Armchair Theatre

Show Summary

Welcome to the Armchair Theatre guide at TV.com. Armchair Theatre was an anthology series of one-off plays broadcast by the Independent Television Network. The show began in conservative fashion, broadcasting plays live as they would be seen on stage, but the arrival of Canadian producer Sidney Newman and the commissioning of works by promising young talent ensured that plays made full use of the potential of the new medium. The show is seen as an important influence over later similar programmes such as the BBC's The Wednesday Play. Armchair Theatre included two one-off plays that spawned major British television series: Out of thisWorld (1962) and Callan (1967).
