With tears in her eyes, she says, “Trusting you is not the problem, Chase. But, what am I supposed to tell our kids?†Chase suggests telling them he’s away on a mission. Pamela asks for how long " a month? A year? She has to know. Frustrated, angry and hurt, Pamela tells him, “I get this whole Delta Code of Silence crap. So, I thought what kind of officer would I be if I just sat there quietly and let you take a bullet for me.†Roland says nothing for a moment, and then asks Jessica if she would excuse them. He tells her he will see her outside. It is clear Roland is upset at this turn of events. He asks Principal Gates how things were going to go. He wants to know if the principal is going to forget what he just heard or if he was going to ruin Jessica’s future. Principal Gates responds, “This is an Army school. Teachers wrote letters to WestPoint. I lobbied personally. I even had General Holden make a call. I can’t betray the Army by not telling what I know to be the truth. The policy is ‘Don’t ask. Don’t tell.’ And she told. What choice do I have?†Roland asks, “Is she a different person today than she was when these letters were written?†Principal Gates says, “No, but…†Roland interrupts, “But nothing. Is she not just as smart? Just as strong a leader?†Principal Gates tells him that’s not the point. Roland tells him, “That’s EXACTLY the point. She’s in love. That’s…her crime. We don’t choose who we fall in love with. We just do. And now, because of it, she won’t be allowed to serve her country or be willing to die for it.
