Arrested Development

Season 3 Episode 6

The Ocean Walker

Aired Unknown Dec 05, 2005 on Netflix

  • Trivia

    • When Michael asked Rita, "How many houses are in the British Parliament?", she replied seven while the narrator said three was the correct answer. That is actually incorrect as there are two houses in the British parliament: The House of Lords and the House of Commons.

  • Quotes

    • (After Rita has walked on the water)
Michael: Hang on a sec. That's part of your trick, right?
Gob: No, that's not my trick, Michael.
Narrator: On the next Arrested Development ...
      Gob: It's my illusion.

    • George/Larry: Larry, go to a mirror. You're fired.
      Larry: What?
      George/Larry: It's over.
Larry: And this is how you tell me? In the middle of a wedding?!
George/Larry: You shouldn't have said anything.
Larry: You shouldn't have said anything!

    • Trevor: I've got a problem with you having sexual relations with that man.
      Narrator: So do I.

    • George Sr.: Just because a woman gets pregnant doesn't mean you have to marry her. Too many lives have been ruined because some cheap waitress at a HoJo said she used an IUD.
      Lucille It was a Stucky's.
George Sr.: But I believed you.

    • Michael: You've never told me how many houses there are in the British Parliament.
      Rita: Seven.
      Michael: Are there?
      Narrator: The answer is three.
      Michael: Does sound about right.
Narrator: Three is the correct answer.

    • Lucille: Where's your hand?
Buster: I'm having my high school ring put on it. And my hook is stuck in the stair car.

    • Michael: I am getting married.
George Sr.: Who the hell to?
Michael: Who do you think? Rita.
      Lucille: Her?

    • Gob: (performing a card trick) He takes his queen and showers her with diamonds! (pulls a club from the deck) Clubs. Club sauce! He showers her with club sauce. All right, that'll be my line if that happens.

    • Narrator: (about Rita) She was "special," but she wasn't smart.

    • Trevor: It's not your fault your parents were cousins, but here we are. I've been charged with taking care of you, and I'm bloody well going to do it.
Rita: Well, Michael will be my cousin soon enough, 'cause we're getting married!

    • Rita: Is that a magic trick? I love magic.
Gob: I don't appreciate the dry British humor.

    • Michael: You guys got these jackets on inside out?
Rita: Yeah, that way you see the label.
Lindsay: I mean, that's what you're paying for, right? It's a great statement on fashion.

    • Gob: I will not take this sacred duty lightly. I am going to get you the single healthiest call girl that this town has ever seen.
Michael: This is why I'm calling it a witness and not a best man. All you gotta do is watch.
Gob: I'm not going to spend this kind of money and not watch!

    • Michael: It does seem like you've been having a lot of trouble since the hair transplants. Maybe you should see a buboman.
      Tobias: A ... buboman?
Michael: A doctor. It's a British expression, like they say "go up box" instead of "elevator".
Tobias: Oh, yes. Like when they say "poofter" to mean "tourist".

  • Notes

    • In the beginning of the episode, Buster doesn't have his prosthetic hand on. As he's waving with his left arm, a poorly hidden fist can be seen where his stump is supposed to be. Even if his "stump" is pixelized, fingers are clearly visible.

    • This episode won the 2006 Eddie Award for "Best Edited Half-Hour Series for Television".

    • In Gob's card trick, he says "He takes his Queen and showers her with diamonds." Gob, along with his shoddy magician work, have been associated with the queen of diamonds since season 1's "Missing Kitty" episode where he had the Queen and a diamond painted on his chest.

    • When Lindsay suggests Michael ought to get a hotel room with Rita, she does the suggestive wink that we have seen Lucille do so many times. This is immediately followed by Michael's mantra, "Don't do that."

    • When Michael tells his family he's marrying Rita, Lucille says, "Her?" in the same way Michael, Gob, George Sr., etc. would say disapprovingly of George Michael's girlfriend Ann Veal.

    • Rita says "Rita corny, Michael" just like George Sr. said "Daddy horny, Michael" in the episode "Visiting Ours".

    • Originally scheduled to air November 14th but low ratings pushed it to air after sweeps finished.

  • Allusions

    • n/a: Rita laughs when her uncle closes the box with the star in it.
This is an allusion to the film Pretty Woman when Richard Gere closes the jewelry box just as Julia Roberts tries to touch it.

    • The ending where Rita appears to walk on water is reminiscent of the ending to the movie Being There, which starred Peter Sellers as a simpleton who inadvertantly becoming a power player in Washington politics. Like Rita, Seller's character is mistaken as being profound and deep.

    • When Rita says she wants to have sexual relations Michael notes that by calling it that it means she's ready. This calls back to the season 2 episode "Good Grief" where George Michael claims he has pop-pop in the attic and Michael says "the mere fact that you call making love pop-pop means you're not ready."

Also Trevor says the same to Rita when she says she wants to have pop-pop with Michael.

    • Buster dancing to Styx's Mr. Roboto in the staircar was a nod to Tony Hale's dancing inside a car to the same song in an advertisement for Volkswagen.

    • The "ugly" photo of Charlize Theron (Rita) was from her 2003 movie "Monster" in which she played serial killer Aileen Wuornos.
