  • The Avatar State

The Avatar State was a perfect and very entertaining episode of Avatar The Last Airbender. I really enjoyed watching this episode as we are introduced to Azula, who is Zuko's sister. She has seemingly good news for them. It was cool to see her Firebending skills. I thought it interesting how ruthless she is, just like Fire. I thought the Earth Kingdom was neat and The General became a little crazy trying to force Aang into the Avatar State. There was some cool scenery and action scenes. I enjoyed all the surprises and the end of this episode see's Zuko and Iroh acknowledge that they are on their own. I look forward to the next episode!!!!!!!

  • Second one had a great ending, and season two has a good beginning.

For a cartoon that has a continuing storyline, Avatar took people by storm with its witty dialogue and surprisingly fantastic writing. It hardly skips a beat with the second season, and it shows immediately in its first episode. Aang's heroics over at the North Pole caught the attention of the Earth Kingdom and his Avatar state has started to become a coveted tool. It was actually pretty neat how the episode explored this issue and establishing it to the masses that forcing Aang into going into the Avatar state isn't the way to get. Nicely executed. What was also pretty neat is that it's putting a bigger emphasis on Zuko and Iroh being fugitives of the Fire Nation, ultimately transforming Zuko from the antagonist to the anti hero. Two storylines that were executed well makes for a very good watch.
  • Aang is forced by an Earth Bending General to learn how to fight in the Avatar State...

This episode was pretty awesome. After the battle at the North Pole, Aang discovers that everyone has learned of his magnificent feats while using the Avatar State. He is forced by an Earth Bending General to try to learn how to go into the Avatar State willingly so they can win the war immediately. Aang refuses to do so, and is threatened by the General. The General uses Earthbending to trap Katara in rock. Every time Aang refuses to go into the State, the General sinks Katara lower into the ground. Aang becomes furious, and goes into the Avatar State. He starts destroying everyone and everything in sight until Katara is released. Meanwhile, Zuko runs into his little sister, Azula, who was commanded by her father to arrest Zuko and Iroh. They escape, however, and become outcasts.
  • We begin the famous book two! This episode was a good starting episode for book two!!

I don't know what it was about her, but from this episode on (for book two and maybe book three) Katara appeared ot gain a more attractive appearance, and looked hotter! She was pretty hot in book one, but when book two was started, I'm just saying that something was added to her and she was made to look prettier at the start of a new book (aka season.) What is also truly amazing about this book is that (at least i know to me and perhaps many other people) had some of the most exciting and epic episodes, and had the greatest looking animation I've ever seen in them. We are also introduced to another hot girl, a blind earthbender who first is known as the blind bandit when Aang first sees her. But then her real name is discovered which is Toph. Toph wants to venture out with Aang and his friends after wanting to get away form her family, so now we got a new character added to the force! She now takes part in the rest of Aang's adventures. Well, in this episode, a high ranked earth bending officer wants to completely destroy all fire bender opposition, and tries to get Aang into his Avatar State to do that. At the end though, it clearly doesn't work out, and Aang doesn't want to do that as it is very dangerous. Still a good epsiode with some funny parts though! Next up is Cave of Two Lovers!
  • The first episode of the second season does not disappoint!

    "Superb"
This is a great start to the second season. Aang meets General Fong on his way to Omashu. Fong wants Aang to strike the Fire Nation now, and for him to control the Avatar State. Everyday he doesn't, more people die.

The action is good, but I thought they could have done better with the Zuko and Azula fight. What's really interesting and keeps you watching is the plot this episode.

It reveals an insane general who will do anything to stop the deaths of his men, and that means attacking Aang to put him in the Avatar State and threatening his friends. Aang realizes it's too difficult and too risky to force himself into the Avatar State, so the plans to attack the Fire Nation are ruined, even though he knows more people will die everyday.

This episode also introduces Azula, Zuko's sister. She is a ruthless character, a perfectionist, and a very powerful Firebender. Zuko's encounter with Azula is done well, and shows how hopeful Zuko can get to return home, not as an outcast, but as a son returning to his place as the prince of the Fire Nation. This shows when he takes the word of someone he mistrusts, Azula, over someone who has trained him and given him good adivce, his uncle, Hiro.
  • Great episode.

