  • Once again Avatar scores!

    "Great"
Avatar is like the complete opposite of Dragonball Z. It makes great use of the limited 30 minutes that it is given and it is extremely proficient with it too. This episode was able to effectively cover a number of issues, such as Aang's insecurity about his two friends potentially leaving him in favour of seeing their father, and Sokka's story about being left behind by his tribe. Not sure how Avatar keeps doing this, but whether it's the acting or the great use of emotional expressions, it can make 10 minutes worth of drama into 2 minutes. Not to mention that it was able to include a sweet fight not only between Zuko and Aang, but Appa as well. Although the fight isn't really strategically smart, but it's still aesthetically pleasing.
  • Bato of the Water Tribe

Bato of the Water Tribe was a perfect and awesome episode of Avatar The Last Airbender. I really enjoyed watching this episode because it was full of action, drama, intrigue, and humor. We were introduced to new characters, Bato of the Water Tribe, and a female bounty hunter with a crazy beast with a nose for seeking anything out. I find the interactions between Zuko and Iroh fun to watch. Aang made a very bad decision and jeopordized his relationship with Sokka and Katara who had important decisions of their own to make. I also enjoyed the massive battle scene where Zuko, the bounty hunter and her beast were both after the Avatar. Appa had some awesome moves, and it was cool to see him in action. I look forward to watching the next episode!!!!!!!
  • Katara and Sokka meet their father again!

This time we got Aang and hsi trustworhty companions out flying again, and they decide to stop somewhere and then they stumble across fellow water benders. Wait did I just say trustworthy? How ironic, because this episode is based on trust, and Aang does something not trustworthy by giving a map to some one else (was it a map or something else? Its hard to remember.) Well now the best part is that Katara and Sokka meet their father again, and towards the end of the episode when they are with him thye here a lonely wolf cry and it reminds them of Aang, even though he lied about something people make mistakes and he still is a god friend, so they decide to go back for him. Another cool part about this episode is Zuko and Iroh are shown again, and they meet a female fire bender who has a creature who looks sorta like a giant anteater, and it has the ultimate sense of smell! It can smell anything and figure out which direction it lies to hunt it down!
  • Will Katara and Sokka finally unite with there father?

The Gaang find a stranded water tribe boat and decide to camp there for the night. They get woke up by a friend from the water tribe. His name is Bato. Bato was with Katara's and Sokka's father group but had to get left behind because of an injury. Bato is expecting a message to find out the location of the father. Meanwhile, Aang is feeling left out because they are ignoring him. Aang wanders away from the group and a messenger gives Aang to map to their father. He decides to hide it because he feels neglected. Zuko is tracking down the Gaang from Katara's neckalace and Zuko and Aang have to confront each other again. I gave this episode a ten because I didn't know what was going to happen and it was exciting.
  • See classification: Another great installment!

The action in this episode was great. You got to see two animals fighting each other, a little different touch on the action. You have Aang and Zuko fighting as well, which is the best I've seen from these two in the first season. You get to some of Sokka's intelligence as well, who devises a plan to confuse the Xirxiu, which is blind and attacks by the scent of others. In the end, good prevails, with the Xirxiu temporarily paralyzing June and Zuko.

The episode also showed how selfish Aang could be, when he hid information about Hakoda (Sokka's and Katara's father). In a way, it should how much he cared for them as well, not wanting them to split away from him. However, Aang gets guilty about withholding information, and reveals the news about Hakoda. And although Sokka was outraged, and he and Katara wanted to see their father, they knew in the end they had to go with Aang to the North Pole, because he needed it more.

  • Great episode!

A great episode, with a lot of action, but has a couple of problems. The fight between Aang and Zuko was the best fight they had. They kept firebending and airbending each other into the wall. A great character developement was Jun, Jun is a young girl that doesn't care about anything but money. Her Shirshu was awesome, he took down Appa, Sokka, and Katara easily. Bato was also another great character development, he is a Water Tribe warrior who is brave and is great friends with Sokka and Katara's dad, Hakoda. Overall, this was a great episode with many character devlopements and I give this episode a 9.6.
  • sokka and katara meet an old friend, bato.

i liked episode because sokka and katara see an old friend and that can get them closer to seeing their father. zuko hires a bounty hunter to look for aang by using katara's necklace. the bounty hunter has an animal that can use smell as seeing. they end up meeting and they trick that animal by making different kinds of smells. aang takes back the necklace and gives it to katara. overall i would give it a 9/10. what do i say now? i do not know myself so im just gonna keep talking until i reach 100. i am now done.
  • A great episode, also introduces 2 new characters

Sokka and Katara meet an old friend from the water tribe. Aang gets a little jealous. Iroh and Zuko get a new friend. I think this episode was really cool. It had a really great fighting scene in the end. That's what I like about episodes- good action. It's fine when they have morals, but without action it isn't interesting. Luckily, this goes have great times.Aang also gets a little jealous. He doesn't want Katara and Sokka to leave and go to their father. I guess he doesn't realize what it would feel like for him to see Gyatso again. However, we see that Katara and Sokka did decide to stay with the Avatar, despite not being able to stay with their dad, which was a very wise decision based on their priorities. It seems like it takes very little to give Aang cold feet. He gave up the message after the call called him trustworthy. I'm not saying he did the wrong thing, it's just that if he actually took the risk of hiding the letter, he gave it up too easily. Though, I suppose he wasn't thinking.Still, it was a very good episode.

