Episode Summary

So Long, Spanky / Buster's New Friend
"So Long, Spanky"

D.W. is devastated when her pet parakeet, Spanky, dies. She has a funeral for him and doesn't want to replace him with any other pet. Naturally, she's terribly annoyed when a slimy, warty toad starts following her around and getting into Spanky's stuff. She tries to get it to leave for good, but it seems to have other ideas.

"Buster's New Friend"

Arthur is very surprised when Buster doesn't show up to watch Bionic Bunny with him and even more surprised when it turns out that Buster's hanging out with some new friend named Mike. Buster makes Mike sound plenty cool, but Arthur really needs Buster's help with their science project. What's worse is that Arthur keeps asking just who Mike is, but it seems like Buster can only gush about who Mike is, rather than give a straight answer. Arthur begins wonder if Buster isn't his friend anymore.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • During the funeral for Spanky in "So Long, Spanky," Mrs. Read says some words of memory about Spanky and then Baby Kate lays some flowers on Spanky's grave and says "There." However, Baby Kate is not supposed to be able to speak.

(RESPONSE: It's actually just one of Baby Kate's stock gibberish sounds that actually vaguely sounds like "There.")

  • QUOTES (18)

  • NOTES (7)

    • The story "So Long, Spanky" introduces viewers to Toady, D.W.'s new pet frog, who, strangely enough, never appears as her pet again except in title cards. However, later Toady appears in the story "The Great Sock Mystery" --- apparently he got loose again and went wild. Spanky appears in the episode where D.W. makes up a story for the Tibble twins, as Agent B.W.'s pet eagle who dies saving her.

    • When Arthur imagines "Mike," we don't see his face. However, he is about Arthur's age with light tan skin and red hair, and has a voice that's strikingly similar to Arthur's.

    • "Buster's New Friend" is Arthur Chapter Book #23 by the same name.

    • "So Long, Spanky" went through many title changes before it hit the screen. The original title was "Bye Bye, Birdie."

    • Bionic Bunny begins at 4:30 pm, according to Arthur's Bionic Bunny watch. At least, that's what Arthur reads. The display on the watch itself looks more like 1:15.

    • "So Long, Spanky"

Title Card: D.W. Chases After Toady and Pal With a Newspaper
      Card Reader: Francine

      "Buster's New Friend"

Title Card: Buster Roars Like a Lion and Arthur Giggles
      Card Reader: Binky

    • And Now a Word From Us Kids: A group of schoolkids writes letters to D.W. saying that understand what she's going through because they've lost pets too.

    • Arthur: You're Buster's big brother?
Mike: Yeah. It's part of the Big Brother / Big Sister program at the community center.
Buster: My Mom signed me up. She thinks I need older male influences.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a program whose goal is "to provide a mentor to any child who wants or needs one." They are over 100 years old and serve the needs of over 200,000 children.
