    The Good;
Season 3 really kicks into high gear with the arrival of Darla and her 'passenger'.

    The Bad;
    ?

    Best line:
    CC; "What are friends for?"
Darla; "Knocking you up and leaving you high and dry"
Just beating Lorne's "It's beyond my Ken and my Barbie and all my action figures"

Jeez, how did they get away with that?
Cordy describes Angel as not going evil but 'going male' which is positively misandrist.

    Angel Cliches
    Inverting the Hollywood cliche;
Darla the pregnant mother is still pure evil, defying all our expectations

    Captain Subtext;
The Kyrumption subtext between CC and Angel finally comes to the fore but Darla's arrival puts a spanner in the works. Darla seems appalled by the world suggesting her baby is already giving her a soul.

Hang on everybody, we're going for a hell of a ride! Holst appears to be a Catholic which is ironic given that he's based on Oliver Cromwell who was markedly anti-Catholic despite being largely regarded as a champion of liberty. Gunn is a great juggler, I wonder if he was taught by the same person as Buffy in 'Hell's Bells'?

  • This was one of the best episodes ever. I already must admit Angel is way better than Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I think all the great episodes are in Angel because it is way more cleverly plotted than Buffy The Vampire Slayer. .

This is the best episode you should see the look on Angels face when he realized he was going to be a Dad it was hilarious!!!! I don't think I will ever stop watching this episode and Cordelia made it all the funnier I do admit I feel so sorry for Angel being in the middle of all this. It must be torture for him finding out Darla is pregnant with a child which is like impossible because vampires can't become pregnant but I guess Angel and Darla must really love each other really really deep down inside . Bottomline is this was the best episode ever and everyone needs to see it please!!!!!!!!!!

Offspring was a perfect and classic episode of Angel. I really enjoyed watching this character driven episode as Angel must decide what to do with Darla who is carrying his child. I think this episode really see's the begining of awareness between Angel and Cordelia's feelings for one another. I thought this episode was very intriguing how the writers tied in the past and brought one of Angel's greatest enemies into the future. I enjoyed the flash backs, as well as the scenes with this new foe who seems to be behind whats happening. I can't wait to watch the next episode and hopefully find out more!!!!!!!
  • Darla returns!

Offspring is a fantastic episode and really gets Season 3's arc going in an excellent way and brings back a much loved character- pregnant no less!

The return of Darla is of course brilliant. In Season 2 I can remember being incredibly drawn to her character and I was delighted to see her back in action in this episode and finally relieve us of the suspense that has been building up ever since "Heartthrob". Julie Benz is magnificent in her role and she has to play yet another side of Darla and does so excellently. The teaser with the flashback to Holtz capturing Angelus in Rome, 1771, sets the tone of which the entire season is to follow. Right from the start, it lets us know we are in for something special, as flashback episodes are usually always brilliant. It also serves to introduce Holtz for the first time he was seen in "Heartthrob" and gives us a glimpse into the relationship he was with Darla and Angelus. What's shocking is that Holtz isn't that bothered about Angelus it seems but more interested in Darla- we've seen her brutality before but this was the first time I ever got the sense she is worse than Anglus. I like Keith Szarabajka as Holtz- he's not really menacing as a villain but as a character he's interesting and it's great to get to know why he hates Darla and Angelus so much for. He probably would have been better if Sahjhan had been even slightly menacing, so they could've provided a good duo but Jack Conley, IMO, is quite bad at Sahjhan. He has no presence on stage and you never truly fear him. He doesn't really act- more just says his lines in a one tone, boring voice and his makeup isn't all that convincing. Villain-wise, he's bad, especially when compared to other amazing Buffyverse villains like Lilah, Drusilla, Glory etc. Bad casting ruins his character.

Darla however, adds an amazing presence to the group and just fits in so perfectly- as a villain she's amazing but as a character she's breathtaking and so multi-layered. It's nigh on impossible to take your eyes from her when she's on screen. She looked hopeless in this episode- bad clothes, unkempt hair, no make-up, a far-cry from the usual glamourous vixen she usually is. Sometimes I did miss the old unpregnant Darla but I felt this storyline was right for her character, so the writers can take her to new places. Her breakdown near the end of the episode is gut wrenching- to see her so utterly destroyed to want death is hard to watch and reminds us of her asking Angel to kill her last season. She's just such a joy to watch in every episode she's in and automatically pushes the episode from great to outstanding.