    "Superb"
After a long journey, Aang starts to feel the seperation from the group, when Bato from the Water tribe shows up, welcoming back signs of home and an eager offer for Katara and Sokka to see their father again. I believe a bit of character development came for the characters especially Aang and Sokka. Aang learning not to hide things from others for his own pleasures, and Sokka learning that one should never be left alone, as he didn't enjoy the feeling himself when his father left for war. I only just wish the speaking fight had been dragged out a bit, it feels quickened and probably was in the time limit of the episode.
  • A Shining Example

    9.9
    "Superb"
This is indeed a shining example of the attention to detail that makes this show great. The fancy footwork during the battle is amazing, not to mention the imagination that goes into a scene like that... the small movements and the give and take are extraordinary. The animation that allows the battles to speak like they do this is unseen by many in the US, until Avatar. Japan has many great animated movies and series that push the envelope, and with Avatar, the US gets to put a great one up there too. As far as Episode 15 goes, I believe of all the Episodes I have seen; this is my absolute favorite. Just goes to show that Aang isn't all about the bending.
  • Not a bad episode, but Aang did learn a valuable lesson.

    9.4
    "Superb"
This wasn't such a bad episode. Aang thinks that Katara and Sokka are going to leave him to go to their father so Aang hides a letter that was sent from their father. This man, Bato is trying to convince Katara and Sokka to go and see their father and stop traveling with Aang. Meanwhile, Zuko is using the necklace that Katara lost to track them down by paying a bouny hunter named June. It was a great episode with an awesome battle scene at the end. It was a really good episode. Aang had a character development because he learned to not lie about things. It was a good episode that taught a valuable lesson. You should watch it.

  • VERY GOOD!!

The group meets up with an old friend from their Water Tribe village named Bato who had been injured and left behind. They head back to his current home in an Abbey of nuns who make perfumes and cures. They spend so much time reminiscing, that they neglect Aang. They suddenly start talking about how Katara and Sokka might be able to visit their father Hakoda, and that a message is arriving soon about their Hakoda's whereabouts. Aang runs off feeling hurt that Katara and Sokka might leave him to go find Hakoda instead of helping him.

While Aang is contemplating their possible departure, a messenger arrives with the news from Hakoda and instead of giving it to them, Aang hides it. Meanwhile, Zuko is busy relaxing with his uncle when a bounty hunter named June storms on his ship, finding a stowaway on board. Zuko hire her to find the Avatar using the scent of Katara's necklace on her Shirshu in exchange for the damages to his ship.

The next day, Bato takes Sokka on a coming-of-age ritual called "ice dodging." Instead of ice, though, they use jagged rocks. With the help from Katara and Aang, they pass the test and all receive a ceremonial mark for their wisdom, bravery and trust. But when Aang receives the mark of trust he can't contain himself any longer and gives the message to Katara and Sokka. A furious Sokka and a disappointed Katara decide to go off to find Hakoda and leave Aang to go to the North Pole on his own. Aang herded Appa back to the beach.

Jun, Iroh and Zuko burst into the abbey, having just missed the others, and continued the trail. The mother superior immediately ran to Aang seeking for his help. Aang realized that Zuko was after his friends.

Soon down their path, Bato, Katara and Sokka hear a wolf cry. Katara suggests that the wolf is hurt, but Bato tells them that the wolf has been separated from its pack. He then explains how he knows this by telling about when he was wounded in battle and left in the Abbey to heal by his fellow Water Warriors, feeling the loneliest he has ever felt. This story reminds Sokka of when Hakoda left to fight the war, and he told Sokka that he couldn't come along and fight with him. Hakoda tells Sokka, "Being a man is knowing where you're needed the most. And for you right now, that's here, protecting your sister." Sokka and Katara realize their mistake and turn around to apologize and travel with Aang.

As they are walking back to find Aang, Zuko, June, and Iroh appear on the Shirshu. They quickly subdue them. June comments that its no wonder Katara left Zuko as she's too pretty for him. A furious Zuko questions them about Aang's whereabouts but they do not know as they were separated. Even though the Avatar is not with Sokka and Katara, the beast finds a new scent, the message that Aang had. They head back to the Abbey as Aang came to the rescue.