A very special episode in many different ways. The most special about this episode is the premeir of my favorite character, Princess Azula. She is very powerful, she can lightning bend, she has great defensive moves, and can even beat Aang! The fight between her fighting Zuko wasn't much of a fight, Azula only did one blow. If Iroh didn't go with Zuko, Zuko would be dead because of Azula. Aang and the General fighting was pretty good too. With the flashbacks seeing Aang in the Avatar State. The whole episode was great, even that Zuko fighting Azula wasn't much of a fight. I give the first Season 2 episode of Avatar, a 9.6.

After their victory at the North Pole, The gang heard to Omashu, but stop at General Fong's post to get an escort.

Fong tells the kids that he heard of Aang's victory at the North Pole, and that with the Avatar State, Aang is ready to fight the fire lord.

Aang goes along with it for awhile but after having another dream, decides against it, Fong then puts Katara in danger in hopes of trigging the Avatar State it works.

While in the Avatar State, Roku summons Aang to the spirit world and tells them more about the avatar state, it shocks Aang to find out that if he is killed in the Avatar State, the avatar will cease to exist, and the cycle will be broken.

Great way to start season 2, a bit more of the avatar state is revealed, and we see how desperate some people want the war to end including putting other peoples lives in danger.

The season opens when Aang has a dream that he is in the "Avatar State," but is outside his body and witnessing it first hand which frightens him. He wakes up, on a Northern Water Tribe boat that is heading for the Earth Kingdom. Aang, Katara, and Sokka leave the rest on the boat and set off for Omashu to learn Earthbending from King Bumi. Meanwhile, Zuko is growing steadily more upset as the three year mark of his banishment draws nearer. Iroh tries to console him to no avail. Iroh says, "Why would he banish you if he didn't care?" Meanwhile Azula, Zuko's sister, is shown speaking to the crew of her ship, instructing them to be prepared to fight members of the royal family or face her wrath. She is also hostile to the captain of her ship when he tries to tell her that the tides will not allow her ship to dock. Aang and the gang meet Fong, an Earth Kingdom general, who believes Aang is wasting time learning bending and should just try to trigger his Avatar Spirit and go after the Fire Nation. Aang feels so guilty over the casualties of the war he agrees. First, they try using a stimulant tea whose effects on on Aang are more equivalent to a sugar-rush. Next, Sokka tries to scare him into the Avatar State. Lastly, they try mixing the four elements together but it ended up into mud which Aang sneezed on everyone. Meanwhile, Azula is shown practicing advanced Firebending techniques and is annoyed when she fails to achieve perfection. These techniques involve lightning. Shortly after this, she arrives and presents Zuko with an interesting prospect. Azula claims that their father regrets his banishment and wants him home, for there was rebellion heating against the Fire Lord and she claims that he needs family whom he can trust around him. In the meantime, Aang realizes that he should not try to trigger his Avatar State. Hoping that Fong would understand, Aang confronts him, but Fong foolishly tries to trigger the Avatar State by ordering his troops to attack Aang. When that fails, Fong uses his Earthbending to bury Katara. This enrages Aang, who falls under the Avatar State. Fong tries to explains that he had faked Katara's death in order for him to get into the Avatar State. However, Aang uses a powerful wave of Earthbending to defeat Fong and his troops. Aang is subdued only when Avatar Roku communicates to Aang during the battle. Briefly taking Aang into the spirit world, Roku explains that the Avatar State empowers the Avatar with the skills and knowledge of all his past lives. While in the Avatar State, Aang is at his most powerful, but he is also very vulnerable. Should an Avatar die while in this state, Roku warns, the Avatar Cycle dies with it and the Avatar will cease to exist. With the explanation completed, Roku returns Aang to his body. Having regained his senses, Aang sees the damage that he has caused and feels ashamed. General Fong, on the other hand, is overjoyed that Aang entered the Avatar State and suggests that they begin finding a way to control the Avatar State. Sokka knocks Fong out before Fong can think of any more ideas and the group decide to proceed to Omashu without an escort. Meanwhile, as Iroh and Zuko are about to board Azula's ship, her captain inadvertently reveals that the two are considered prisoners. A fight ensues between Iroh and Zuko and Azula and her men, with Iroh absorbing and transferring the lightning bolt Azula was about to use against her brother. Zuko and Iroh escape to the nearby forest. Knowing that it was but a lie and the Fire Lord wants nothing to do with either of them, Iroh and Zuko cut off their top-knots, forsaking their homeland.