Aside from the Darla arc, there is some other great character development in this episode, especially for Cordelia and Angel's relationship and growing attraction to one another. This relationship, along with Tara/Willow is the one relationship in the entire 'verse that feels right- like they're meant for each other (and yes I'm including Bangel- they were never right for each other). They just seem to fit perfectly together and Charisma Carpenter and David Boreanaz have amazing chemistry together and play off each other so well. Angel's crush on her is simply excellent to watch and although she never admits in here, it's obvious Cordelia feels the same due to her jealousy and feelings of betrayal when she learns Angel slept with Darla, going as far to take Darla's side over this, leading her to the near fatal experience when Darla bites her. Angel also seems to care about her even more than his unborn child at this stage, saying he'll kill Darla for doing this.

I also have to add in, Lorne- you're not the only who loves Fred. She was so completely loveable here and showed her inner strength in her damnation of prophecy. She's also the first person to notice Angel and Cordy's evident attraction to one another and her whole speech on "cairumption" was great. Offspring is an excellent episode that starts off an arc that continued into the late parts of S4 and brings back Darla, which was always gonna be great. Simply unmissable.

Offspring-As the crew researches a prophecy predicting the imminent arrival of a being who may have a profound impact on the world, Darla arrives at the hotel -- pregnant, angry, and looking for the daddy - Angel. Cordelia, hurt that Angel did not tell her about his night with Darla, takes Darla's side in the matter. Baffled by how the pregnancy is even possible, Angel and company turn to Lorne for some insight.

Well, we finally get into the arc of the season in full swing when Darla finally returns to L.A. knocked up and not happy! It's great seeing the reaction of the whole gang when Darla returns pregnanct. Angel is at a loss for words since he has to explain he slept with Darla, with Cordelia being hurt that he lied to her. Julie is great as the pregnanct vampire gone wild, and there are some tense scenes like her feeding on Cordelia and her stalking kids at an arcade. The best part of the episode with have to be the revelation that the unborn child has a soul, which makes the unholy pregnancy more interesting. The only downside in all of this is that this episode also begins the Holtz arc. Don't get me wrong, the flashback scenes were great as usual and I fell bad that he lost his family, but he never came off as a threat worth building up, that's just my opinion. All and All, a great episode that starts the Miracle Child arc well.

We finally get to see a very pregnant Darla arrive in L.A, after being teased since the season opener about her pregnancy. After she arrives, killing some passengers on a bus (a great scene by the way), she confronts Angel about "what" is growing inside her. Two vampire having a kid, or something, just isn't possible. Or it shouldn't be. As it turns out it's a lot more possible then anyone thought.

At first it seems like Darla could be carrying anything, possibly something quite evil. Though as the episode goes by it becomes obvious that whatever is inside her has got to be good, that's why she had been craving younger and younger blood. Innocent, pure, good blood. My favorite scene of this episode though has got to be between Angel and Darla, when Angel hears his childs heart beat for the first time interrupting him from finally killing Darla. The look on his face, David and Julie did a great job this episode.

The gang researches the Nyazian prophecy and tries to make heads or tails of it. Angel is beginning to come to grips that YES he has strong feelings for Cordy and he is pretty close to telling her how he feels when....BAM! Darla shows up and is visibly very pregnant (as we the viewers already knew!) Cordy is beyond mad at Angel because he promised her that he never slept with Darla back when he had gone dark. Any progress he had made with Cordy is now down the drain. Darla just wants to know WHY she is pregnant. The gang ends up at Lornes and he is just as baffled by the pregnancy as they are. Cordy learns the hard way to NOT trust Darla because she bites her. Angel throws Darla across the room and she disappears. We later find out something very important about the baby: It has a soul. And....Holtz is back!

although well written and funny it still doesn't achieve what previous darla episodes could. it was a good episode but there were some things that just didn't add up.

