Are You Being Served is at its best when it's not trying to tell a (complicated) story. Though some episodes are clever farces, the characters don't need story lines to come to life. An episode like this one is basically a collection of sketches. We get at least three wonderful examples of good sketch writing and acting. The scene in Mr Rumbold's office where he gets Captain Peacock's story completely wrong is the humour of misunderstanding. A rather remarkable scene involves Mr Humphries on his own, with no dialogue at all. Humphries plays around with a dummy, accidentally destroys a bra and then covers up the dummy with a long scarf. The pantomime reminds you of a (naughty) Chaplin. The long scene in which Humphries tries to sell a fur coat to a customer and the ensuing fight with Mrs Slocombe makes perfect use of the established characters for great comedy.moreless

    • Mr Rumbold: Mr Grace signed a contract with the Bliss people. We'll just have to grin and bear it. Mr Humphries: I find the two seldom go together.

    • Mr Grace: Good afternoon, Peacock. You've been demoted, I see?

Mr Rumbold: Only a temporary measure, sir.

Mr Grace: Been scribbling on the walls again?

Captain Peacock: That humorous cartoon, sir, was fifteen years ago.

Mr Grace: (to Rumbold) I thought he got your ears very well.

    • Mrs. Slocombe(after he motions to her with his index finger): Captain Peacock, I do not respond to any man's finger.

    • Mrs. Slocombe(after removing her gas mask): My pussy's been gaspin' all night!

    • Mr. Harmon(on Capt. Peacock's entrance in heavy fog gear): Enter the Demon King!

    • The various scents of Bliss perfume that were named in the episode are: Secret Rendezvous, Lady and The Tramp, Gay Divorce, and Butch Cassidy.

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • Mr Humphries: She grabbed me like Mick McManus. Mr Lucas: I didn't know you went out with Mick McManus. Mick McManus was a British professional wrestler known as 'the man you love to hate'.

    • One of the perfumes of the Bliss collection was named, Lady and the Tramp. This is an allusion to the animated 1955 movie starring the voice of Peggy Lee. It is the romantic tale of a sheltered uptown Cocker Spaniel dog and a streetwise downtown Mutt.

    • Mr Harman(to his canister vacuum): C'mon R2-D2.-----refers to Star Wars' round robot.
