Avatar: The Last Airbender

City of Walls and Secrets was a really superb and excellent episode of Avatar The Last Airbender. The gang are now inside Ba Sing Se only to find that every one mysteriously doesn't like to talk about the War, and the revelation as to why is quite disturbing. I thought this episode had a unique twist and made the story very interesting. Meanwhile Jet continues to follow and watch Iroh and Zuko suspecting that they are Fire Nation. It was cool that they now work in a Tea Shop, which is awesome for Iroh. I look forward to watching more episodes!!!!!!!

This episode was constantly delivering on a lot of levels. It's great how the show is using Zuko and Aang as two people going through the same things--kinda--under different perspective. On one side we have Aang who is living in the richest part of Ba Sing Se trying to deliver valuable information to the King, and on the other we have Zuko who wants to restart their life in the slums and have a stalker in Jet trying to expose their identity. In the first half of the episode we are shifted into a world with a structured society and culture and just gives us that new world type of feeling that makes people fans of fictional epics. And in the second half we see what's behind the masks of this brilliant kingdom; a world that is trying to isolate itself from the outside in order to save its own kind. A truly effective episode and possibly one of the better ones out there.

Katara and Toph dress up like members of the fancy, and enter a dinner party hosted by the Earth King. Sokka and Aang also arrive, but they dress up as bus boys. They are caught when Aang uses his airbending to dry a woman after he spills water on her. The member of the Dai Lai (spelling ?) that captures them warns them not to speak of the war inside the city walls. Meanwhile, Iroh and Zuko obtain jobs in a tea shop. Jet follows them, and tries to make Zuko use his fire bending in a fight. Jet is captured, and brainwashed to believe there is no war.

This episode picks up after where the episode "The Drill". I really liked this episode for many reasons. First reason, the premier of one of the great villains, Long Feng. Long Feng is a powerful earthbender who is the leader of the Dai Lee. Another reason why this episode was great because of another premier of a great character. Joo Dee! She always smiles very weirdly. Also, with Toph and Katara dressing up in makeup was very funny, they looked good in the makeup. Zuko and Iroh, on the other hand, had a great story too. The fight between Zuko and Jet was awesome! Overall, I give this episode a 9.5.

Having finally made it into Ba Sing Se, the kids are given a house in the upper ring. The kids are anxious to tell the Earth King their plan, but there are complications. Meanwhile, still convinced that Iroh and Zuko may be Fire Nation, Jet decides to take matters into his own hands and do whatever it takes to get the refugees to reveal their true nature. At the end he gets captured by the Dai Lee and then they brain washed Jet which was a very mean thing to do. I liked the episoode since it gave us a lot of info about ba sing se.

As a reward for protecting Ba Sing Se from the Fire Nation attack, Aang, Katara, Sokka and Toph are allowed into the city and given a house in the inner ring. While the others are optimistic about having reached the city, Toph is none too thrilled- apparently she has been in Ba Sing Se before, and did not find it to her liking. Soon after they arrive, Aang and his friends are met by Joo Dee, a woman assigned to guide them around the city. Attempts by Sokka to try and get their guide to talk about the war and a possible audience with the Earth King are invariably ignored. As they see the many sections of Ba Sing Se, the kids soon find the segregation of rich and poor people is not to their liking. Aang recalls that this may be the reason why he didn't visit the city in the years before his being trapped in the iceberg. When a possible audience with the Earth King is finally mentioned, it is revealed that they will have to wait at least a month. It soon becomes apparent that within the walls of the city, no one wants to talk or even think about the war raging in the rest of the world. Even Aang's attempts to find Appa bears no fruit as no one seems willing to divulge any information to them, thanks to some meaningful glances from Joo Dee. Meanwhile, Zuko and Iroh have found jobs in a tea house, where the former Fire Nation general soon becomes popular for his superior tea brews. Unknown to the two, Jet the freedom fighter is constantly watching them and waiting for either one to show signs of firebending. When a notice arrives of a party being held in the palace, Katara decides its a good way to reach the Earth King. Toph says that since the gang are mostly commoners, they'd be spotted right away if they went to the event. In the end, Toph and Katara dress up in formal attire and head for the palace as Aang and Sokka wait. The girls are initially refused entry by a guard, who rejects even Toph's family seal. They eventually get inside by tagging along with an official named Long Feng. Aang and Sokka arrive at the palace themselves and enter the side entrance as servants. All of the kids are soon discovered by Joo Dee, who appears very frightened that they have defied the orders and entered the palace. Aang is soon exposed as the Avatar and a commotion erupts. Sokka, Katara, Toph and Momo are soon gathered gently but forcefully by the guards. Aang himself is confronted by Long Feng, and taken to a room where the others are waiting. Jet, getting impatient with waiting, finally charges into the tea restaurant where Iroh and Zuko are working. He accuses the two newcomers as Firebenders, but is met only by skepticism by the tea shop patrons. Angered, Jet draws his swords. Zuko draws his own double blades and the two start a prolonged duel. Despite taunts from Jet, Zuko holds his own without using his firebending. Zuko finally disarms Jet at the cost of one of his blades. Guards arrive at the scene and take Jet into custody. Smellerbee and Longshot watch as their friend and leader is taken away. Later, in a darkened room, a captive Jet appears to be subjected to a form of brainwashing. Inside Long Feng's chamber, Aang and the rest try to talk about the coming Solar Eclipse, but are abruptly cut off by Feng. To preserve the culture and utopian life within the walls of Ba Sing Se, no mention of the war is permitted. It is also revealed that Feng, the Earth King's secretariat, is in charge of handling day-to-day affairs in the city, including all military matters. The King himself is no more than a figurehead, a beloved icon. When Aang threatens to talk and tell everyone about the war, Feng threatens them with expulsion from the city. He then goes on to say that if Aang persists, he may never see the missing Appa ever again. As they are dismissed, Long Feng calls in Joo Dee to accompany them. Aang stares in disbelief as they all realize that a different woman has taken the place of Joo Dee