I loved how angel begins to realise that he cares more for cordy than he ever thought but ruined it when she found out that he slept with darla. yeah darla is now pregnant and hungrier than ever, angel is ofcourse surpised to find out he is going to have a baby. the episode is sweet but a little rough around the adges
  • And finally, darla arrives!

Well after the wait darla finally arrives at Angel HQ. And the reactions were great. Angel seemed a little too relaxed and laid back through this whole thing considering he was going to be a father! I thought Cordy would take a little longer to get over what Angel did. It was also an exciting episode with Darla running around trying to get a child to eat! Nice to see Lorne getting his club back together after al that happened! Although after what hapened to Cordy he may want to get that spell strengthened! Exellent start to Darla's major role this season.
  • This is one of my least favorites of the season but still pretty damn good. Darla comes back and ofcourse. she makes this episode. the Pregnant Darla vs Angel fight was very exiting. but the episode could have been a little better even.

    Black Out

    ----------

    Best episode quotes:

Holtz: I don't want anything. My family is gone. I don't trust you to give me Darla, although I will find her, you know that. My only desire here - is to discover if a thing such as yourself can be made to pay for its sins. You're a demon. It is your nature to maim and kill. But you were also once a man. If we beat and burn the demon out of your living flesh, will there be anything left? Anything at all? I doubt it. But I'm willing to spend the next fortnight of my life finding out. - In either event - you have no soul, you can not be saved.

    Angelus: Darlin'?

    Darla: What?

Angelus: Shouldn't we be killing Holtz?

Darla: I know, but it's just so much fun ruining his life. He's like family now.

    Angel: What's this?

Cordelia: Oh, it's just so dark and lifeless down here, I thought I'd brighten it up a little for you. You can't exactly go out and enjoy the sunny fields of nature, but that doesn't mean we can't bring a little bloom into your darkness.

    Angel: They're fake.

Cordelia: Yeah. You put something real in this hellhole and it die like that. Thank you, Cordelia?

Angel: You know, I've been around a long time...

Cordelia: Which reminds me. Next birthday, you think we could skip the two-hundred and fifty odd candles on the cake and the inevitable fire marshal and just go and just go with a little song?

Angel: And I've never known anyone like you.

Cordelia: Well, duh! Times a wasting, big guy. Can we do it? Hi-yeah!

Angel: Okay. Last time we were working on not pulling your punches and your kicks. Right? Don't worry about me. That's good. Good! Where is your weight? Balls of your feet?

Cordelia: Oops! Oh god, you said that... Are you okay?

Angel: I'm a vampire. You can't hurt me. Good.

Cordelia: Ow. That doesn't feel right.

Angel: Just relax. You have to bend.

Cordelia: I don't bend there. - Okay. Now that's downright unnatural.

Angel: I know it feels strange, but if an attacker comes at you from behind, you wanna be able to shift all your weight immediately to your other foot so you can spin and kick. Here, you try it. Whoa! Easy. Alright. That's alright. That's better. We'll keep - working on it. Okay. That's probably enough for today.

Cordelia: Yeah, well, we could do more of it, but then I'd have to ice every bone in my body. See you. Hey, Fred.

    Fred: Hey! - Kye-rumption.

Cordelia: Well - back at you.

    Angel: What did you say?

Fred: Kye-rumption. It's the one nice word I remember from the Pylean hell dimension.

    Angel: What's it mean?

Fred: It's when two great heroes meet on the field of battle and recognize their mutual fate. It's also a kind of grog made out of the ox dung but that's archaic.

    Angel: Oh, ah, that's interesting.

Fred: When I see you and Cordelia sparring Kye-rumption always comes to mind.

    Angel: Me and Cordelia.

Fred: I know. She's such a hero, with the visions and the courage. It's only natural that you and she would be drawn to one another. - Oh! Plastic flowers! My favorite! They never fade, you know.

Angel: Oh, whoa, wait a minute. There's nothing going on between me and Cordelia.

    Fred: Nothing but Moira.

    Angel: Who's Moira?

Fred: Moira is the gut physical attraction between two larger than life souls.

Angel: Ha. No, there is no attraction. Cordelia is a friend. Someone I work with. That's all.