Aang battles Zuko among the rooftops, while Appa takes on June and the Shirsu. Aang manages to get Katara's necklace back but is soon trapped by the Shirshu and Zuko.

Meanwhile Sokka and Katara are revived by some perfume given to them by the nuns and suddenly Sokka has an idea. The nuns pour out all their perfumes and Katara starts waterbending them all around. Since the Shirshu can only "see" with its nose, it gets confused and starts lashing at random people. When Zuko and June are paralyzed by the beast, Iroh feigns paralysis to get close to June and holds her in his arms as he lies on the ground. Aang and the others use the opportunity to escape.

Later the kids are flying on Appa. Aang asks what the plan is now. They tell him they're going to get him to the North Pole because he's their family. Aang gives Katara back her necklace. Katara goes over and kisses Aang on the cheek. Aang blushes and tries to hide his face as they all fly off into the sunset.
  • A minor episode that introduces some new characters and develops sub plots.

    9.3
    "Superb"
The plot alone for Bato of the Water Tribe makes this episode excellent. As a stand alone episode much of the plot is developed and characters are further explored. However, what makes this episode truly great are the martial arts fighting sequences. The fighting is up close and personal, and one can tell that the fighting moves used mirror true Kung Fu moves. The part on the well shows just how confident Aang and Zuko are with their fighting ability. This combined with the plot along with seeing Iroh flirt and steal perfume makes this episode watching again and again.

  • This episode is full with action and one of the most adventurous ones. The bounty hunter June and her blind anteater-like creature called Shirsu are together an ultimate team for finding somebody. So Aang and his friend are in serious trouble...

    9.4
    "Superb"
However the title and the main storyline is about Bato, friend and warrior of chief Hakoda, this is just a small part for showing an other choice of Katara and Sokka between their tribe/family and avatar Aang (guess what they chose :). Prince Zuko, as always, wants to capture the avatar and hires a strong bounty hunter who has a nearly as powerful beast as Appa. So there is a duel not only between Aang and Zuko over the lost neclace of Katara, but between the giant pets. Great moments and this anteater rocks! I hope we will see this young mercenary lady in the future (maybe already in the third book?). Not to mention, that Iroh was interested in this wild girl too. :D
  • good episode about friend ship.

    7.7
    "Good"
My favorite part was the battle between Zuko and aang at the end. this was a great episode. We get some insight on katara and sokka's background. I felt bad for aang though in this eppy, when sokka said to get out of the group and go to the northern water tribe on his own. I though katara of all people would stick up for aang but she just went with sokka. The new person jun, that zuko employed to catch aang was pretty cool. i liked her beast that could paralyze something with the touch of it's tounge. Overall it was a pretty good episode, katara finnaly got back her necklace and aang made up for his behavior, improving his relashionship wiht sokka and katara, and there was a kataang moment in the end of the episode for all kataang fans.

When the Gaang runs into Bato, Katara's and Sokka's father's friend, the two young water tribe teens are delighted. Here is a connection to home, their father, their life. But to Aang, this means exclusion, separation, and confusion. Katara, Sokka and Bato trade old stories and news of their friend and father, Hakoda. (?) Aang feels left out, not knowing any of these stories and jokes. When Bato tells Katara and Sokka where they can find their father, they are overjoyed. Stricken and dismayed, Aang leaves the tent. (unnoticed) As he leaves, Sokka begins to tell Bato how it would be great, but they can't. They need to take Aang to the North Pole. Aang doesn't hear this and goes to sulk by Bato's ship, when a messenger arrives with a map to Hakoda. Aang takes it, and hides it in a fit of selfishness. He doesn't want Katara and Sokka to leave him. He believes they would, given the chance. This is the first time we have seen Aang so selfish. Consequently, when his actions are discovered, Katara and Sokka do leave him. Through his own actions, Aang was left behind. However, through Bato's wise council, Sokka and Katara realize what they have done to Aang, and turn around to find him. They realize that abandoning him is about the worst thing they can do. And Aang loves them all the more for it.

  • Not too bad not very well either.

    "Great"
Alright, so in this episode we meet an old Water Tribe friend named Bato, Sokka recount's his last moments with his father, and Zuko tracks Aang with the scent of a necklace and with the help of a punk bounty hunter, souns exciting right? Well, you would think so. This episode did not have the stuff I hoping for, but was still just fine. How about I break down what was good and what was strange:

    Great things

    - Sokka, he was a good asset to this episode and the voice acting by Jack DeSena was great.

