(Rita and Runt Short) Runt escapes from the pound after having being imprisoned for stealing a bone to eat. He is tracked down by the relentless Camenbert. Rita and a number of other cats are imprisoned by a tavern owner named Tristesse. When Tristesse runs out of meat for his meat pies, he decides to use the imprisoned cats. With the help of some poodles, Runt manages to free Rita and the other cats. All the animals escape, but they are confronted by Camenbert and it is revealed that Camenbert stole the bone. Runt and the rest of the animals manage to escape when Tristesse comes into the pen and collapses the wall on himself and Camenbert. Rita, Runt, and the rest of the animals head off to Paris.moreless
  • This episode is a parody of the musical Les Miserables. Runt portrays the main character (as Runt Val Runt) while Rita portrays a combination of Fontine and Cosette. Unlike the actual musical, this one concludes with a happy ending.moreless

This has to be one of my favorite episodes in the Animaniacs series. As someone who has appreciation for musical theatre, I find this to be one of the most enjoyable episodes. While changing up the songs just enough (probably so they don't have to worry about royalties, etc...) you're still able to tell which songs are being parodied at certain times. Animaniacs has to have been one of the most clever kids shows to ever air, especially as both kids and adults can enjoy the antics of the show. Les Miseranimals is definiteltly a stand out classic proving how great this show is.moreless

    • Cats: Oh help us God, We're living with a Sweeny Todd! Sweeny Todd is a villain appearing in various works of literature, and he is a serial killer. Monsieur Tristesse plans to use the cats in meat pies, so they are comparing the two.

    • Episode Title: Les Miseranimals. This is an allusion to the novel by French novelist Victor Hugo (1802-1885) "Les Misèrables" written in 1862. Among the most well known novels of the 19th century, it follows the lives and interactions of several French characters over a twenty year period in the early 19th century that includes the Napoleonic wars and subsequent decades. The music itself parodies songs from smash-hit musical of the same name, including "Master of the House" ("Bitten in ze Butt"), "Lovely Ladies" ("Lovely Rita") and "Do You Hear the People Sing?" ("Do You Hear the Poodles Bark?").