Fred: See? You're being chivalrous. Because you 're a hero, just like her. You got Kye-rumption!

    Angel: Stop using that word!

Fred: Oh. - That can't be right. - Unless the world ended last March.

    Cordelia: Hey.

    Angel: Hey.

Cordelia: Why are you looking at me like that?

    Angel: Ah, no reason.

Cordelia: Okay. It's getting creepy now.

Angel: I was just thinking about things. - People. You know. How they relate. Take you and me for instance. We're very different. Very different. Obviously human. vampire. Woman. man...pire.

Cordelia: Has someone been putting vodka in your blood?

Angel: See? You're funny! And I, well I get off a good one every once in a while, but you...

Cordelia: Angel, are you trying to say you love me?

    Angel: What?

    Cordelia: I love you too.

Angel: You do? When did this...

Cordelia: Angel loves me. I love him.

    Angel: Oh, my god!

Cordelia: You guys love us and we love you.

    Fred/Wesley/Gunn: We love you Angel.

Cordelia: They were all saying it earlier. Just in case this prophecy comes true and we all die. - You're not gonna wanna hug, are you?

    Angel: No.

Cordelia: God knows we've been through a lot together.

Angel: That's really all I was trying to say, that we've been through so much together, you and me, as friends. You've seen the - good, - and the not so good.

Cordelia: Just like you have in me. And for the record: the good I've seen far outweighs the bad.

    Angel: Thanks. You, too.

Cordelia: Hey, what are friends for?

Darla: If you ask me, they're for knocking you up and leaving you high and dry. Hello, lover. Long time no see.

    Angel: Darla.

    Cordelia: Darla?

    Wesley: Darla!

    Fred: Who's Darla?

Gunn: Angel's old flame from way back.

Fred: Not the one that died?

Gunn: Yeah. No, not that one. The other one that died and came back to life. She's a vampire.

Fred: Y'all have a chart or something?

Gunn: In the files. I'll get it for you later.

Angel: Well, when did this happen?

Darla: You know exactly when it happened.

Cordelia: Angel - did - you and Darla...?

    Angel: Uh...This is impossible.

Darla: Tell me about it - daddy!

    Cordelia: You slept with her?

Angel: Vampires can't have children. Wesley?

Wesley: Ah, no, he's right. It's not possible.

Cordelia: That's not what I asked.

Darla: You know we can't. I know we can't. But - we did.

Fred: I wonder if this might not be that bad thing we were expecting.

Darla: What did you do to me?

    Cordelia: Stop that!

    Angel: It's okay. It's alright. I'm okay.

Cordelia: You'll hurt her! Haven't you done enough? Here, sit down. You should get off your feet. Can we get her some water?

Angel: Cordy that's Darla. Maybe you don't want to...

Cordelia: Did you or did you not look me in the eye and say that you would never do a thing like this with her?

Darla: Oh, he lied? What a surprise.

Fred: Hi. I'm Fred. Is water okay, or did you want some blood?

Angel: Cordy. I'm sorry - I lied. It was just - it was a very dark time.

Cordelia: Oh! You used her to make you feel better during your dark time. Well, that makes it all heroic.

Angel: It wasn't like that. It just - happened. It wasn't like I went evil or anything, I just...

Cordelia: You just went male. Have you been to a doctor.

Darla: No. But I have been to every shaman and seer in the Western Hemisphere.

Wesley: And what did they say?

Darla: They don't know what it is. They don't know what it means. Nothing like this has ever happened.

Angel: Maybe it's an hysterical pregnancy.

Darla: You wanna feel it kick?

Cordelia: Does it kick a lot?

    Darla: Like crazy.

Angel: well, now wouldn't that be the first sign of...hysteria?

Cordelia: What can we do for you?

Darla: Well, you can get you little gang of supernatural detectives to find out what the hell is happening to me and how to stop it.

Cordelia: Are you gonna take some responsibility here? Angel?

Angel: Oh, me? - Of course I am. - Wes, lets get on this right now.

    Wesley: What do you suggest?

Angel: I suggest you use your books and find out what's going on. What, do I have to think of everything?