Steadily, the obscure images come into focus. Aang is at the Southern Air Temple where he finds his own self-looking at the skeleton of Monk Gyatso, the guardian who cared for Aang 100 years ago. The 'other Aang' turns around and glares with his eyes and tattoos glowing from being in the Avatar State. Suddenly they are outside, and a powerful sphere of energy surrounds the 'other Aang'. Katara and Sokka are watching from behind the rocks, when the other Aang releases the energy and blows everyone away. The winds from his avatar self blow Aang into the Fire Temple on the crescent-shaped island previously visited in Episode 8. Aang watches as the door opens to reveal his other self once more in the Avatar State. The Avatar lashes out and the floor splits open beneath Aang. He lands on a Fire Navy ship in the North Pole when the Ocean Spirit faces him with the water encasing his avatar form. With a slice from the Ocean Spirit and his Avatar self, Aang springs awake. After he catches his breath, Aang makes his way up the ladder. Katara awakens by the sound and follows suit. She follows him to the deck of the Water Nation boat and asks Aang if he wants to talk about it. Aang tells her no, saying it was just a nightmare. He continues to tell her how he was in the Avatar State, but he was outside his body watching himself. "It was scary. I was scary." She comfortingly puts her hand on his shoulder. The next day, the three travelers are given gifts from Master Pakku. Katara receives an icicle-shaped amulet filled with sacred water from the oasis, and is capped with a crescent-shaped lid. Aang is given a box of scrolls that will help him in his waterbending training. Lastly, Sokka comes up beaming, expecting similar gifts, but instead he receives a pat on the shoulder and told to take care of everyone. Afterwards, Master Pakku instructs them to head east to the Earth Kingdom Base where General Fong will provide them escorts to King Bumi in Omashu. There, Aang will be safe and able to learn earthbending. As the three travelers (and Momo!) take off on Appa, Katara shouts back to Master Pakku to "say 'Hi' to Gran Gran!" for her. Pink cherry blossoms fall lightly on a town located on top of a river, where Uncle Iroh receives a well-deserved massage after "three weeks without food and water and sea vultures ready to pick out their liver." Zuko is sitting down and leaning against the wall while wearing a 'China Man's' hat. Uncle Iroh comes up to him and says, "It's the anniversary, isn't it?" "Three years ago today I was banished. I lost it all. I want it back. I want the Avatar; I want my honor, my throne." Zuko concludes sentimentally, "I want my father, not to think I'm worthless."

At this, Uncle Iroh attempts to cheer Zuko up by saying that why would his father banish him if he didn't care, but Zuko stands up and walks off. Iroh glances towards the masseurs and mutters that that came out wrong.

