    LOYALTY

    The Good;
Really is Wes' ep and he's put through the wringer here. Or so we think, it's nothing compared to what he's going to face...

    The Bad;
Holtz's spy seems to learn a lot about AI very quickly. Why doesn't Holtz just continue to work with Sahjhan? How can Lilah be so confident in betraying WR&H, what about the mindreaders? Or do they not apply over a certain level of promotion?

    Best line:
Gunn; (of ice hockey) "You do realise this is the whitest sport known to man?" (obviously never seen synchronised swimming)

    Apocalypses: 5

    Angel Cliches
    Inverting the Hollywood cliche;
We think Holtz will possibly kill Aubrey for failing him but again he shows great understanding. It's no wonder he commands respect amongst his people so easily (a mirror image of Wes in command?)

    Questions and observations;
Gunn empathises with Audrey after she talks of killing her son. So does Angel but his words have extra resonance for Wes. Holtz actually shows considerable understanding of AI and Angel also observes that he considers Holtz a good man and justified in his need for vengence.
Lilah talking to her mum is heartbreaking. A staple of fanfic is that no matter what goes wrong for AI Lilah's mum dies and without the need to support her any more she decides to switch sides and help the good guys. How do they twig Aubrey? Has Lorne told them that Holtz is recruiting people like her? Or did Angel's vamp senses simply smell Holtz's scent off her? All the stuff between Lilah and Sahjhan is hilarious. Angel memorised CC's credit card number but in fairness he has given her a big roll of cash for her holiday.

  • Loyalty

    9.0
    "Superb"
Loyalty was a really great episode of Angel. This episode had many revelations. There was action, drama, character development, supernatural entities, and an over all great story. A lot of minor stories occur in this episode but they are all connected to the bigger picture. I really enjoyed watching this episode because it has all of the classic elements that make this show fun to watch. Wesley is faced with difficult questions, while Gunn and Fred get even closer. The ending of this episode was kind of creepy and I can't wait to find out what will happen next. This is definitely an important episode!!!!!!!
  • Things get darker.

    9.3
    "Superb"
Loyalty is a dark episode that changed the entire series and shapes the characters in ways no other episode has. After the this episode, and the following two, no one is quite the same and entire relationships are destroyed in the process.

The story picks up where last episode left off with Wesley discovering the prophecy that Angel will kill Connor. He's obviously not coping with it well at all and is another huge blow on top of Fred choosing Gunn over him. He looks unkempt and exhausted and is trying to do anything to disprove the prophecy. The dream in the teaser where Angel kills Connor sets the tone for the rest of the entire season and let's us know we're in for a rocky ride. Alexis Denisof is truly excellent here, and it's incredible how he can go from a dork one episode to a confused, dark man who is potentially going to betray all his nearest and dearest.

Holtz and Justine were good in this episode. They seem to have formed a close bond since we last saw them but as villains, we just don't fear them because they haven't done anything at all to our characters yet. I like Justine better than Holtz or Sahjhan mainly because Laurel Holloman is a great actress and adds a lot to her character but also because Justine is simply more interesting. Holtz is a good character but not a villain. It shocks me that Sahjhan was the best of all three this episode. He finally did SOMETHING interesting and I have to say his plan truly is excellent. Lilah makes a welcome return and is of course the best villain in the entire show. If only there was no Holtz, things would have been better.

What I like about this episode is that even though Wes is going behind Angel's back, you don't know who's side to choose. If Wes is right then Connor's in grave danger but if not, then it's all just a waste. The title is fitting; do you betray your loyalties to save someone? There is no black and white; no good evil; no right and wrong. But either way, someone will get hurt by the outcome. Gunn and Fred are bordering on soppy area here and it's actually a bit much. There are some really cringe worthy lines here and they're sometimes a bit over the top. I still like them but they need to tone it down a bit. Loyalty is a fantastic episode that sets up next week's amazing "Sleep Tight" brilliantly and changed the entire series in a way no one could have expected.
  • Fear Me, For I am....The Big Talking Hamburger!