A lot of things could be said about Ba Sing Se. Its size, its elegance, but most of all its secercy. Nominated and winning an Emmy, this episode deserves some reconigtion. Overall I consider it a kind of intro episode into the world and workings of the city of Ba Sing Se and less an episode with full meaning. It could be argued that it gets its point across when Joo De returns to the Avatar and his friends but it is not Joo De. She says she is, but the kids know she isn't. They may be young, even somewhat naive, but they are not blind. Much of the episode is like this. The city wants you to believe what it tells you. Wants it to be the truth. But the people know it isn't. Some just don't know. Others yield to believing because of fear. A very interesting episode at most.

City of Walls and Secret is a very special episode, a side reflection of what happened in old China, and Morden China as well. Endless controlling in the city has made Ba Sing Se a mind prison. A so-called orderly Utopia, was actually fully controlled by the Dai Li and their leader Long Feng. Numerous brain-washed slaves called themself Joo Dee helped to maintain the order of the world's biggest city.

Aang and the rest of the gang asked many places for the missing bison and no one had provided even a bit information under the influence of Joo Dee.

Meanwhile Zuko became angry about Jet's provoke, a fight was break out, and Jet was taken away and brain washed by the Dai Li, the supposely culture defender of the city were actually a group of well trained scoundrel.

I don't like it too much. But the episode gives the inforamation about Ba Sing Se. And I agree with the Toph's argument that Ba Sing Se In Chapter 17 is the worst city ever. Btw, the episode explain about everything within the walls of Ba Sing Se. And that is very useful for us to understanding the next chapters. I think The Gang's problem doesn't finish, but become more complicated. Just a few days live in Ba Sing Se, they have to face the Dai Li and Long Feng. And this is the root of problems!! From this point, the Gang has new enemy. Meanwhile, Jet has been arrested by the Dai Li. Poor Jet.

I found some interesting characters in this episode. ex: a family who went to Ba Sing Se through the Serpent's Pass with the Gang. They met with Zuko and Iroh. Then Iroh said "What a handsome baby"! But the baby is a GIRL. Then I found another one. In one scene in front of Tea Shop, the street crowded by people. And I see a man among the people. A man who trying to rob Iroh in Chapter 15 The Tales of Ba Sing Se.

I don't know why, but the idea of such an orderly society in Ba Sing Se appealed to me. Having everyone know where they go and all that has been tried in our world, and it worked. Still, nobody was happy with it. Esprcially those who were not in it. When you see something that looks bad from the outside, you never really see whats they are trying to do until you go into the inside. The middle class of Ba Sing Se could go around without worrying about the lower class muggers and criminals that we learned about in a leter episode. But enough with all that, thats another story.

