Automaniac
One of the most influential achievements in technology to change the social structure of humanity is the automobile.
This series is dedicated to the vast legion of people that love cars, as represented by the host, pro wrestler and self vowed Auto Maniac, Bill Goldberg (my all time FAVOURITE wrestler!). He takes the audience on a ride through some of the greatest types of cars ever to roll off the assembly line.
Typical of the History Channel's style this series does not look at the car in your garage or even the one you grew up riding, it looks are very specific types of cars with extremely daring and dangerous uses. The series covers everything from cars modified for use by gangsters and bootleggers, super fast racing cars, muscle cars and even the cars that where in fatal celebrity accidents.
Bill Goldberg is the perfect choice for the host of this series. His personal car collection is the dream of most men. He has almost two dozen bikes and cars, none of them anything less than classic. More than just a wrestler this man is active in animal rights and even testified before congress for this cause. He has a natural scene of comedy that brings many little lighter moments to the show helping to balance out some of the darker aspects of the series.
Today's culture is practically built around the automobile. From drive through fast food to commuting to work the car is next to a home the most important purchase any of us make in our lives. Here is a series that lets you see the part of history often overlooked about the auto.
The History Channel scores another hit with this and I certainly look forward to every episode. The production values are nothing short of great. The video is clear, the audio booms out of your television. Here they do depart from the usual talking head explanations with vintage footage of the cars and times under discussion.
The pacing is excellent; there is never a dull moment in the episode available for review. Considering that this is being premiered In June when most television series are in reruns, not than many are worth much first time around, do yourself a favour and tune into the History Channel for something fresh, innovative and imaginative.