    8.0
    "Great"
Loyalty-Wesley preoccupies himself with protecting Connor and foiling a prophecy that Angel will devour his son. Meanwhile, Gunn and Fred investigate a vampire nest, unaware that the woman who hired them is one of Holtz's lackeys.

A intriguing episode which goes deeper into the developements learned at the end of last episode. The opening teaser was Wesley's nightmare sequence was great and Wesley througout was too. We begin to see his character begin to play with his darker side which will grow more as the season progresses. Holtz, Justine, and his new gang of vengeful group of annoyances return. I have to say the Abbrey fake-out was nicely played but I am getting as annoyed as Sahjhan with Holtz. At this point his has done nothing but talk about Angelus this and Angelus that with no sign of being a real threat. It was nice watching the Gunn and Fred relationship, especially how Fred came back to save Gunn. Also, Lilah getting a hold of Connor's blood make for creepy development as you don't know what Sahjhan might have planned for it as her works with her. But the best part of the episode had to be Wesley taking to an oracle through and I'm serious...A large talking hamburger! It looked so cartooney but was just too hilarious. Also, the ending was very shocking as the prophecy begins to come true when Angel's room is bleeding all over Connor as his room burns. But when he said "at least we would have had something to snack on", that was freaky and makes you wonder could Angel really want to eat his own son! All and All, a great episode with some dark developments and character development.
  • The father will kill the son.

    "Great"
In this episode Wesley does all he can to disprove the prophecy that Angel will kill Connor, devotes all his time to saving them both and is haunted by the mere thought of it. The dream sequence in the beginning of this episode is seriously frightening, Wesley dreams of Angel feeding off Connor right in front of him. It's clear that Wesley is in denial and does not want to admit that the prophecy could actually happen. After seeking out on oracle, searching for answers for a moment it seems as though Wesley has faith that the prophecy will not come to pass. But the signs say otherwise.

This episode is actually kind of sad because all Wesley is trying to do is prove the prophecy won't happen, that's all he's doing and he's losing sleep and feeling so guilty about it. The truth is that is loyalty, to go to such lengths to save both Connor and Angel. And Angel! There are quite a few moments in this episode where Angel, unknowingly, makes Wesley feel even more guilty. Talking about what a good friend he is and how he can't wait to see Connor grow. Knowing what happens makes this episode even sadder.
  • Prophecies are nothing but trouble

Wes is having nightmares. He dreams that Angel vamps out and devours Connor, and he looks down and the blood is on his hands (symbolism?!) All seems to be well with Angel, he is falling into his role of Fatherhood more and more and it is evident how much he adores his son. We meet a new client, Aubrey, whose son was turned by vamps. Fred and Gunn end up walking into a trap, turns out Aubrey works for Holtz. Wes tries to disprove a prophecy saying that Angel will kill his son, but he only further proves that it will indeed happen. He finds out that there are 3 portents and they all come true by episodes end. He also finds out Holtz knows that Angel will kill his son and he doesnt intend on letting it happen either.

a very good begin of the wesley episode arc and his struggles with doing what is right.

wesley talks to holtz who convinces him that is the right thing to do and everything wesley tries to disprove works out badly as everything shows him that angel will kill his children. the best part of the episode was wesley talking to a hamburger and that tells wesley when it will start of angel kiloling his son and everything comes out at the end of the episdoe after an earthquake and fire and angel bleeds on little connor. very good episode!
  • Great episode. Wesley is such a great character and here it where it all begans. my favorite scene was with that hamburger. and the end. it's a pretty cold episode but that's what makes it so good.