I liked this episode a lot. We first see them as the approach the beautiful station, and then meet the rather creepy Joo Dee. Then they are taken to their house, which, rather plain, is in the upper ring of the city. Then they go out exploring, and realize that the city is really well controlled, and at the time they think that it is the earth king making sure everything is in its place. Then they find out that Long Feng and the Dai Li are running the city, making sure that everything is watched over.

Still, they go from honored guests to the most watched people in the city, just by trying to inform the earth king of the eclipse. That didn't really go so well, so they now have a bigger problem.

Riding the Earth rail, the group finally enters Ba Sing Se. Sokka is confident that they will easily find Appa, but the city is bigger than they imagined... much bigger. Soon after they arrive, Aang and his friends are met by Joo Dee, a cheerful, incessantly-smiling woman assigned to guide them around the city. Attempts by Sokka to try and get their guide to talk about the war and a possible audience with the Earth King are invariably ignored.



Ba Sing Se seems to have as many walls inside the city as it does outside. It becomes readily apparent that class segregation is very real in Ba Sing Se. As they see the many sections of Ba Sing Se, the kids soon find the segregation of rich and poor people disturbing. Aang recalls that this may be the reason why he didn't visit the city in the years before his being trapped in the iceberg.

Meanwhile, Iroh and Zuko are beginning new lives inside Ba Sing Se, working in a Tea House. A short distance away, Jet is becoming increasingly determined to expose them as Firebenders, much to the dismay of Smellerbee and Longshot, who see disturbing similarities to the Jet of before.

When a possible audience with the Earth King is finally mentioned, it is revealed that they will have to wait at least a month. It soon becomes apparent that within the walls of the city, no one wants to talk or even think about the war raging in the rest of the world. Even Aang's attempts to find Appa bears no fruit as no one seems willing to divulge any information to them, thanks to some meaningful glances from Joo Dee. Along the way they also see members of the Dai Li - elite guards who safeguard Ba Sing Se's culture and society.



Meanwhile, Zuko and Iroh's new jobs are coming along smoothly, where the former Fire Nation general soon becomes popular for his superior tea brews. Jet continues to watch them for signs of Firebending, but even Iroh is being careful to do things normally.

Aang and Sokka eventually arrive at the palace and manage to get in through the side entrance disguised as servants. All of the kids are soon discovered by Joo Dee, who appears very frightened that they have defied the orders and entered the palace. Aang is soon exposed as the Avatar, but he quickly smooths things over with a display of his abilities to entertain the audience, until the Earth King himself arrives. Sokka is captured and dragged away by Dai Li guards as the Dai Li bind and gag Katara and Toph with earthbending. Aang himself is confronted by Long Feng, who reveals himself to be the Grand Secretariat of the Earth King and head of the Dai Li. Aang is then led to a room where the others are waiting.

Jet getting impatient with waiting, finally charges into the tea restaurant where Iroh and Zuko are working. He accuses the two newcomers as Firebenders, but is met only by skepticism by the tea shop patrons. Angered, Jet draws his Hook swords and threatens Iroh. Zuko, witnessing the threat to his Uncle, grabs a pair of swords from two guards patronizing the teahouse, with intentions of protecting him. Despite taunts from Jet, Zuko holds his own without using his Firebending. Zuko finally disarms Jet at the cost of one of his blades. Guards arrive at the scene and take Jet into custody. Smellerbee and Longshot watch as their friend and leader is taken away. Later, after being presumably taken to Long Feng's secret prison located under Lake Laogai, a Dai Li officer begins to brainwash him into believing that the city is safe and peaceful.



Inside Long Feng's chamber, Sokka tries to talk about the coming solar eclipse, but is abruptly cut off by Feng. Ba Sing Se,the great capital of the aerth kingdom is just a lie...The dai li remember me the cia or the scret sevice that control the goverment.They da that they want, the people is controled by the dai li and one of the thing that give me creep was JOO DEE omy god she look like a machine,a robat ,a clone something to perfect to be true.it just a lie the city is controlled and they manipulate the king.How the gang will save Ba Sing Se if the dai li are everywhere and dthey follow them in all place they go.The words part is that is you try to say something abaut the war they will do something very creepy and terrible to your brain.in general the epi give me creeps

doo dee scares me, but this was a great episode, i can sense a side plot coming on with jet and zuko, i think now that jet was brainwashed, he can be useful to the dai lee to get dirt on the gang. I just know that longfeng has appa somewhere hidden in the city. I think the dai lee are really evil because they are trying to keep appa away form teh gang. When jet loses his patince and attacks zuko in the tea shop, they have a sweet sword fight. It's nice ot see some of the stuff you see in old movies, since your used to bending fights all the time. I can tell the gang is going to have a wonderful time in ba sing se.

