  • Ron Howard

    Narrator

    5.8
The world watched as Ron Howard grew up. And Howard responded by landing three distinct monster roles before his 21st birthday. When he was just a teenager, it was said of him, "If Ron Howard never works another day in his life, he will have accomplished more in his life than most household name stars." Ron was born in Oklahoma to Jean Speegle and Rance Howard. Rance was a Drama major at the University of Oklahoma. Jean attended acting school in New York. Ron appeared in Frontier Women at age 18 months, and appeared in Playhouse 90 at age 2. He was introduced as a household name at age 6 when he played the inquisitive Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show. The role proved bigger than the show, as his Opie character was re-cast in the parent show, The Danny Thomas Show, as well as the spin-off Gomer Pyle, USMC. Two years later, at age 8, he was cast as Winthrop Peroo in The Music Man. It remains watched today in video. Maybe the average viewer would have a problem identifying the character Winthrop Peroo. But we all know that the kid brother is "the kid who plays Opie." And the strength of character required to play the Wells Fargo scene - pushing adults out of the way to take center stage mid song, and singing a lively solo out of dialect - ranks up there as one of the greatest casting marvels of all time. Howard was cast as Steve Bolander, and worked with eventual partner Cindy Williams in American Graffiti, the movie that began the nerd glorification movement. A year later, he capstoned that movement, and spearheaded the movement himself, by playing Richie Cunningham for the first seven years of Happy Days. Howard left Happy Days four years before the nerd glorification movement was completed. He turned his attention to Directing, rather than acting. His influence was so profound that fellow Happy Days nerds Anson Williams and Donny Most likewise abandoned acting in favor of directing. We now know that as Richie, Potsie and Ralph encouraged each other to "sit on it," that the "it" was the Director's chair - and all three heeded their advice to success. Among Howard's directing credits were motion pictures, including Parenthood, A Beautiful Mind, and most recently The DaVinci Code. He also lent his voice as the narrator of the sitcom Arrested Development. No matter how comprehensively any written biography on Ron Howard extends, several new chapters are waiting to be written.moreless

  • Henry Winkler

    Barry Zuckerkorn

    6.1

Though he stands small at 5'6", this actor created one of television's biggest characters: as the ultra-cool greaser Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on "Happy Days" (1974-84) he became a pop idol overnight.

Henry Franklin Winkler was born in New York City on October 30, 1945 to Jewish holocaust escapees Harry Irving and Ilse Anna Maria Winkler. This backdrop had a profound influence of his youth. For instance, the synagogue Winkler's family attended was built by holocaust escapees and survivors.

In many ways, Winkler's real relationship with his parents was reflected in his account of Fonzie's relationship with his father. At age 31, when Winkler was diagnosed with dyslexia, he reflected back on his childhood, "...all those arguments, all that disappointment, all that punishment and grounding was for naught." As he addressed the Austin College of 2002, he concluded with, "Thank you for listening to me... my parents never did."

But one element of Winkler that did not carry over to Fonzie was his desire for education. Whereas, Fonzie was a dropout who only later appreciated the importance of finishing High School, Winkler attended New York City's Horace Mann Schools. Later, he received advanced degrees from New England schools such as Emerson College (M.A., Drama), Yale School of Drama (M.F.A.), and again Emerson College (Ph.D., Hebrew Literature).

More recently, Dr. Winkler, with Lin Oliver, started a series of books called "Hank Zipzer". The books are about a boy in fourth grade that has dyslexia. The series includes books with bizarre titles and are mildly autobiographical.

As an actor, he appeared in dozens of commercials before making his screen debut, prophetically enough in the youth gang picture The Lord's of Flatbush (1974). He had a bit part in Crazy Joe (also 1974) before landing the role of "The Fonz." His subsequent attempt to translate TV fame to film stardom with leading roles in Heroes (1977), The One and Only (1978), and Night Shift (1982, directed by his "Happy Days" costar Ron Howard) were only modestly successful.

In 1978, Winkler married child welfare advocate Stacey Weitzman. Weitzman had a 6-year-old son Jed, through whom Winkler learned of his dyslexic condition. For the more Winkler learned of his stepson's condition, the more he saw the very symptoms in himself. In addition to Jed, Winkler and Weitzman have a daughter, Zoe Emily, and a son, Max.

As "Happy Days" wound down, Winkler started directing his energies behind the camera. He coproduced the popular TV series "MacGyver" (1985-92) and the less successful "Mr. Sunshine" (1986), and directed the theatrical features Memories of Me (1988) and Cop and a Half (1993). He returned to acting in the TV movies Absolute Strangers (1991) and The Only Way Out (1993), and took the starring role in the sitcom "Monty" (1994) playing a right-wing talk show host.

  • Patricia Velasquez

    Marta

    9.5
Patricia Velasquez was born in Guajira, Venezuela on January 31, 1971, the fifth of six children. She was raised by her parents, both of whom were educators, in a third world country. Needless to say, Patricia's life was far from luxurious. She attended San Vicente de Paul High School, and after her graduation in 1987, headed for college to study engineering and accounting. Although she was being raised to go into the Venezuelan oil industry (which is basically the only choice for Native American children from Venezuela), a chance event led her to switch plans. A friend of hers wanted to become a model, and one of the pictures she sent to a casting call in Caracas included Patricia. As fate would have it, the agency wanted exotic Patricia. After a year of college studies, she left for Milan in pursuit of a modeling career. In 1998, she strutted down catwalks in ready-to-wear fashion shows for designers such as Antonio Berardi, Bella Freud, Corinne Cobson, Claude Montana and Dolce & Gabana, to name a few. As for print, Patricia appeared in ads for Chanel's Allure, Roberto Verino's Verino fragrance, as well as Victoria's Secret. She even donned swimsuits for Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Edition in 1994 at the age of 23. She has participated in the mother of all beauty pageants, the Miss Venezuela pageant, and can be seen in such movies as The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. Patricia has tried and succeeded in branching out from the stereotype of a model. Besides, she has more noble reasons for her very full schedule. She grew up in a very poor family in Guajira, and promised herself that she would get her family out of that situation. After her first few modeling gigs, she bought her family a new home, made sure her 3 brothers received a college education, and still supports causes such as the advancement of Hispanics, fair treatment of indigenous peoples, and the fight against pediatric AIDS. She also launched a foundation to help Venezuelans.moreless

  • Martin Mull

    Gene Parmesean

    9.1
A classically trained artist, Martin fell into acting by stages. While still a student and struggling artist, Martin began writing songs and performing. First as part of a group called Soop, he performed on one album called In the Soop. Subsequent albums were under his own name, although pianist Ed Wise (who was with MM in the previous group) continued to perform with him. His break into acting came when Norman Lear offered him a role on the soap opera parody Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. After this character was killed off (followed quickly by the assassination of Mary Hartman itself because star Louise Lasser burned herself out), Lear cast him in another parody, Fernwood 2Night, which poked fun at small-town talk shows. This was set in Fernwood, Ohio, the fictional home of Mary Hartman. For the second season, the show was renamed America 2Night. The locale was changed to a small town near Los Angeles so that big stars could appear on the show from time to time. After America 2Night, Martin appeared in numerous movies and had a recurring character on Roseanne. Currently he can be seen as the Principal on Sabrina, the Teenaged Witch. But as far as MM was concerned, this was just a side trip. His real love was, and is, in his painting. If he got some money from his acting or singing/songwriting (one of his songs was covered by Sonic Youth), it was more to buy "more tubes of paint" than anything else.moreless
