An episode focused on "Gypsies" could have been one of those "worthy" episodes where "Ashes to Ashes" tries to highlight how appallingly we used to treat people. (Still do, in some quarters.)
But this episode wasn't that at all. This was a smouldering slice of tension and corruption, that had Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes) undermined by nods and winks and silly handshakes until her grip on sanity began to fade, and she was left pathetically begging Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) "to let me in". And with that isolation and vulnerability, I finally felt some sympathy towards her.
At the same time, we viewers were tempted to believe the Gene Genie would sell his integrity to the masons. Of course he didn't. But watching the two strands play out was like watching a phoenix unfurl its wings: the dislocation...the despair...and then the triumphant glory of "Life On Mars" was seen amongst it Ashes.