This is one of those episodes where the first time you watch it you jump up and down in excitement thinking "What the heck is going on?!" Every other time you watch it, its still great. The plot in this epsidoe is excellent, as we are first introduced to the conspiracy that rules Ba Sing Se. Long Feng is an interesting character, and the Dai Li are certainly entertaining to watch. Jet's reapperance is great and his fight with Zuko may be one of the most anticipated fights of the season, and it delivers! Broad swords vs. twin hook swords, can't get much better than that! Toph all dressed up was so cute too. The whole conspiracy plot is awsome and Joo Dee (well...Joo Dees) is...crazy, awsome crazy. And Jet's brainwashing, wow, puts so much into the plot. A great epsiode to watch over and over again! I love this one!

I love this episode. Maybe this time Aang didn't fight, but Zuko did, eventhough I felt bad for Jet being taken away. He really isn't a bad guy, just a little obsessed. Momo always makes me laugh, him trying to be royalty. I'm just quite surprised that Aang and his gang aren't more forceful in trying to see the Earth King. I mean, he is the Avatar. The Fire Nation almost made it through the wall with their drill, if it wasn't for the Avatar, they would of made it through. You would think the King would want to meet with him to say thanks atleast.

Joo dee is so stinking funny she reminds me of a robot.I shall now laugh *laughs* ok i am done oh toph looked so pretty and so did katara.The animals are so so cute.I hope they find appa i hope i hope.I loved this epi or did i already say that i can not remeber.I so think kataang is going some where just look at how aang looked at katara and no one say he was looking at toph he does not like toph and i do not think Toph likes Aang.i have no clue what to say any more so

i swear when i saw the end of this my mouth was wide open! what a freakin creepy city! first off that joo dee lady was just plain scary the way she smiled all the time. and every one was afraid of her! it was funny how she ignored sokka though. i loved the part with the bear, platapus bear, skunk bear, no just a bear! toph was a little annoying in this episode but she had a point. poor aang he cant kick the dai lee's but cuz they have appa! this is so agravating! zuko was funny in this one, he felt stupid in his uniform, he was acctually really cute in it! irohs didnt fit! poor him! i loved the part when zuko said he was sick of tea, 'sick of tea?!?! thats like being sick of breathing'. i almost pooed in my pants, it was so funny! iroh also changed his beard... it looks horrible! ha ha ha his tea was made with looove ;) he bought flowers for a lady friend... i like zuko with katara, but i'll try to keep an open mind... maybe :) anyway, the party was a ok part, when aang blushed we didnt see for who... but im starting to think the creaters might be messing with us, the only person who has ever had any thing happen was sokka. but they looked like porclin dolls so i didnt really like it, but it was nice to see their hair different, and sokka and aang looked cute in their outfits. the fight bettween jet nd zuko was so great! it was fantastic! 'you want a show i'll give you a show!' the part where zuko balanced on the table was bloody briliant! zuko is now even hotter! but it pissed me off to no end when they interuped to fight to go to some boring ole party!!!!! oh they for fighting and i didnt know who to feel more sorry for while they were fighting, jet cuz even though he has a screw lose, he was right, and just poor zuko. they seemed pretty evenly matched though, oh how i wish they hadnt enterupted the fight! once jet was arrested i felt so bad for him, i wanted him out, and then they did the unthinkable and BRAINWASHED HIM!!! those Crazy Mother F***ers! poor jet! poor zuko! poor aang! oooooo this is so horrible i just might cry!!! hopfully aang kicks some dai lee but anyway!

Meanwhile, Zuko and Iroh have found jobs in a tea house, where the former Fire Nation general soon becomes popular for his superior tea brews. Unknown to the two, Jet the freedom fighter is constantly watching them and waiting for either one to show signs of firebending.

The kids are given a house in the upper ring. The kids are exited to tell the Earth King their plan. Meanwhile Jet decides to take matters into his own hands and do whatever it takes to get the refugees to reveal Zuko's and Iroh's true nature. This episode had a lot of action and it was very cool because Aang and that gaang wanted to tell the king about the war plans that they have but at the same time Jet tries to tell the Whole City that Zuko and Iroh are firebenders. My favorite part of this episode was when Jet starts to fight Zuko and when Aang, Katara, Sokka and Toph start to think that Joo Dee is an unusual person. I hope that you liked this episode very much and that this was one of your favorite episodes.

