Betsy: First day of St. Louis on a Mississippi Riverboat. A man named Shoeless Jackson taught me how to play cards. By the end of the day, I'd won a necktie, a bag of peanuts, and a deed to a cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Read 'em and weep, fellas.
Possibly a reference to "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, a member of the infamous 1919 "Black Sox" baseball team, who was banned from baseball for allegedly being part of a conspiracy to fix the result of the World Series, a charge of which he was later acquitted by a grand jury.