Wesley: Oh, here it is. It says 'I have absolutely no idea what's going on.

Fred: Can I say something about destiny?- Screw destiny! If this evil thing comes we'll fight it, and we'll keep fighting it until we whoop it. 'cause destiny is just another word for inevitable and nothing's inevitable as long as you stand up, look it in the eye, and say 'your evitable!' - Well, you- you catch my drift.

Lorne: Wow. I like her so much!

    Cordelia: How're you feeling?

    Darla: Just crazy.

    Cordelia: What?

Darla: Why would anyone bring something into this world?

Cordelia: I was pregnant once. I was out to here - overnight! Mystical thing. I didn't go to term, but while it lasted, hooh! Talk about uncomfortable! Your back and legs hurt all the time and first you're sick to your stomach and you can't eat anything and then your ravenous! Are you able to eat or do you just...

    Darla: What? Drink?

Cordelia: Well, it's - really none of my business, is it? - You should rest and I should I'll just be real close by. If there is anything that you need... Anything at all...

Darla: I'm hungry all the time. It's weird.

Cordelia: Sure. You're eating for two now. It's only natural.

Darla: No, what's weird is - no matter how much I feed - I can't seem to get full.

Gunn: We tried to stop her by hitting her fists and feet with our faces.

Angel: I'm not gonna keep telling you how sorry I am. I'm gonna tell you - that she'll never do it again.

Cordelia: It was my fault, Angel. I felt sorry for her. She looked so helpless - like a mother. - I forgot what she really was.

Wesley: Why does he think he has to do everything alone?

Fred: I think he just can't bear to have us see him do it.

Wesley: Kill Darla? She did try to kill Cordy - and she's a vampire.

Fred: Who is carrying his child. The one thing he can never have, even if he lives forever.

Darla: Oh. I love children. I could just - eat them up.

Darla: You so want to play the good guy, don't you? Yeah. You're the good guy who did this to me. You may have the face, but you don't know the hunger! It pounds! You can't make it go away! You can't stop it!

    Angel: I'll stop it!

Darla: How could you put this in me? I hate you! They breathe. They breathe and pound. I don't breathe, you idiot! You can't strangle me!

Angel: I'm not gonna strangle you.

Darla: Come on! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Make it stop!

Angel: No it won't, Darla. Darla, listen to me.

Darla: Make it stop! Make it stop.

Angel: The child. The child has a heartbeat. It has a soul.

Darla: No! Not my child! No!

Angel: Our child. Ourchild. Our child. That's why you've been craving purer and purer blood. That's why it's been driving you out of your mind. It has a soul.

    Darla: No, it doesn't.

    Angel: It does.

    Darla: It can't.

Angel: Yes, it does. It does.

    Angel: Here, drink this.

    Darla: Pig's blood?

Angel: You need to keep yourself nourished. You'll get used...You're not alone in this anymore. We'll deal with this together.

Darla: Gosh. I'm the luckiest vampire girl in the whole world. - Get away from me.

Angel: Try and get some sleep.

Darla: How's Cordy? She wanna come up and visit?

    Fred: Uh-oh.

    Cordelia: A good, stiff uh-oh?

Fred: Remember before when I said I thought that maybe, possibly, perhaps I might have been off in my earlier calculations? And you asked Wes if he thought if the Tro-clan was prophesied to arise or be born and he said it could be both? And we all know that the Latin for arrive is arripare, to come to land or possibly in this instance simply to come to, as from a deep sleep?

    Angel/Wesley: Fred!

Fred: Right. I believe that whatever this thing is, it's arriving right about three, two, now.

Sahjhan: The weight of time is heavy on the world. And all men born must die. But there are worlds unknown, where dreamers dream and sleepers sleep, and patiently await. As pledged in Caladan by Cod-she, One shall awaken in the first year of the final century. That one, who lived before and joined Cod-she in the great sleep. Arise, as was promised and foretold. Arise. - Arise! Welcome to the twenty first century. Angelus is here. You'll see him soon. - You haven't used your muscles in a very long time. It will be a while before you're strong enough to...

Holtz: Just tell me where he is.
