.

    \"if you need help then look no further angel investigations is the best our rats are low\" \"rates\" \"it says rats our rates are low but our standards are high if your in trouble and at the end of your ropes you need someone you can depend on and thats what youll find here someon who will go all the way who will protect you no matter what so dont lose hope. come on over to our offices and youll see that there are still heros left in this world is that it?\" \"am i done?\"

    In my opinion Hero is one of the best Angel episodes ever. Just as Doyle and Cordy are getting closer he sacrifices himself for the greater good. Its a very emotional episode because his death was very unexpected at the time. Glenn Quinn's performance definately brings a tear to the eye and the ending is fantastic. Ending the episode with "Is that it? Am I done?" leaves me in shock everytime. A classic season one episode.

    What an episode. Doyle dies!

    Doyle sacrifices himself to safe a bunch of half demons and passes his visions to Cordy. A tearjercker at the end. He finally admits his feelings for Cordy then he dies. sooo sad. This is such a series classic. I wish Doyle could have been in at least a few more episodes. I mean I love Wesley but Doyle was awesome.
  • Doyle must meet one of his greatest fears when the gang try to protect some half demons from the scourge, who try to kill anything with human blood.

    Poor Doyle, after only nine episodes the poor half demon meets his end. Quite possibly one of the best angel episodes ever. In this episode Doyle chooses to sacrifice his own life in order to save other half demons, he also passes his visions on to Cordy without her knowing. In the episode we also get to visit Doyle’s past where he first hears about the scourge. (Evil pure breeds out to kill anything with human blood). This was an extremely sad episode, with Doyle\'s death unexpected at the time this episode has a powerful ending. It is also nice to see a episode where the spotlight is not directly pointed at angel.
  • When a group of half-demons that are persued by the evil racist group, the Scourge comes to town, it's Angel and company's job to protect them.

    This is without a doubt my favourite Angel episode ever! I must have seen it about 20 times, yet I still cry at the end. I thought the use of the advert they made was excellent as the first time I saw it, it made me laugh, but the second time, it was so sad. Both times gave the line "Is that it? Am I done?" two different meanings.

    This episode had everything, from romance to evil natzi demons. The only downside for me was that my favourite ever character in Buffy and Angelverse had died, but even that can\'t take away from the beauty that it this episode. I just wish that we could have found out if Cordy could have learned to love Doyle.

    Doyle! Why did they do this to you?

    This was the first episode I saw of Angel and it got me hooked. I only saw the last 15 minutes of it but I went out and bought Season One on DVD.

    The first time I saw it, it made no difference to me that \"the weird green guy\" died but this time, after watching the rest of Season One, I\'m still crying!!

    Then I find this great site and it tells me that Glenn Quinn is actually dead. Now I\'m crying more!

    RIP Allen Francis Doyle

  • Doyle's Beautiful End

    9.5
    "Superb"
    We only had him for nine episodes, but this episode does a brilliant job of making us miss Doyle when he dies at the end of it. We finally see some of the background of his character, he and Cordelia finally seem to be together, and then they give us Doyle's heroic sacrifice. The brilliant device of the video recording always makes me particularly sad. It's meaning changes completely; it's used for comic effect at the top of the show and then at the end it's the real tear-jerking moment. Until that moment we're too shocked to really feel anything. The Scourge is a decent villain, and the "good demons" vs. "bad demons" in this episode begin to raise some interesting questions that will be with us through the end of the show. However, it's a good thing that the Scourge aren't really the point here, because they don't hold up under close scrutiny. The weak link of this episode is the plot, but the holes are not large enough to undermine the emotions it evokes.
  • Casualties of Nazi-Demon War

    5.8
    "Mediocre"
    The last episode to feature Glenn Quinn as Doyle, Hero is a story all about sacrifice and nobility, with Quinn giving an emotionally powerful final performance.

    Hero sees Doyle becoming emotionally involved in a case where Angel Investigations must protect a group of half-breed demons who are seeking shelter from The Scourge, a clan of pure demons who exterminate half-breeds.