    Loyalty

Great episode and beginning of the Wes torture. I think Wes was dumb of not telling anyone about what was going to happen. I love Wes' struggles with life and that only gets better later. great episode.

cut to Wesley sleeping. Fred and Gunn enter the room and want to grab his papers but he tells them to leave them. then comes Angel and he wants to show them something. 'he's gonna teach Connor how to die and he bites them and Gunn says to Wes that he's running out of time and blood comes out of the book and Wes wakes up. then comes Angel with Connor 'you've been here all night?'

    the credits start

cut to Angel and Wes with the baby in the hospital. he helps some woman with their babies and they're happy with him. then he goes to a doctor and he says that Connor is very healthy and takes blood and Angel, Wes and Connor leave. then a woman comes in and she changes the baby's blood for other blood. cut to the office and Angel is talking about Connor and he bought some stuff for him and cant wait for Connor to grow up and watching him grow. Wesley listens to it. then comes a woman who needs to talk to them. she says that she was afraid of her own son who had turned a vampire but she didn't let him in and he went into flames. Gunn and Fred are gonna check it out and kill the vamps. then cut to the woman later showing some people pictures of the gang and telling them about the fang gang. Holtz is her boss.

cut to Justine and Holtz and she doesn't understand why those people are working for Angelus. a vampire gets loose and Justine knocks him out and they chain him. then Sahjhan arrives. he wants Holtz to kill Angelus soon but Holtz tells him to leave or he will trap him into an urn and he will be trapped forever in it. cut to Fred going to Wes and she compliments on him and says he should date that woman but he goes kind of upset and tells her that they are here for a job and he wants her to do her job. cut to Sahjhan going to Lilah who was talking to her mom. Sahjhan says he wants to kill Angel and she wants it too and he says he needs the blood of Connor and she has it but she says he's human but Sahjhan says it's because the doctors are looking for the wrong thing.

cut to Fred and Gunn to the place and Gunn wants to relax but Fred wants to work and then she knows that Wes knew about them but Gunn says who cares and they should be together and forget about Wes. so then they kiss and she agrees with him and they go to find the vamps. cut to the hotel and Wes is going out and Angel says he's a great guy. cut to Fred and Gunn watching someone going inside a place and they follow hm and it turns out to be a vampire and more than one and attack them. Gunn tells Fred to leave and Justine is filming everything. Gunn kills one but another grabs him but Fred comes back and together they kill the other two. Justine is surprised and leaves and Gunn and Fred kiss.

cut to Wesley going to a place and does a spell to a hamburger and it speaks to him. it says that Angel will devour his son but the question is when and that Wes' pain still has to come. Wes asks when and the hamburger says after an earthquake, fire and blood. cut to Lilah and Sahjhan meeting in a bar and they can talk and she knows he's afraid of something but he won't tell and Lilah says it already started what she's gonna do for Angel. cut to Wes and Aubrey comes back and she tries to make Wes inlove with her but he knows about her and Angel grabs her from behind. he says if she and her friends every get close to him and his friends and Connor they will kill them and she leaves and then there is an earthquake and Wes realises what it means.

cut to Holtz and his gang and Wes followed the woman and Holtz is annoyed by that but Wes says he would have found them eventually. they wanna fight him but he doesn’t want to and talks to Holtz and he knows about the baby but Wes doesn't trust him. they want to have vengeance because that's the only what most of them have left. cut to Gunn and Fred and they are eating together and Gunn has his doubts and says he's always slaved vampires but never had a Fred before so he would choose for her. he says not to worry cause Wes is a good man and he will do what's right. cut to Wes going over to Angel and they talk and Wes says that love can be a bad thing but Angel says that what he feels for Connor isn't bad but is beautiful. then Wes laughs and thinks that he was overreacting but then there is a big earthquake that makes the room start to burn and Angel grabs Connor and they go outside and Wes sees the fire and blood coming from Angel's head on the baby 'Earthquake, fire, blood' Angel says he thought he was gonna be trapped but at least he would have had a snack in that way.

    Black Out

    ----------

    Best episode quotes:

Angel: It's like a - like a soft gurgle or a wheeze. It might be a wheeze. I heard it last night when I was feeding him. You hear it?

Doctor: All I hear is a normal, healthy little heart.

Angel: You-you don't understand. I-I got like really good hearing. I mean really good hearing.

Doctor: Well, most first time parents do. You said this wheeze or gurgle happened while you were feeding him?

Angel: Is that bad? What is it?

Doctor: In my professional opinion - it's called digestion.

    Angel: Oh.

Wesley: Doctor. During your exam you didn't notice anything - abnormal about him, did you?

