The first season finale begins with a slow pan of the camera down over a picnic with "Welcome Family & Friends" written in large lettering on a banner. Amanda went to visit Jeremy at basic training on visiting day. Jeremy can tell she isn't happy and Amanda decides that a relationship with a cadet is not what she wants for her life. She tells Jeremy she doesn't want her mother's life; that she wants a degree and to attain all the plans she had before she fell in love. Jeremy doesn't want to break up but loves her enough to let her go. Before he does he tells her he doesn't know how he'll go on without her.
That same morning Roxy and Trevor are at home preparing for a trip to Macon for Roxy's first visit to meet his parents. The kids are running around and Roxy and Trevor couldn't be happier. Interrupting the happiness is a phone call to Trevor informing him that his deployment was moved up to two days from then. Roxy can't help but look devastated and the family has to cancel their trip.
Claudia Joy then confronts Amanda about all her plans and crazy actions she's taken lately. Amanda isn't too receptive but Claudia Joy now knows she's at least heading to college the next night. After talking things through Amanda reveals the reason she's been acting so out of sorts is because she thinks she may be pregnant. She tells her mom she didn't want to burden Jeremy and that she broke up with him. Amanda still hasn't taken the test, but she asks her mom to stay with her while she does.
Also that morning, Chase allows his kids to give him a shave in the living room. Slyly he tells Pamela that he left the safety covers on so the kids aren't really shaving him. He also tells his family that he's going to be home for a while this time.
In the very next shot we see a pregnancy test with a positive reading. However, when the camera pans up we see that its not Amanda that's pregnant but Joan with the positive test. She looks at herself in the mirror taking a deep breath. The scene then switches back to Amanda and Claudia Joy hugging on a bench by Amanda's window with Claudia Joy telling her daughter how proud she is of her and how happy she is that the pregnancy test was negative. She then asks Amanda, "you've heard of condoms right?"
As Denise gets ready for work Frank gets up from behind the kitchen counter with a large collection of red balloons and roses. He congratulates Denise on receiving her R.N. degree and tells her how proud he is of her. The phone ringing interrupts their celebration and Frank finds out that he too is deploying in two days time. They look at each other for a moment and Denise is clearly upset that she's losing her husband again.
We then see two Army soldiers preparing munitions for training that will be taking place. One of the soldiers discovers a lock that had been broken on a case of munitions. The scene quickly switches to Michael discussing the munitions theft with a number of soldiers, officers and men in suits. After an investigation they discover that grenades, frags, mortar rounds, and explosives were definitely stolen from the munitions depot. Michael also finds out there's reason to believe terrorists were responsible for the theft. As a result, Michaels promotion ceremony is canceled. He is promoted immediately so that all the officers will not be in one place at the same time. Michael orders the base to code FP Con Alpha-Plus.
As this is all taking place Pamela goes back to work at the radio station when she finds out from her boss that the top Army officers aren't too happy with all the sex talk on her radio show. She starts telling her listeners that they can no longer talk about sex, but she's then interrupted by a flier handed to her by her boss. He wants her to announce to the base that they're on alert at FP Con Alpha-Plus. She hesitates, but when she announces the alert, she comforts everyone with a talk about terrorism and the fact that its unexplainable and unpredictable. The only thing Americans can do is trust in the military and live our lives because that's how terrorism is defeated.
That afternoon Roxy and Trevor are playing with the boys in the park on base. As the boys play with a kite Roxy and Trevor lay down next to each other on a white blanket in the middle of the lawn. They discuss the terrorist threat and what FP Con Alpha-Plus means. He slowly leans over and gives Roxy a gentle kiss.
Marilyn and Eddy are walking in a park discussing her divorce from George. She reveals that she hasn't told George she was leaving him yet, but it would be that afternoon. She tells Eddy that she's only ever loved him and she's ready to live her life with him. They decide they'll meet at the Hump Bar after she packs her things.
Roxy, Denise, Claudia Joy, Pamela, and Roland all meet at the Hump Bar at Roland's request. The start discussing how Roxy is feeling now that Trevor is leaving. Betty comes over with more tea but Roxy tells everyone she's not having the surgery because she's $3000 short. Betty refuses to sell the bar because she loves it too much. Roland tells everyone he called them to the bar because he took the job at Northwestern and that he's leaving for Chicago tomorrow. Pamela says, "Can I just say you suck!" They all toast Roland.
The scene flashes to soldiers stopping cars on base and patrolling the streets. Joan then comes home while Roland is finishing up packing some boxers for the movers in the morning. They have an awkward discussion about his plans, and say their goodbyes. Just before Roland is about to leave Joan reveals her pregnancy. Roland is both shocked and happy but Joan tells him that she doesn't want the plans to change, she just wanted to tell him the truth. She doesn't yet know if she is going to keep the baby. After Roland leaves Joan begins to cry.
Michael meets with the officers and men in suits to discuss the information about the terrorists. It turns out the terrorists contacted a soldier who needed cash to steal the munitions. The intelligence tells them the munitions exchange is to occur within 24 hours. Given the information Michael believes the terrorists know about the deployment schedules and decides to move up all the deployments to that night in addition to increasing the threat level to FP Con Bravo.
