The Huntress first appeared in DC Super Stars #17 (Nov/Dec 1977) and was created by Paul Levitz and Joe Staton. She came from the parallel world of Earth-2, where she was the daughter of that world's Batman and Catwoman. After her mother was killed, Batman retired and Helena donned a costume and brought her mother's killer to justice. She later joined the Justice Society of America and was killed during the Crisis. Post-Crisis, the Huntress is Helena Bertinelli (first appearance Huntress #1, April 1989), born in Gotham City into a leading family in the Mafioso. In what came to be known as the Palm Sunday Massacre, Helena's family was assassinated. She fled to Sicily where she received training from her cousin before returning to Gotham. As the Huntress, Helena's extreme vigilantism crossed the line and put her at odds with Batman but he later invited her to join the Justice League to moderate her anger. He later kicked her out when she almost killed someone, but she remains in Gotham and works with the Birds of Prey on occasion. During the 2011 DC reboot, she received a modified origin and is tied to Earth-2. In all incarnations, the Huntress was a skilled martial artist and used a collapsible crossbow with anesthetic darts.
