Armchair Thriller

Show Summary

Armchair Thriller is British television program that ran from 1978 to 1980 in two series on ITV. The series, though not classified as a horror series, included several supernatural elements characteristic of the genre. Twice a week, Armchair Thriller ran in 25-minute episodes. The premise of the show centered on various tales, such as Maria Aitken's appearance in the first series as Jemima Shore in the aptly titled, "Quiet as a Nun." The cliffhanger based on the novel of the same name follows Shore as she revisits the convent where she went to school following the death of one of the nuns only to experience mysterious circumstances. This particular story earned its own spin-off series on ITV and helped Armchair Thriller eventually peak to a high of 17 million watchers per broadcast. Memorable was also the opening credits of the show that showed a shadowy figure walking into an armchair and sitting down, sometimes soaked in blood in trailers for the show. Other popular actors who appeared on the show include Ian McKellen and Denis Lawson.moreless