-Sokka's flashback to his childhood was really sweet and a little touching

-Iroh having feelings for Jun was really funny

-Zuko and the gang passing all of the places Aang was travelling was cool

-the end battle was one of the best of season 1

    Not so cool things

-All of the cheesy revelations like being seperated from the pack made me gag

-The Animation, it didn't flow smoothly

-This is something that kind of bothers me but probably not anyone else, how people on the show seem to know everything in one second, like Sokka all the sudden knew what happened by just a couple scortch marks and the nun was explaining everything to Aang about people came and attacked the abbey she said " The person was using the scent of a necklace to follow you", who cares as long as Zuko is there I'm coming, then I'll get the necklace when it drops out of his pocket!

So I give you the episode that neither rocks nor sucks.
  • A different kind of ep

    9.4

In this ep a new character is introduced who Sokka and Katar already knew because he is from their tribe. This leaves Aang feeling left out as Katar and Sokka talk more and more about past memmories, their tribe, and wanting to go see their father. However Zuko is also trying to capture the Avatar again this time he is useing something use and a new character to track down the Avatar, which looks like it just might work. Uncle Iroh is also very comical in this ep, even more so then he is normaly, which make this ep even better.
  • this episode is about the gang finding this abby on their travels, and they run into bato of the water tribe, he is from the south and knows katara and sokka, the two completley ignore aang and he feels left out, so he hides a map showing thier father.

    9.6
    "Superb"
this was a great episode. We get some insight on katara and sokka's background. Perosnnaly, i think aang acted rather selfishly when he found the map and hid it, katara and sokka have not seen their dad for a long time and it is understandable that they forgot all about aang in thier excitement to see one of the water tribe. I kinda felt bad for aang though, when sokka said to get out of the group and go to the northern water tribe on his own. I though katara of all people would stick up for aang but she just went with sokka. • It was truly a screwed up ep with a idiotic ending zuko and iroh could of been captured but they all did nothing

    2.6
    "Terrible"
Honestly this ep was a total filler and only for character developement. Too much character developement if yu ask me

Bato comes and goes no point there except to have a 2 day visit gives them a map to their dads location which I'm surprised they didn't go since they lolly gagged throughout the season for aang. sokka shows once again that if yu lie to him yur as good as dead. Katara was actually on sokka's side for once. Recieve a map that doesn't matter since they coincidently meet up with their dad in season 2. Its sad that only sokka got to see him. Have a fight with Zuko

and aang shows that hes gotten alot stronger but didn't use waterbending at all through their fight and of course get kataras necklace back. Then they leave without taking Zuko Iroh and Jun prisoner. Please tell me that they aren't going to keep up the useless filler fights in season 3? I hate it when they just pack up their things and walk away after every fight.

Sokka discovers a boat from Hakoda's fleet along a beach and they find Bato, a member of the Southern Water Tribe who was injured in a battle with some Fire Nation soldiers. He says he is waiting word from Sokka and Katara's father and where he is located. Meanwhile, Zuko and Iroh hire a bounty hunter to find Aang using a special animal with a very keen sense of smell. They find Aang after Sokka and Katara leave with Bato to go find their father. Zuko and Aang have an intense battle. In the end, Aang recovers Katara's necklace and returns it to her and the Gang continues their journey to the North Pole.

This is the first episode of Avatar that I saw and I was very impressed. It was because of this episode, that I saw the other ones. I wasn't happy about what Aang did with the information about the water tribe army, but I was glad he confessed. I was also mad that Katara and Sokka would abandon him like that. I loved the fighting scenes at the end of the episode. I love Prince Zuko and every episode he's in. I'm glad that Katara and Sokka gave up the idea of meeting their father again, and chose to travel with Aang instead.
  • One of the best!

    9.8
    "Superb"
This episode rocked up until the very last second! I loved every moment of this episode because it finally had some, much needed information of not only Bato but the Water Tribe, mainly Bato and Hakota, but this was a major thing for Sokka and Katara because this was the first they have seen someone from their village in some time! Of coarse this made it a good episode but there was one scene that really made it a great episode! That scene was one of the last, it was the fighting scene between Appa, Aang, Jun, Shirshu, and Zuko, The ultimate best part of this episode would have to be when Zuko was fighting Aang and they were on the well, that was so cool! they had so many cool moves and it was just what you should expect from Avatar! This is definitely one of my favorite episodes I have ever seen of Avatar!
  • I didn't really like it.

    "Fair"
I didn't care for this episode. I think its mainly because I had originally missed this one when it was new and saw it after Season 2 was midway. It bored me. I thought it was a little too over-dramatic with Katara and Sokka's reaction. The fight scene didn't do anything for me either. Zuko and Aang just kept doing the same moves on each other, boring. Jun was cool though, and her pet shirshu was awesome. The episode should of had a better fight scene at the end with them using different moves on each other. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that this wasn't my favorite episode.