    The whole storyline alludes to the prosecution of minority groups, most notably the Nazi regime against the Jews. Writers Howard Gordon and Tim Minear could have written a better episode if this allusion was made a little more subtle. The Nazi/Scourge parallels are just too blatantly obvious and it eventually gets slightly annoying.

    Glenn Quinn is given a decent swan song but his departure should have been featured in an episode that was a little more like an Angel episode. From the whole "helpless demons" story to the "machine that literally dissolves people" plot device, it just didn't feel like something that belonged in the Buffyverse.

    There were some well-written moments though, most notably the opening and closing scenes. The commercial at the beginning of the episode was hilarious and the tag scene at the end is truly heartbreaking. But these scenes of poignancy and sadness are few and far between and no matter how depressing some moments are, the rest of the episode just isn't that great.

    An emotional if slightly tedious episode, Hero is only memorable due to Doyle's death and therefore should be watched. But, unlike many others from season one, it's not exactly an episode you find yourself watching again and again.

    I heard that they were going to kill off Doyle but I asumed it would be at the end of the season. When I watched this and I saw him jump I yelled DON'T DO IT DOYLE!!! Then I thought hay maybe he won't die, maybe his deamon powers would safe him, but Noo they had to murder him. Then I thought hay maybe Angel would go to the Powers That Be and get him back, but then they had to mean and say no. Then I heard that he was supposed to be brought back to life on the show, but then he had to do a stupid thing like do drugs. For the rest of the episode those Nazi deamons suck big.
  • The real reason why Doyle died...or why Glenn Quinn had to leave:

    "Great"
    This episode is below average (for the Angel-series, that is) and I didn\'t feel sad when Doyle died because I knew it was gonna happen. BUT, the only question that popped up in my head was \'why?\', so I started googling.

    The real reason why Doyle died...or why Glenn Quinn had to leave the show: Glenn was having a drinking and / or drugproblems in his personal life. That was the reason why he was simply \"fired\" back in 1999. I\'m sure the writers would have kept Glenn on the show if everything was going fine, because he was a great character.

    3 years after this episode aired, Glenn Quinn died of heroin overdose in his friends appartment (december 2002).

    This is the episode that hooked me on Angel. This is when 'Angel' dealt with story arcs in 2-3 episodes instead of half of a season. They could've dragged this out for at least another episode but they didn't. After the emotional "I Will Remember You" episode, they don't give you long to pine over another Angel/Buffy moment, they dive right into the reason why Angel made the decision that he did make. Someone was guaranteed to die and it could've been Angel and or Buffy and that can't happen...that would end two television series at once now wouldn't it. ;-) So in less then 10 episodes we have a MAIN character die. There are two ways that this can go; either people are going to be angry because one of the main characters is dead or you will be like me....become a fan for life. There was a sense of seriousness and randomness that stays with this show for the rest of the series because of what happens in this episode the same way that "I Will Remember You" set the standard for the emotional part of the series.

    Even though we didn't get to know Doyle as well as many of us would have liked this was really the big tear jerker of the season. It cemented Doyle's memory into every fan of the series and made us love him all the more. The connection between he and Cordy was one of very natural chemistry, though again we didn't get to see a lot of it over the short time he was on the series, that was almost from the start.

    Glen Quinn had a charm that I know many of us miss as much as we miss him.

    a very upsetting episode and maybe the best of the first season where doyle sacrifices himself for some no-life demons and his friends proving that he was really a hero and that you never know if you are until you have to do it.

    the episode was amazing from start to end and when doyle jumps its so hard not to get tears. the best was the tape how smartly it was done and used for doyle to see the last goodbyes and ask if he's done. this is one of those episodes where i can't think of a better show,

    This episode was so sad. Doyle's kind are in trouble and angel and them are helping them back home. There is this army of human killers who want to kill all half demons. The breed of demons they help are in hiding and angel gets them a ship out of the country. Then they find out that they were tricked and are trapped inside the ship. The human killers turn on this huge light that will kill everything with human blood. Angel wants to try and stop it but doyle pushes him off. Then he makes this speech about being a hero. He kisses Cordelia and jumps to turn the thing off. Then hes dead. It's really sad when angel and cordelia are watching the video that doyle made. This episode made me cry. One of the best in my oppinion.

