Brain: And now, Pinky, the advance of technology has brought us an even more powerful tool. Do you know what that is? Pinky: Um...the rubber band? Brain: The workings of your mind are a mystery to me, Pinky. Pinky: Oh, I love a good mystery, Brain!
Brain: Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering? Pinky: Well, I think so, Brain, but if we didn't have ears, we'd look like weasels!
Brain: Oh, the humanity! This famous phrase is from the radio broadcast of the Hinderburg crash in Lyndhurst, NJ, when the radio journalist was at a loss for words at the devastation he was witnessing.
Pinky: Three cameras, Brain? Brain: A technique pioneered by the great Desi Arnez. Desi Arnez (better known as Ricky Ricardo on "I Love Lucy") pioneered the three-camera-setup technique of shooting a television sitcom. It involves one camera shooting the whole set at once, a second camera shooting one character, and a third camera shooting the other character. It revolutionized sitcoms were shot and the technique is still being used to this day.
Brain's Plan: A fake broadcast of an alien invasion.
In this episode, Brain tries to fool people into thinking that an alien invasion is underway by presenting a fake newscast. His plan is clearly inspired by the October 30, 1938 radio adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel War of the Worlds. The broadcast presented on Mercury Theatre On the Air and directed by Orson Welles caused a nationwide panic. It featured a musical program interrupted by realistic newscasts and interviews that told people that aliens have landed and have begun an invasion of the planet. The next day, Orson Welles publicly apologized.