I wasn't expecting the Earth Kingdom capital to be more frightening, in its way, than the Fire Nation. Joo Dee and Long Feng and the Dai Li all became so important.



It was interesting, and unexpected, and over this and the last episode, we've been reminded that Jet is a tad overzealous, but his ideals are solid.



This was interesting, and some of the themes of Ba Sing Se were concepts that I wouldn't normally attribute to a children's show--the idea of Safety vs. Freedom, of the "good guys" being potentially as morally dubious as anyone. The Ba Sing Se story arc is mostly one of my favorite stretches of the series thus far.

In this episode the gang finally get into Ba Sing Se, As does Zuko. The gang are welcomed by Joo-Dee, a strange women. She takes them on a tour of the city showing them the Lower ring, the middle and the upper. She leaves them at their new house in the upper ring and teels them to wait for dinner to come. The gang, Wanting to see the king, gets a letter saying that the king will be throwing a birthday party for his bear and that the king will be there. The gang decides to sneak in. Meanwhile, Jet keeps stalking Zuko and Iroh and then loses patcience and attacks them.

Well, this episode started off as a pretty normal episode in comparison to what it became, with the gang going on their course, and zuko and iroh on the other part of the story. From the moment that the gang meets their "guide" to Ba Sing Sei, you know there's something up. Meanwhile, Jet is trying to find a way to reveal that Zuko and Iroh are fire nation, resulting in a very impressive sword fight between jet and zuko, with jet being arrested and, very surprisingly in this "magnificent" city, brainwashed!

Aang is still searching for Appa, but in the process is trying to deliver info about the eclipse, where the fire nation will be at its weakest. This is easier said than done, as everyone of high status is too afraid of speaking of this war, as it is against the rules of the capital city, and they will suffer consequences, and im guessing they would be the same or worse as what happened to Jet. We find out that in an effort to keep the culture of Ba Sing Sei, and keep it the only remaining city of its kind in the world, the people are kept out of knowledge of the war. The city is divided into classes, which greatly disturbs Aang, as there is much suffering and violence in this "Utopia". The real person in control works for the King, but in reality, the King is his puppet. The episode ends with the gang being assigned a new guide, and if they disobey the rules, they will be expelled...but for some reason, the whole brainwashed look of the people is creepy

All in all, this is truly the creepiest and most socially unbalanced episode. Jet suffers because he is trying to help, as does Aang. The big question is that if the people of Ba Sing Sei will not really help in the war, who else is there? A very chilling episode because of the cruelty of the leaders, but an amazing episode nonetheless, and i cant wait for next weeks episode!

Anyway... Aang and hi friends finally ariive to Ba Sing Se where a lady named Jun Dee arrives and gives them a tour of the city. They first go to the poorer areas... and then the restaurant and business areas and then the rich people area. They want to meet the king but Jun dee told them it will take a month. So Aang goes around asking people about Appa but Jun Dee escourts them and shakes her head at everyone Aang asks and they seem to know nothing. They plan on going to a formal party of the king's so they sneak in. They get caught and they are all brought into a room... this is where it gets creepy... the guy tells them that no one in Ba Sing Se knows about the far and it should remain that way so that Ba Sing Se will be the only peaceful utopia left. Zuko and his uncle get jobs as waiters in a teas house. Jet still follows them and continues to look for proof that Zuko and his uncle are fire benders. He gets impatient and attacks them in the tea house... hoping Zuko and his uncle would use fire bending to defend themselves. The cops arrive and arrest Jet because Zuko and his uncle did not use firebending. They were hypnotizing Jet into thinking that there is no war and stuff... This by far is the creepyest avatar episode...

This episode totally kicked butt and showed what an Avatar episode is trully capable of...

I loved this episode, it had everything: humor, action, drama, excitement and valuable information about the show's future at the end. This episode was very weird, but in a good way, Joo Dee added to this ominous feeling. I loved the beginning when they entered the inner wall and became fascinated with the city. I loved learning about the order and how Ba Sing Se works. This episode lives up to its name in that there are many secrets yet to reveal, especially at the end which gives you a very speculative and hopeful feeling, a conflict arises that you wonder how it will be solved. Good stuff, good stuff. Also the Jet and Zuko sword fight pwned! And the Dai Li are totally awsome!!