As Roxy and Trevor are at home with the kids they find out the threat level was increased to FP Con Bravo but that they don't have to stay in doors yet. Pamela arrives to watch the children so Trevor and Roxy don't need to change their plans. Roxy is freaked out by the threat level but Pamela reminds her how important her plans with Trevor are. They both leave, suitcases in hand.
That afternoon George arrives home to Marilyn packing her suitcases in their bedroom. He is very angry. He tells Marilyn he knows about her secret rendezvous with Eddy and that she's embarrassed him in front of his men. In a fit of anger he grabs her by the throat and throws her up against the wall, squeezing his hand tightly around her neck. After moments of staring at her, he lets her go and she runs out of the house. Moments later Marilyn arrives at Roxy's home looking for her but only Pamela and the children are there. She tells Pamela she's leaving her husband but doesn't have a car to go meet Eddy. Pamela looks utterly stunned but lends Marilyn her car to get away. Before she leaves Marilyn turns around and thanks her.
We then see Roxy and Trevor standing on a bridge over a lake. Trevor is dressed in a tuxedo without the bowtie and an open collar. Roxy is dressed in a beautiful wedding gown. They've decided that they would read each other their vows since they didn't get to do it at their wedding ceremony in City Hall. Trevor reads his first telling Roxy that she's the love of his life and that this is what he's coming home to. Just as Roxy begins to read her vows Trevor's cell phone rings. The deployment has been moved up to now. Trevor grabs Roxy's face with both hands, gives her a slow, passionate kiss and they run off together.
The scenes continue with all the main soldier characters receiving phone calls for deployment. First, Chase is about to head home in his SUV when he receives a call and runs off back into an Army building. Then, just as Frank finished preparing a feast for himself and Denise, he gets the call to deploy within the next hour. Denise and Frank walk to the front closet. He hands Denise his Army jacket and he grabs the rest of his stuff. Just before leaving he stops in the doorway to take a quick look around.
Meanwhile, Pamela is reading the children a book in Roxy's living room. Clearly she has no idea that Chase was called back to duty. She calls Chase's cell phone and leaves a message telling him to come back home. We then see Chase running to an SUV with three other men and we find out that he's leaving the country on assignment.
Dressed in fatigues, Trevor speaks to the boys on their front lawn. He asks then to take care of their mom for him and gives them a big hug. He tells then how much he loves them and that he'll be back. Roxy is utterly distraught but leaves the boys with Pamela as she goes to the airfield with Trevor, still wearing her wedding dress.
Flashes of soldiers and family at the airfield litter the screen. Frank and Denise talk about how strange it is not having Jeremy there to see him off. They laugh about the last time she saw him off without Jeremy 19 years ago. In a moment of honesty Frank admits he's worried Denise has changed so much that when he gets back there won't be room for him. Denise tells him she's never loved him more or needed him more; they kiss and exchange sealed letters. Roxy and Trevor are holding hands when Trevor asks her to read her vows. Roxy says the moment she saw him for the first time she knew her life would change forever and that she hopes forever means a very long time. They exchange a long, very passionate kiss and say goodbye. Frank orders everyone on the bus. Frank and Denise exchange one last wave goodbye. Trevor puts his hand on his heart, looking at Roxy and says, "I love you".
Claudia Joy and Amanda are preparing to leave for her train to college when Michael comes in asking her not to leave yet given the terrorist threat. They both convince him she's safe getting on the train for college. Michael starts to well up with the thought of his first daughter going to college. He gives her a hug and tells them both to be careful.
A few moments a later they stop off at the Hump Bar. Claudia Joy is dropping off a check for $3000 so that Betty can get her operation. Amanda stays in the convertible while Claudia Joy gives the check to Betty inside at the bar. Betty has a look of utter amazement and thankfulness when she hands over the check. At that moment Roxy and Denise walk in. Roxy needs to get it together before she comes home to the kids. Roland also arrives seeing all their cars in the parking lot. He tells them all that Joan is pregnant and each of them know how hard his life has just gotten. Marilyn then arrives, running across the bar into the arms of Eddy. At that same moment Amanda watches another car arrives with a soldier in full fatigues and a flak jacket getting out of the driver's seat. It's Marilyn's husband George. He walks a couple feet in the front door of the Hump Bar and removes the jacket. He has a large amount of explosives strapped all over his chest with a trigger in his hand that he extends forward, all the while staring directly at Marilyn. Everyone in the bar is silent starring back at George. Amanda, sensing something was wrong, gets out the car and walks into the bar. As she's standing just a couple feet from George holding the trigger, Claudia Joy is shocked to see her daughter standing right next to the bomb. We start to see flashes to everyone's scared faces, interchanged with flashes to each of the character's recent memories of their loves ones going off to war. And then…George lifts his fingers and brings it down on the trigger. With a white flash the screen goes blank and the episode is over.