    This was the first episode of 'Angel' that made fans open their eyes and realise that this spinoff series was definitely going to be darker and more grown up than its predecessor, 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'!

    Glenn Quinn pulls a blinder in this episode as he plays his character, Allan Francis Doyle, for the last time.

    Boreanaz and Carpenter also play the part perfectly for this tearjerker of an episode, but it is obvious that Quinn is stealing the show this time around.

    The episode is beautifully scripted and well written and is a greatribute to Doyle's character, despite the controversy happening behind the scenes between Quinn and his producers.

    Every true 'Angel' fan will always remember 'Hero' as a landmark episode on the show and is a fan favourite without a doubt.

    Doyle will always be remembered as a true hero.

    We went from "I Will Remember You" to this? Doyle, who we had grown to love, is no more. What really killed me is he had finally (FINALLY!) grown on Cordy enough to where she wanted to go out with him. But in the larger scheme of things, Doyle had an atonement he had to fulfill just as much as Angel does. He knew that Angel had to go on doing what he was doing and help the helpless. He knew that the only way for Angel to do this was if he gave his own life in place of Angel. That last kiss with Cordelia.....it resonated for seasons to come even though we didnt know *why* right at that moment.

    "Good"
    Fun words to learn and know: Doyle: “I think people'll be pouring in once they hear about our low rats.”

    Dialogue to lose inside the sofa in Hell: Angel: “You catch on quick, football head.”

    Farewell Doyle, you’ll be missed. However, if Doyle had to go, I suppose it’s best that he did so in sacrifice to the greater good. And if there’s one scenario guaranteed to make me turn on the water works, this is it. I have to admit that it’s a bit hard to believe that the writers always intended for Doyle to die in this manner, as it seems a little rushed. What is it about this particular group of people/demons that made Doyle decide it was better to die and let them live? Or is it just that Angel was willing to die for their cause and he realized the world couldn’t afford to lose Angel, in which case he sacrificed himself to save Angel and not the Listers? I think it would have worked better to stretch this plot over a few episodes. In the first episode of this arc Angel and Doyle could have had the conversation about the pleasures of the flesh vs. duty and obligation, followed by some pretty significant character development on Doyle’s part over the next few episodes. Then, only after Doyle has grown as a person/demon, he’d sacrifice himself to save others. Allow me to illustrate my point a bit more clearly.

    Come with me, if you will, to a place I like to call City of… In response to Angel’s “Why you?”, Doyle says “Well, we’ve all got something to atone for.” So, are we to believe that Doyle refused to help some fellow Brachan demons hide from the Scourge and was punished with the visions that same night? And his spending all of half a day in remorse over this issue got him to the point where he is now willing to give his life in exchange for a group of demon half-breeds? It’s a good story if told over a period time, but, left as is, is simply implausible. And what happened to the Scourge? Did they decide to call it a night? “Ah, well, boys. That’s enough slaughter and mayhem for the time being. Let’s head home.” Seems rather unlikely, doesn’t it? Although I enjoyed this episode, its failure to tie up lose ends and the rushed nature of the climactic ending make it impossible for me to give it too high a grade.

    At hearing of the sacrifice Angel made for Buffy in the previous episode, Doyle thinks Angel made a mistake. Soon, Angel and his friends learn of a group called the Scourge that is out to rid the world of all humans, and demons with some human blood in them. Because of a previous mistake, Doyle thinks it is his responsibility to save a family of demons being pursued by the Scourge. The team sets up a complex plan involving Angel going under cover, and pretending to join the Scourge. Being part of the awful group, Angel learns of a new devide that will make killing humans, and half-demons a lot easier than before. When all fails, Doyle realizes that sometimes it is the right thing to do, to sacrifice things for others, even if it costs you your life.