Angel: Wes! What kind of question is that? Did you?

Doctor: No. Your son is just fine.

Angel: So - when will we get the results form the blood test?

Doctor: In about a week. It's just precaution, really.

Angel: But he's okay. Connor's healthy?

Doctor: As healthy as a human being can possibly be.

Angel: Did you hear that? Thank you.

    Doctor: No problem.

    Angel: Thanks.

Wesley: Angel? You can let go of the doctor now.

Angel: Oh. Right. Come on, kiddo. Thanks.

Doctor: Take care. And they bitch about my cold hands.

Angel: Check this out! How cute is this? Huh? Seriously.

Gunn: Seriously, I think you got way too much time on your hands.

Fred: Come on. You think it's adorable.

Gunn: Well, yeah, but at least I'm manly enough to deny it.

Aubrey: Last Monday night, my son Timothy snuck out of the house. He loved to go to the pier. He loved the lights of the Ferris wheel there. So I went after him. I searched the pier, the arcade - nothing. So - I sat up all night and waited for him to come home.

Angel: When did he return home? Right before dawn?

Aubrey: Yeah. But his face was... There was something wrong with his face - and - he was so angry. He was calling me names, and pounding on the door, and screaming at me to let him in. - It scared me. I was afraid of my own son. - Then he just - went up in flames.

Wesley: If you'd let him in - he would have killed you.

Aubrey: At least he'd still be alive.

Gunn: No. What came to your door that wasn't your son. It looked like your son, but it wasn't him.

Aubrey: Maybe I could have found a way to turn him back.

Angel: When somebody becomes a vampire there is no turning back. No matter how much you want to believe there is some part of him you can save, all that's left is an evil thing.

Wesley: You say your son went to the pier that night? Gunn, why don't you do a little recon while it's still light out.

Gunn: I can just gear up and take care of it.

Wesley: No. If there is a nest at the pier, we go as a group. Strictly reconnaissance.

Gunn: Okay. Fred and I will check it out.

Aubrey: If I could have found that thing myself, I would have killed it with my bare hands. - It made me afraid of my own little boy.

Lilah: Is everything alright? Are they taking care of you? - No, mom, this is Lilah. You called Lilah. Do you need anything? Do you need money? - No - mom, I can't come over. I'm in Los Angeles. You know that. - Don't cry. Mom, please, stop it. I'm gonna have to call you back. You don't have an appointment.

Sahjhan: That's it? No 'wow, how did he do that?' No screaming in terror? You twenty first century types are so jaded.

Lilah: You're Sahjhan, aren't you? I may be jaded, but I do my homework. And there's a girl downstairs, she's got records on everything that ever happened. My company rocks.

Sahjhan: Yes. I'm familiar with your firm - in this and other dimensions.

Lilah: Great. Let's shorthand. You're a time-shifter. You recruited Holtz in the eighteenth's century, put him on ice for a couple hundred years, so he could pop up and stake Angel when he's least expecting it. And considering that I have yet to put on my boogie-shoes and dance on Angel's pile of dust, I'm imagining that Holtz isn't working fast enough for you. Which leads me to believe, you think my firm can expedite the process.

    Sahjhan: More or less.

Lilah: I hate to disappoint you, but Wolfram and Hart's official policy is to let Angel live until he becomes useful. I'm sworn to obey that policy. Is there some other way I can help you?

Sahjhan: I have a plan. But for it to work, I require a very rare and valuable ingredient. Getting it will be difficult, if not impossible. - I need the blood of Angel's son.

    Lilah: Got it.

Sahjhan: Got it? What do you mean 'got it?' How'd you get it?

Lilah: I swiped it from his doctor's office. I don't know what good it'll do you though. Boys in the lab looked it over, said it was utterly run-of-the-mill. Completely normal.

Sahjhan: That's because they're looking for the wrong thing.

Fred: We should be getting back.

Gunn: Hang on. - I'm getting a tingle.

Fred: Ah - I thought we were gonna try to keep that out of the workplace.

    Gunn: Not that kinda tingle.

