  • John Inman's "Mr. Humphries" charcacter from the british original is reprised in an Australian remake.

When BBC put "Are You Being served?" on hiatis in 1979, this unusual Aussie version went into production. Unlike when American Tv retreads British properties though (like Steptoe & Son became Sanford and Son, and Til Death Do We Part became All in The Family) this was thrown back nearly whole, complete with the lead player, John Inman.

The story was contrived that he's on some sort of inspection of his store's Australian branch. The British version had never been seen by viewers down under, so after explaining why there was a British cast mate, all the other players are little more than slavish impersonations of the originals. They must have been shown some shows and had to "Become" outright copies of Miss Brahms, Mrs. Slocombe, etc. wether they were right for the part or not. For instance, the "Captain Peacock" actor seems far too young and middle class to be so haughty and officious.

Most of the stories were rigidly retreaded scripts, and little energy or character invention is visible throughout. The series ended in one season, and returned to London with it's original cast, without even acknowledging it's brief stop off on the other side of the world. The Australian ones were not rerun, or can they be sold on disc or tape as they would compete with the BBC version. However a few episodes an be found on internet site Utube.moreless
