Dinah "Laurel" Lance=Black Canary...thoughts?
I sure hope so. In episode 03 she showed she can kick ass, so I wouldn't mind seeing her do that in fishnets ![]()
Hard to say but all points are leading that way maybe by the
end of this season Laurel will be The Black Canary.
I have a feeling that it will end up that way with her taking on the Black Canary identity. It would likely not be this season though. Also, because the show is set in a more realistic world without super powers, it is unlikely that she will have the trademark Canary Cry of Black Canary II/Dinah Laurel Lance of the comics. Instead she would have no super powers but only have skills in hand to hand combat like Black Canary I/Dinah Drake. Notably, Black Canary lost her Canary Cry during the Long Bow Hunters storyline which also featured a more violent Oliver who did not go by Green Arrow, much like the series is depicting.
If the show did want to incorporate the Canary Cry, I suppose they could do it by some alternative means. Having something implanted in Dinah's throat or some other device. Though that seems to be venturing into the sci-fi realm too much for the tone of the series.
We have not been told much about Dinah's mother on the show. It would be interesting if she happened to have been a vigilante herself. This would be used to explain Detective Lances hatred of vigilantes, if being one got his wife killed, and would set up for Dinah to take over as Black Canary and follow in her foot steps.
I think it will depend how cartoony this show gets. It seems more likely she will end up in a Chloe/Watchtower/Oracle/Finch kind of role (though probably minus the crazy computer skills) helping from behind the scenes and in the system then her actually going out there and fighting crime herself.
I think that there is a real possibillity of that happening are at least her becoming some variation of the character. i think the oracle/watchtower role is more then likely going to be filled by the Felicity Smoak character as she already seems to be getting used in that way, I could be wrong though.
Oh yeah Smoak, who apparently is a regular on the show. She would make a good WatchTower.
To be honest, I'd absolutely hate for Laurel to end up as Black Canary. IMHO, fanboy nods need to be kept subtle as possible. Her joking about wearing fishnets off-camera & having her work for CNRI is nod enough...& although my inner dog would love to watch a hot chick doing hot superhero things in a hot costume, my upper brain remembers how quickly asinine Smallville became when they started bringing in other costumed superheroes a little more than halfway through the run.
I'd prefer not to relive the pain of weekly facepalming like I did before.
Of course she'll become Black Canary, it's obvious. The question is when and then what will the interpretation of the character be, especially considering they'll want it to be as real as possible. Will she even be able to do a canary cry; might be too unrealistic.
Ok if they want to do this Transition for Laurel to be Black Canary 3 Things have to happen!
1 - Her Father dies and Green Arrow is the culprit!
2 - Introduce a Fallen Drunken EX-Heavyweight Boxer named Ted Grant as her new Father Figure
3 - She finds out Oliver is Green Arrow!
if they do those things right and have Green Arrow have his Great Heroic Fall as the Cities Biggest Evil Vigilante that this new "Big Bad" That is behind the fall of Starling City, and the death of Laurel's Father and pinning it on Oliver then Laurel becomes the Black Canary just to take him Down and starts some Big things for the Show especially the Love/Hate Relationship Between the two and also the fact it makes her become more of the Street Justice Vigilante that was in the comics...it also gives room for if they want to do the Ted Grant/Wildcat angle if they want to ad him...they don't have to do Super-powered people in Arrow but hell if there's no other Street Justice Vigilante's in Starling City like its in Gotham then something is wrong....
Like i said if they do those 3 things then yeah Laurel becoming Black Canary will be actually interesting and also adds a bit more to her Character than her "Self Defense" Classes 1 angle and becoming a ass kicking Street Maiden than can beat up Oliver any day of the week when they already settled on Oliver's Fighting Skill already! Makes no sense to me!
It seems to me that they are planning to introduce the Birds of Prey into the show, which would make sense since they are one of the most popular comics in the DC lineup. The show already has Huntress, who is very similar to the character in the comics. It seems very likely the Dinah Lance will become the Black Canary at some point, though they could throw in a surprise twist and have Dinah Drake (Dinah Lance's mother who will reportedly be introduced into the show in 2013), become the show's Black Canary. After all, in the comics, Dinah Drake is the original Black Canary. My guess is that the Felicity Smoak character will become Oracle. I doubt that they are going to want to introduce Barbara Gordon (who was Batgirl before she was crippled by the Joker) as Oracle since that would almost necessitate bringing in Batman, as well as the Joker and possibly Dick Grayson / Nightwing (the first Robin) who is Barbara Gordon's sometime lover. In my opinion that would be throwing in way too much complication.
Felicity would be brilliant being in charge off Watch Tower.
Strange how her father brought Laurel or Sarah a Canary when they were kids, its in
a photo frame.
I think the writers might be setting up her sister coming back as "Black Canary". Somehow she didn't die and was found and trained for some reason. That, or Laurel becomes "Black Canary" because her sister is being held captured by some evil people. Or, ideally none of this happens.
