  • Look Ma, A Token Gay Character

    8.0
"All In the Family" was one of the first American network . series to look at "the problem" of homosexuality in terms of bigotry, intolerance and unfair discrimination.

In the preceeding decades, most TV shows - news and entertainment based - rarely admitted that LGBT people existed, let alone had valid human rights.

The spin-off series attempts to continue this progressive minded tradition with Archie having to hire an openly gay chef.

This is probably the first time that Archie has had to work with an openly gay man.

If you keep in mind that this episode aired in 1979, the social issue of ***phobia is well handed - much like the show's episodes on racism, sexism and other forms of unfair discrimination.

The main problem is that the character has one more episode, before he leaves the series.

This was a challenge for alot of network TV shows that wanted to deal with the lives of LGBT characters or the problem ***phobia.

It was very rare for a network TV shows in the 1970s - 1980s to have main or secondary character who was LGBT.

Instead, a progressive minded writer would - maybe- have a gay or a transgender character appear in one or a few episodes as a friendly visitor, who needed to go away soon.

In this particular case, the young chef (lawyer in training) volunteers to quit.

It would have been better - in terms of story - had the chef been more then a visitor.

Alas, when the chef tells Archie that the bar owner isnt ready to work with an openly gay may be speaking to the audience.
