The episode's title, "Supersymmetry," is a reference to a mathematical system in physics by the same name. Supersymmetry is one of the foundations of string theory, which Fred refers to in her research. The term takes on several other meanings throughout the episode, most notably the symmetry of guilt between Fred and Gunn after his decision to kill Professor Seidel for her.
