  • Michael tries to figure out the truth about Maggie and the baby that maybe is his, and maybe isn't.

    8.4
My favorite doctor returns! The very literal doctor has to give the family the bad news that Buster has to live an all right life because a seal has bitten off his bad hand. Two of my favorite gags in this series are the doctor infuriating the Bluth family every time a family member ends up in the hospital, which happens surprisingly often. My other favorite gag is "Loose Seal", which someone shouts at Buster, who thinks he's hearing "Lucille". Glad to see the Maggie storyline wrapped up because she just annoyed me with her pleas for attention by first trying to be blind, then pregnant. I'm a big fan of the actress, but I just don't think her character brings anything to the table.moreless
  • The episode that got me hooked!

    9.9
This was the first episode I ever saw of Arrested Development (not knowing about it before because of it’s midnight slot and only seeing it after leaving TV on after 11:30 Scrubs) and it got me hooked on the show, in this case literally regarding Buster’s claw.

The whole fat suit-cops-pregnancy plot was very well plotted and a great follow up from the previous episode I saw when I got the DVD. As for Buster’s hand, it oddly came out of a “Next time” scene which are usually false and it is a great storyline, especially the scene with the doctor (all right) and Gob’s seal.

Overall, this is a very entertaining episode and starts Buster’s life without a hand which comes up in many episodes to come.moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • Outside of Maggie's house, Michael tells George Michael "We're like a team. We're like Red McGibon & Bullet". This is a reference to the radio and movie serial that Uncle Jack (from the episode "Ready, Aim, Marry Me") starred in.

    • While they are sitting outside of Maggie's house, Michael makes a call to trace the number that was left on her door. When getting off of the phone, he says "Thank you, Mr. Parmesan". This means that Michael called the family's private detective Gene Parmesan, who appeared in the episode "Amigos".

Also, the "You're Killing Me, Buster" sign was seen in that episode.

    • In typical Hollywood fashion, Maeby's film of Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea has been given the name The Young Man and the Beach.

    • Spoiler alert!:
Michael acts surprised when the gay cops uncover the bundle and find it's not a baby, but he must have known. He snatched the bundle away from Maggie in a way that would have hurt a real baby, plus there's no way the fat suit in the bundle had the weight and consistency of a real baby.

    • Spoiler alert!:
Maggie moves to have the fat case thrown out when Barry lifts up Loretta's shirt, but since she is representing the plaintiff, she should naturally not want the case thrown out, because then her client wouldn't get any money.

    • The two gay cops were previously seen on the episode "Not Without My Daughter", were they both brought their daughters (not seen on screen) to work. It is possible that they had daughters in other relationships, but it doesn't seem that they were written as gay cops back then.

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Narrator: On the next Arrested Development, Buster and Gob find themselves closer than ever.
Doctor: And there you are, we've removed the hook, and there's been no damage.
      Gob: Oh, Thank God.
Doctor: Yeah, he's gonna be fine. But unfortunately, you've still got a hook in your ass.

    • Lucille: How's my son?
Doctor: He's going to be all right.
Lindsay Funke: Finally some good news from this guy.
George Michael Bluth: There's no other way to take that.
Doctor: That's a great attitude. I got to tell you, if I was getting this news, I don't know that I'd take it this well.
Lucille: But you said he was all right.
Doctor: Yes, he's lost his left hand. So he's going to be "all right."
Lucille: [Jumping on the doctor] You son of a bitch! I hate this doctor!

    • Buster: A seal didn't bite your Linus off, right?
Michael: No, a seal didn't bite my Linus off.

    • George Michael: Ann's off with her religious group trying to get Nip/Tuck taken off the air.
      Michael: They don't like Nip/Tuck?
George Michael: Well, you know, they don't like anything. Something about God wants people to age naturally, or I don't know. Ironically, she likes Gangy.

    • Gob: I think I'm responsible for Buster's hand.
Maeby: Yeah, and I'm responsible for an 80 million dollar movie without an ending.
Gob: I know those problems seem big when you're a kid, Maeby.

    • Lucille: I prayed that God take anything He wanted from us so that Buster wouldn't have to go to war.
Michael: Oh Mom. After all these years, God's not going to take a call from you.

    • Maggie: I went to a sperm bank the week before we even met. The father is some guy from Harvard. That's all I know.
Michael: That's great. It's probably some geek Simpsons writer's kid.

    • Car Salesman: Yeah, the Bronco's been discontinued. We're trying to shed that whole fugitive-on-the-run thing. This is the Escape.
George Sr.: What a fun name. May I test drive?

    • (George Sr. & Lucille are in different cars. They almost crash).
      George Sr.: Up yours, granny!
      Lucille: You couldn't handle it!

  • NOTES (3)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Ford salesman: The Bronco's been discontinued. We're trying to shed that whole 'fugitive on the run' thing.
This is a reference to the O.J. Simpson freeway chase in a Bronco just before his arrest.

    • George Michael: Ann's off with her religious group trying to get Nip/Tuck taken off the air.
Nip/Tuck is a show that premiered in 2003 and airs on F/X. The show is very controversial, centering around doctors of plastic surgery.