    Okay I loved this episode. Doyle dying was so very sad but the way the episode was written was just amazing. I loved that Doyle died the Hero and he saved the day it wasn't Angel that saved the day it was Doyle.

    Cordy was great in this one too I loved how she showed that she had actual layers very impressive for Cordy. Her reaction to what happened with Angel and Buffy was perfect I liked how she and Doyle had the no keeping secrets talk it was so adorable. And I loved how towards the end she was like "Aren't you gonna ask me out already." I liked that she didn't care about Doyle's demon side she was just mad that he had kept that from her.

    Cordy and Doyle were both incredible in this teary episode. This was one of the best and saddest episodes ever.

He finally got Cordelia to fall in love with him and they have their K I S S but right before he sacrificed him self for the greater good! It was the right thing to do and even though i miss him! it was for the best!

    Such a sad episode again! Angel lost Buffy before and is brooding and now they take Doyle away too. That's really, really sad!

    There was just the great friendship started between Angel and Doyle, when Angel told him that he was human and together with his love Buffy and gave it all back! The whole hero speach was sooooo great. And then typical Doyle telling he wouldn't have done that!

    Cordelia and Doyle were so close to come together and we were all so happy about that, but then he had to die!

    Have you seen the two actors how great they expressed the feeling of the characters after the hero Doyle left his life for these half demons?

    This is definetly one of my favorite episode of season one I will watch many times again!

    This episode is so sad!!! The ending makes me cry. When Cordy and Angel are watching the commercial and at the end Doyle says "Is that it? Am I done" That part makes me cry. I love the commercial "If you need help, then look no further. Angel Investigations is the best. Our rats are low... (What? It says "rats." Sorry.) Ahem... our rates are low, but our standards are high. When the chips are down, and you're at the end of your rope you need someone that you can count on. And that's what you'll find here -- someone that will go all the way, no matter what. So don't lose hope. Come on over to our offices and you'll see that there's still heroes in this world." There's another quote where Doyle is about to jump. He says to Angel. "Never know your strenth until your tested. I get that now" Sad! Then he turns to Cordy kisses he then tells her "To bad we'll never know if this is a face you could learn to love. That right there makes me cry even thinking about it.
  • My emotions were still raw from the last episode and you go and do this to me!!! i DON'T GET IT!!!

    It was just so so sad!!! I'm a little Irish girl and I don't see why the hot Irish guy had to bite the big one!!! Okay I do get it, it was important to thee overall story of the show, but still!! Iloved Doyle, and I was all set for a doyle and Cordy wedding!! Which I know would never have happened under the circumstances but still, a girl can dream!!! Poor Angel!! Poor Cordy!!! Why do soo soo many people on this show end up dying!!! I have real issues with this!! I'm a very emotional person, but you can probably tell that...

    The Doyle/Cordy kiss was adorable. It's just a pity that I was crying too hard to see it properly at the time.
  • “Is that it? Am I done?” – Doyle.

    The Powers That Be that make Angel follow up “I Will Remember You”, a strong, powerful episode with another one that’s just as good, if not better. This time, the team are trying to protect a group of half-demons from the Scourge, pure demons that want to kill off all the half bloods – which includes Angel and Doyle. The scene where Doyle sacrifices himself is so painful to watch because I know how it’s going to end and every time that I watch this episode on DVD (which is often) I keep hoping that somehow it will change. I can’t believe that they are breaking up the Angel team. I thought the way that these three interacted with each other was great, especially the Doyle-Cordelia banter and hidden flirting, I think that they would have made such a cute couple. I really liked the end scene as well where Angel and Cordelia are watching the commercial and it ends with Doyle saying, “Is that it? Am I done?” It was a really touching end to a really sad episode.
