Season 3 Episode 4

Background Blues / And Now Let's Talk to Some Kids

Aired Daily 4:00 PM Oct 12, 1998 on PBS

  • Trivia

    • Look closely: in And Now Let's Talk To Some Kids, the map on the geography quiz Mr. Ratburn gives the kids has the Soviet Union on it! (It's in Asia, where Russia is now.) The Soviet Union broke up in 1991, five years before the show started airing.

  • Quotes

    • Muffy: The Crosswires are too important to be in this public library. We have our own private archives.

  • Notes

    • It's revealed that R4 and 3W are Arthur's great-grandkids as shown in the prologue and epilogue of "Background Blues".

    • On Mr. Ratburn's pedigree chart, his name is given as Emil. He has one sibling--his sister, Rodentia, from "Arthur's Substitute Teacher Trouble". Later episodes give Ratburn's name as Nigel.

    • This is a clever parody of Arthur's own "And Now a Word From Us Kids" interstitials. "Magic Toolbox" sounds a little like "Magic School Bus", but not enough to convince me that it's a reference.