Wesley: Thirty four degrees twelve minutes north. One eighteen, twenty one, West. This - must be it. You're supposed to be a statue. I guess you are sort of. If this doesn't work, I'm gonna kill that wizard. Mange sec Loa, alegba, accept this offering - and open the gates of truth."

Loa: How dare you call on the Loa?!

Wesley: I-I - I come in supplication, oh great one, begging for answers to questions only your power can reveal.

Loa: You have answers, human. You search now, only for the question.

Wesley: Is it true? Will Angel really kill his son as it says in the prophecies?

Loa: That the vampire will devour his child is certain. The dark question you harbor is only 'when.'

Wesley: No. - The dark question I harbor is 'how do I stop it?'

Loa: It can not be stopped.

Wesley: It has to be stopped! There must be a way...

    Loa: Your insolence is displeasing.

Wesley: You try chatting with a cranky hamburger.

Loa: You risk your life, human, calling on the Loa. Perhaps what you really seek is death. The pain in your heart begs for it.

Wesley: Then do it and be done. Nothing else will stop me.

Loa: Simple mortal, your pain is just beginning. Betrayal and agony lie in wait, and time - is running out, yet still you ignore the question.

Wesley: Alright then, when? When will this happen?

Loa: The first portent will shake the earth. The second will burn the air. The last will turn the sky to blood.

Wesley: An earthquake? That's the first portent? We live California!

Loa: Earthquake, fire, blood. Be heedful of the signs, human, and trouble the Loa no more.

Holtz: It's time to make a decision, Mr. Wyndham-Pryce. My army is strong and will only increase in number. Fight against us - and this war will become a bloodbath.

Wesley: This isn't war. It's revenge.

Justine: What's wrong with revenge? It's all some of us have left.

Wesley: Look. I can't know what it's been like for any of you.

Holtz: You might soon enough. When I put my son's body into the ground, I had to open the coffin, just to know that he really was in there. You also may discover - that a child's coffin, Mr. Wyndham-Pryce - it weighs nothing.

Fred: You barely touched your food. You feeling okay?

Gunn: Yeah. Yeah. Look. I've been thinking a lot about yesterday. I'm not really mad at Wes.

Fred: You were right though, right? I should have stood up to him.

Gunn: But I understand his position. He's the boss and we got to respect that. His job is to keep things tight and - that's a lot of pressure.

Fred: You aren't changing your mind, are you? - I mean, about - the wanting it all? - As long as we're not smooching on the job, or, you know, being sucked underground by a plant demon. I say, why not go for it?

Gunn: What if we can't manage it all? The job, the romance... Emotions are tricky. They can cloud our judgement, you know, like at the carousel last night. What if it doesn't work?

Fred: So we're back to that? - What if Wesley makes us choose?

Gunn: I've been fighting vamps and demons since I was a kid. That sense of doing good - of waking up in the morning and making the world safer - better... I've always had that.

Gunn: But I never had a Fred before. If we have to - I choose you. - I came on too strong, didn't I?

Fred: No. - You came on just right.

Gunn: Look. Lets try not to worry too much. Wesley is a good man. He'll do the right thing. He always does.

Angel: Come on in. It's okay. Shh. I'll get you some food. You're hungry, aren't you? Have a nice walkHow're you doing? - Really?

    Wesley: I've had better days.

Angel: I know the feeling. I figured it out. How I really knew about Aubrey. - All that pain, that rage... the only way she could deal was to join Holtz, take her revenge. - You know how I knew that?

Wesley: Because you would have done the same.

Angel: It scares me. - You know? - If anything like that ever happened to Connor, I don't know what I'd... I love my son.

Wesley: Love can be a terrible thing.

Angel: I used to think that. I thought love was - something that swallowed you whole, ripped you up inside, but, you know, what I feel for Connor, even that fear... - Wes, it's - it's not terrible. It's beautiful. What's so funny?

Wesley: Life. Life is funny. Listening to stupid people talking to hamburgers is funny. Worrying about things that will never... - It's all so incredibly funny and - and beautiful.

    Angel: It's okay. It's okay. It's alright.

    Wesley: Earthquake. Fire. Blood.
