When the mechanical Father Christmas proves that it can't be trusted, Mr. Grace offers a bonus for one of the staff to portray the store Santa. Meanwhile, Mr. Humphries and Mr. Lucas attempt to help Mr. Grainger prepare for a song-and-dance show at an old-folks' home.

        The original ending shows Young Mr. Grace selecting Mr. Grainger (who is wearing black greasepaint à la Al Jolson) to play Santa Claus. A black child then gives Grainger a hug. In the edited version, Young Mr. Grace picks Mrs. Slocombe to play Santa, followed by an earlier scene of Slocombe saying "Ho, ho, ho, little boy! Have I got a surprise for you!"