And now, a new character enters the Avatar story. We see a large Fire Nation ship and on it two long rows of soldiers bowing down, facing each other. The door opens and four men carry out a covered sedan chair. Two of them pull back the front curtain and an attractive girl in Fire Nation apparel steps out. She motions for the soldiers to rise, and narrates on how her brother and uncle have disgraced the Fire Lord and brought shame to all of them. "You may have mixed feelings about attacking members of the royal family, I understand. But I assure you, if you hesitate, I will not hesitate to bring you down. Dismissed." As the soldiers depart, the captain comes down and reports to Princess Azula that the tides will not allow them to dock before nightfall. She acts obtuse and asks him to explain. Then she asks him, "Do the tides command this ship?" At first the captain does not understand, but Azula makes her point quite clearly in her next few words. All you need to know is that when Princess Azula's eyes are set on the goal, it doesn't matter if she has to throw a few men overboard. Meanwhile, Appa soars through the sky and Sokka points out the Earth Kingdom Base. A circular stonewall surrounds it with a pagoda in the center. When they land, they are greeted by General Fong and his group of about 20 men, who address them with respectful titles. Fireworks then burst into the sky from green capsules shot by Earthbender soldiers. In a dimly lit room at the top of the pagoda, General Fong divulges his knowledge about the Northern Water Tribe attack and how Aang single-handedly took out the Fire Navy fleet. His point is that he believes Aang is ready to face the Fire Lord. Aang has this flabbergasted look on his face and Katara backs him up by saying that Aang still has to master all four elements. General Fong persists, saying that with Aang's powers to wipe out hundreds of battleships in minutes, he can defeat the Fire Lord now. Sokka interrupts saying that Aang can only do that when he's in the Avatar State. General Fong says he's well aware that Aang's eyes and tattoos glow and when he is in that state, he possesses unbelievable power. He continues, saying that with that power leading the way, as the "ultimate weapon", the Earth Kingdom soldiers could go straight to the heart of the Fire Nation. Aang hesitates, saying that he doesn't know how to get in or out of the Avatar State, and General Fong quickly says; "It's decided then. I'll help you figure out how to get into the Avatar State and then you'll face your destiny." At this Katara counters back, saying that they already have a plan. Aang will face his destiny his own way. General Fong says that while they take their time learning the elements, the war goes on. Aang is brought to a window and General Fong shows him the wounded soldiers returning from the infirmary. "Those are the lucky ones. They came back. People are dying, Aang. You could end it. Now." Nearing sunset on the Fire Nation ship, Azula trains on the deck while two identical old ladies with their gray hair in buns scrutinize her movements. She shoots a beam of lightning into the open air and one of the ladies says, "Almost perfect." While the other lady states "One hair out of place." A crazed look enters Azula's eyes as she glares at the misplaced hair and says, "Almost isn't good enough," and pushes the hair back. (Such a perfectionist). She does the lightning attack once more and Iroh wakes up in the place he and his nephew are staying at. It is dark at the Base, and Aang tells General Fong that he's in -- that he'll fight the Fire Lord in the Avatar State. He returns to bed and tells Katara and Sokka. Katara strongly disagrees that this is not the right way, but Sokka reminds her of how incredible Aang was when he took out the Fire Navy. She argues that the right way takes practice and discipline, but Sokka counters with "Or, he could glow it up and stomp that Fire Lord!" Katara shouts that if they want to throw away everything they've worked for then fine, and exits the bedroom angrily. Aang calls after her that they don't have time to do things the right way, but to no avail. The next day Aang goes through several tasks, all of which don't succeed. He is given this rare chi-enhancing tea that is supposed to increase his strength ten-fold, but instead it increases his energy and chattering. "I guess he could talk the Fire Lord to death…" Sokka mutters. For the second task Sokka tries to shock Aang into the Avatar State. Katara covers Aang's eyes with her hands and when she moves he sees Sokka with Momo's head screeching at him. Although it scares Aang, he doesn't turn glowy. Sokka ends up losing balance and falls to the side. The third task is a ceremony. Aang is wearing a ceremonial piece of clothing from each of the bending nations, including an Earth Kingdom hat and a Water Tribe robe. An old man mixes the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air into a bowl and splashes it onto Aang, who says it's just mud. "…Well, do you feel anything?" The old man asks. A moment of silence impends until Aang ends up sneezing, and the mud splatters all over Katara, Sokka, and General Fong. "We have to find a way." He says. Back at the tranquil village, Uncle Iroh drops his bag and shells pour out onto the wooden table. He picks some of them up saying how he'll enjoy them for years to come, but Zuko scolds him because they have to carry everything themselves now. Across the room Azula's voice is heard greeting them. The two turn around and Zuko asks her what she is doing here. She walks toward them, saying how 'in her country'; pleasant hellos are exchanged before asking questions. "Have you become uncivilized so soon, Zuzu?" She asks, and Zuko yells to not call him that. Uncle Iroh enters the conversation in a more respectful tone, but she crushes one of his shells, saying it must be a family trait to get straight to the point. She tells them that she came with a message from home. There are rumors of plans to overthrow their father, and that family is the only ones you can really trust. The mood changes when she says, "Father regrets your banishment. He wants you home."

