Brilliant news: there's somebody else inside DI Drake's (Keeley Hawes) comatose fantasy. So finally, we have a metaphysical mystery to enthral us. Better one series late than never.
And the first five minutes are rip roaring, too. But thereafter the rest of the ep. is pretty "meh": Gene Hunt is present in body, but the genius of the Gene Genie is absent; cut-glass Keeley Hawes continues to eschew the everyman charm of John Simm; the supporting cast barely breaks into two dimensions; and the plot would be laughed out of court by Law & Order. However the new Detective Superintendent "Supermac" (Roger Allam) *is* good value, and, if you're sophisticated, there's fun to be had laughing at a show that features topless dancing while having it female leads denounce stripping as demeaning to women. Or, if you're less sophisticated, you could just oogle at rank titillation and laugh at Chris's striptease. Whatever.
