Arena (1975)

Show Summary

Arena has now become the BBC's longest running Arts TV show. It began in 1975. Launched as a spoiler in October 1975 the same time as a new series of LWT's (London Weekend Television) arts show 'Aquarius'. The famous opening title shot of a bottle floating on the water, and on the bottle the word 'Arena' is seen in a sort of neon light form. The haunting music of Brian eno completes the memorable title sequence. It has aired some famous programes over the years , such as one entiled ' imagine imagine'. This show examined John Lennons famous song, we see Yoko Ono (lennons wife) who is now acknowledged as co-writer of one of the worlds favourite and most famous songs. Also world famous artist Francis bacon, had an episode devoted to him. Arena was and still is the only TV programme that has been granted exclusive access to his estate and all his works since the artists death in 1992 Other high spots have been programes about the song, My way, and one about the famous, Chelsea Hotel .Arena's consistant high quality over the years may be something to do with the fact that it has only had 3 editors since its inception in 1975.moreless