At this unexpected news, Zuko's expression softens and he looks out of the window, deep within his thoughts. But Azula is impatient for an answer and when Uncle Iroh tells her that Zuko simply needs a moment, she snaps at him. She continues to prod Zuko for an answer, but sees that he needs more time. She tells him that she'll come back for them tomorrow. Aang and Katara are gazing out at the mountains at the sunset, leaning against the parapet. Katara asks if he remembers when he saw Gyatso's dead corpse at the Air temple. How traumatic it must have been for him, and how she saw him get so upset that he wasn't even himself anymore. "I'm not saying that the Avatar State doesn't have incredible - and helpful - power, but for the people who love you, watching you be in that much rage and pain is really scary." At these words, Aang thanks her, but still continues to go on with the training for the good of the people, who die every day. "I'm already a hundred years late. Defeating the Fire Lord is the only way to stop this war. I have to try it!" Katara resigns and tells Aang that she won't be coming to watch the next day. It is nighttime at the village, and Zuko is ecstatic and packing his stuff for the next day. But his blissful mood makes him blind to Iroh's advice, "I think it may not be for the reasons you imagine. In our family, things are not always what they seem." Zuko bursts out in rage and calls his uncle a lazy, mistrustful, shallow old man who's always been jealous of his brother. In order not to increase Zuko's ire, Uncle Iroh says no more. Back at the Base, Aang's dream continues. This time, he sees himself in the water typhoon shown in Episode 2. Aang is knocked overboard by his avatar self and the avatar turns and glares at Zuko. A look of fear enters Zuko's eyes, and he attempts to escape when his avatar self slashes out at him, causing Aang to spring awake. He then wakes up Sokka and tells him that he doesn't want to bring on the avatar state, and asks if he thinks the General will be mad. Sokka says, "What can the General say? You're the avatar; who knows better than you." But Aang still looks a little unsure. Cherry blossoms fall gently on the stone steps as Zuko descends the next day. He sees the ship in the port and Uncle calls down to him to not leave without him. Zuko has this joyful look on his face (don't see that often) when he hears his uncle's call. "Family sticks together, right?" Uncle places a hand on Zuko's shoulder and a memory of his father doing the exact same thing while they look out over the hill enters his mind. (The same memory shown in Episode 12) "We're finally going home," Zuko says and gazes down at the ship once more along with his uncle. But as Zuko continues down the steps Iroh looks at the ship suspiciously. At the Earth Kingdom Base, Aang tells General Fong that he has decided not to go through with the tasks anymore. The benevolent face of General Fong looks disappointed and asks him once more if he is certain. Aang tells him that the only way that he can only reach the Avatar State when he's in genuine danger. General Fong says he was afraid of this, and Aang is completely taken by surprise when he sends his desk flying into Aang who is sent out of the top of the pagoda. Aang airbends to soften his fall and rolls out of the desk's path just before it crashes to the ground. General Fong then gives the order for his soldiers to attack the Avatar. Aang looks around at the gathering soldiers in disbelief, when General Fong jumps out of the pagoda and uses earthbending to land safely. Aang asks him what he's doing, and he says, "We're about to get results." Desperately, Aang dodges giant coin-shaped stones (the ones with the square hole in the middle) that are sent at him from every direction. Sokka is being held captive in the pagoda by two soldiers, but kicks back with his heels to force the men to drop and release him. Meanwhile, Aang air scooters and dodges stones and earthen walls jutting out of the ground. He scooters up the wall surrounding the city, but two Earth soldiers riding ostriches pursue. As the air ball runs out he continues running up the wall, but the two soldiers swing their weapons ahead of him and he back flips onto the ground once more. He dodges their attack again and runs across the field where a stone coin rises up around him and he's pulled in front of General Fong. The general yells to him that he can't run forever, and Aang shouts back that he can't fight forever. At the port, sentries filed in two lines meet Zuko and Iroh. They walk in between the still sentries, Iroh gazing warily from one guard to another. The two stop before the ship and respectfully bow when Azula welcomes them. The captain asks her if they are ready to depart, and Azula sweetly says, "Set our course for home." At the word "home," Zuko repeats it reminiscently. Azula's plan would have gone perfectly had it not been for the captain who orders the men to take the "prisoners" home. After a moment of silence and a death glare to the captain from Azula, Iroh leaps at the soldiers, sending one guard after another into the water. "You lied to me!" Zuko shouts to Azula in rage, and he battles his way up onto the deck of the ship. As Aang continues to dodge the giant stones sent at him, Katara lies in her room when she hears the ominous shuddering. Wanting to make sure Aang is okay; she gets on her feet and exits. When she reaches the bottom of the outside stairs, she meets up with Sokka and he tells her what's going on. Together, they enter the fight. Sokka manages to mount onto an ostrich. Katara uses the water from her gourd, but ends up being surrounded by the giant stones. It's her against General Fong. She sends a stream of water towards Fong, but is countered by dirt rising from the ground, which turns into mud instantaneously. Ruthlessly, General Fong sinks Katara's feet into the ground. This action makes Aang throw air at the General, but he evades it by sending up an earthen wall. Sokka attempts to rescue his sister, but General Fong sinks the ostrich's feet and he is sent flying off and into the square hole of the coin. By now, Katara has sunk almost halfway into the ground and Aang is begging the General to let her go. He remains implacable and says to Aang that if he were in the Avatar State, he could save her. Tears stream out of Aang's eyes as he says he's trying. Now only Katara's head is above the ground, and Aang is on his knees shouting that the General doesn't have to do this. "Apparently, I do." He says, and Katara is completely sinks into the earth. Aang attempts to grab her before she sinks, but he is too late. His whole body shakes uncontrollably and when Aang turns around, his eyes and tattoos are glowing and a look of hatred and rage shows clearly on his face. The general grins with delight and triumph that it worked, but his expression changes when he is sent flying into the wall. At the port, Zuko is successful on reaching the deck. He kicks out both ways, sending the two guards overboard. He steps towards Azula and dagger-like flames appear behind his fists. On the dock, Iroh is fighting more of the guards and sending each of them into the water. He looks toward the ship and shouts, "Zuko! Let's go!" before continuing to fight. On deck, Zuko sends a flurry of firebending slashes at Azula, who dodges each attack easily with that smirk on her face. To add salt to the wound, Azula tells Zuko that their father blames Iroh for the loss at the North Pole, and that he believes Zuko to be a "miserable failure for not finding the Avatar. Why would he want you back home, except to lock you up where you can no longer embarrass him." She grins maliciously, and enraged Zuko persists in his offensive slashes. Azula continues to dodge his attacks, and scratches his forehead with her long nails. They battle up the steps until Azula decides to stop toying with him and grabs his wrist. They look at each other; Azula with her confident grin, and Zuko wondering what her next move will be. Rapidly, she sends a stream of blue flame out of her fingertips that sends Zuko flying onto the bottom deck. Zuko hazily looks up at Azula, who is generating a deadly lightning attack. But before Azula finishes can finish her brother off, Iroh absorbs the bolt and directs it into a cliff. He throws her overboard and he and Zuko run far away from the boat. A dirt tornado surrounds Aang and General Fong calls out to him, explaining that it was all at trick to trigger his avatar state. Katara is brought out of the earth, breathing heavily and Aang descends down, sending a powerful earth force that obliterates the area. Suddenly his spirit separates from his body and rises into the sky where Avatar Roku picks him up on his dragon. "It is time you learned," Avatar Roku states. The two are taken among the yellow clouds and Avatar Roku explains to Aang the purpose of the Avatar State: it is a defense mechanism, designed to empower him with the skills and knowledge of all the past Avatars. "At the Avatar State, you are at your most powerful." When he explains the glow, four images are shown: one of Kyoshi levitating gargantuan statues; another showing a Waterbender sending a tidal wave; a third showing an Airbender directing wind powerfully against grass and trees; and a fourth showing a Firebender sending magma flying out of volcanoes. "But, you are also at your most vulnerable."

