jajajaja, this is one of the few episodes i can remember from my childhood, this was very entertaining but the amazing thing with this one, is how they could keep it interesting with the same characters in the same place all of the time, i mean, if you think, this episode was completely done in the middle of the forest, also, it has always the same characters in the tv screen and you never get tired of that, definitively they did a good job with this one.

The first episode so got me and at the beginning, yeah Frank? No duh! It was an amazing story thumbs up. It started when two kids get lost in the woods. Suddenly Flynde shows up. I got kind of suspicious cause he disappeared so quickly. Ah, Dr. Vink is there and got the boys good all right with the riddle. Buzz's shining moment came later but he didn't know the riddle. He was smarter than his brother gives him credit for that's for sure. They leave and OMG, Flynde turning his head was so creepy and same for the hand. Finally Buzz solves it and Frank's in.

I thought this was a pretty good episode of Are You Afraid Of The Dark so I gave it a 9. I would have given it a 10 if it would have scared me, but it didn't. There were some great scenes in it though. My favorite scene would have to be when the Cab Driver turned his head all the way around and said "I sort of died". That was awesome. The riddle was pretty simple. I figured it out before they gave the answer in the episode. Also, the line "Who lives here, the seven dwarves?" was great!
  • Good first episode.

I love this episode of Are You Afraid Of The Dark? It doesn't scare me now, but as a kid, I was so scared. There was some great humor in this episode. I love when Flynn turned around and told the kids he sort of died. Funny, yet scary, too. The riddle was pretty easy for me now, but I remember as a kid it was hard. Loved Dr. Vink in this episode, too. His character was usually pretty good.

I also loved how they introduced Frank into the Midnight Society, even though Gary will always be my favorite.
  • I know this wasn't the pilot, but maybe it shouldn't have been the first to be shown at all.

This episode is one of the most poorly acted, and definitely not creepy of all the episodes I've ever seen. The following episode, "The Tale of Laughing in the Dark" would have been a much better introductory episode for it actually has spooks and chills, decent acting, and a plausible script. So, anyways, two boys are lost in the woods. Their names are Denny (who has potential as an actor, just not shown in this episode) and Buzz (whose acting is abysmal). They come across a dude that takes them to the mysterious Dr. Vink and they cannot answer his riddle so something bad is going to happen to them. Luckily they end up answering it just in time and that's pretty much it. The worst episode of them all. I give it a 6.1 simply because it started the series (if you don't count the actual pilot episode.)
  • Pretty good. I liked this episode.

It was one of the late episodes I saw. But I liked it. Denny and Buzz were pretty cool. I loved their lines. Dr. Vink was pretty weird. But this whole episode is about two brothers lost in the woods and they come across a strange shack with a man who is Dr. Vink. He gives them a riddle to solve. When they can't figure it out...eh you'll have to see. I liked the cab driver. My favorite line for him was "I guess you could say...(turns his head at a full 360 degrees) I sorta died!"

This episode was not as good as i remember it being. Although, it does have some good parts to it. It was a good show opener, with it being the pilot episode it gave some time for the characters to get developed. Nonetheless i give it a 9 outta 10 for it being proably the best pilot epiose out of all 7 seasons.
  • This is the episode that started it all.

This was the first episode of what turned out to be one of the best shows in television history. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the episode. Definately one of the better shows in the series' history.

The episode is about two brothers, one older and tough and one younger and dorky. They end up getting lost in the woods until they encounter an unusual man. He leads them to a weird looking cabin in the middle of the woods. The cabin belongs to Dr Vink, who would end up being a recurring character on the show. Dr. Vink tells the guys that in order to get out of the woods they have to answer some riddles correctly. The younger brother answers the first one with ease but that was just a teaser. Answering the second riddle correctly will give them access to the phone and a way out of the woods. Unfortunately they get it wrong. Dr. Vink tells them to leave and that theyll be a cab waiting for them. They leave and to their surprise there ends up being a cab for them. Theyre overjoyed thinking they can finally leave the woods but are mistaken. The cab is driven by the unusual man they earlier met that led them to Vink's cabin. It turns out hes really dead and the guys will be too unless they answer the riddle correctly before the cab runs into a tree. The younger brother correctly answers the riddle with seconds to spare and they are saved.
  • This was an excellent way to begin this series.

There are a lot of things I love about this episode. It had an okay plot that was executed great. Two brothers lost in the woods and they meet someone who they think is trying to help them. Also it introduced the incredible Dr. Vink. He is also the actor that played Hagrid. I boggled my mind trying to solve the riddle. I felt kinda crazy after I heard the answer. Denny was smart. It was so dramatic when Flynn was about to drive them into the tree, I was on the edge of my seat. As I've said before this was a great way to begin this series.
  • A great way to start the series.

Two brothers, Denny and Buzz, become lost while hiking in the woods and run into a man who says he can help them. The man brings them to a 'doctor's' house and mysteriously vanishes. The only way the doctor will let them use his phone to call his parents is by answering his riddle that has yet to be answered. When they fail to answer it, they leave and run into the phantom cab...

This was an amazing episode to start the series! It had so many twists and turns in it, not to mention some creepy scenes, that I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Not to mention the scene when they're in the cab with the driver... That was a great scene right there. An amazingly well done show and I give it a ten out of ten.
  • A Great Way to Begin the Classic: Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is definitely a classic Nick show. This episode was so unique and a great way to start off the series. Buzz Crocker and his older brother Denny are out hiking together in the woods. Nighttime falls, and Buzz realizes he has been holding the compass to his belt buckle the entire time, creating a false reading of North due to the metal: They are lost. The creepy doctor freaked me out and the riddle was really hard but easy when you think about it. The zombie driving the cab was awesome because I didn't see it coming. I wonder what happened to Dr. Dink or Vink?

This episode was, like most pilots for great shows, excellent. It had pretty good character development considering it is only a half hour show. It actually felt the way it was meant to feel. Scary. The kid actors weren't the best, but were not too horrible. On the other hand, the adut actors were excellent. Most notably Aron Tager as Dr. Vink. He did a good job of making it feel real and absurd, but not too ridiculous. Flynn the cab driver was a pretty creepy character considering they found him just wandering through the woods. A ghost that walks through the forest at night is never good. All in all a great episode, not the best, but not bad.

For the first episode i guess it was ok. It was not scary though, or tense. The acting was real bad, and could have been much better. The only good thing about this episode was trying to work out the answer to the riddle, which was quite hard. So overall it was not too bad,and definately is not a great episode.

This was an okay episode, but was not my favorite. It wasn't very scary at all, and I am a big fan of the scarier episodes. The little brother really annoyed me. We see Dr. Vink for the first time and he'll show up in most if not all of Frank's episodes. It was good though.

This was a very good classic episode of AYAOTD, it introduced Dr. Vink who would later appear in multiple AYAOTD episdodes. "Phantom Cab" was a very good episode of the series. It was also Frank's initation story. This episdoe was not one of the scariest, though it would cause younger viewers a brief scare. Even though it wasn't very scary, it had an excellent and original story. I reccomend that all fans of AYAOTD, find a way to see this episdode. Those who have Limewire may be able to get about two or three episdoes of AYAOTd.
  • This episode is told by Frank as an initiation tale. He gets in(obvisoley). I liked this episode, don't know why. If you look up and past the trees during the night scenes you can clearly see it is actually daytime. I always thought that was really cool.

I really enjoyed this first episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark. It isn't really an original episode in the beginning though I liked the concept of the middle and end. Overall I thought that the boys should have spent more time then they did in the cabin, though overall this was a very good episode and I still enjoy when I watch it today!