Reincarnations of his former self are shown among the clouds. The previous avatars then line up and one by one disappear. Avatar Roku explains that if Aang is killed in the Avatar State, the reincarnation cycle will be broken and the Avatar will cease to exist. So now Aang understands the importance and caution he must take when he is in the Avatar State. His spirit descends down into his body that is surrounded by an air shield, and Aang gazes shamefully at the devastation he has caused. Katara runs to Aang and comforts him and he apologizes to Katara, hoping that she will never see him like that ever again. But General Fong comes up at that moment, and tells Aang that his avatar state was almost perfect and that they just need to find a way to control it (can you believe him?). In his fervor, General Fong doesn't notice Sokka riding on an ostrich and knocking him unconscious from behind. Sokka asks if the other soldiers have a problem with that, and they quickly shake their head no. The three are ready to depart for Omashu. In the tranquil village, Azula holds up a wanted poster with the faces of Zuko and Iroh and warns the villagers that if anyone were to harbor these traitors, they would face the Fire Lord's wrath. Between the sakura trees, Zuko and Iroh still run onwards until they reach a glade. Here they kneel down to rest by the river. Solemnly, Zuko takes out a knife engraved with symbols on the blade and waits a moment, before cutting his hair. With that one cut, he has thrown away his honor, his throne; everything that he had been fighting for in the past since his banishment. He passes the knife to Uncle who understands as well. Both drop their cut hair into the river and the two stand together in the glade: two outcasts, two refugees.

The Avatar State is a good episode. It was written by Aaron Ehasz, Tim Hedrick, John'O Bryan, and Elizabeth Welch Ehasz. Aang has to learn how to cintrol the avatar state, and some siko idiot named General Fong is trying to force Aang into it. At the end, General Fong tries to force Aang into the Avatar State by nearly killing Katara, who he has a crush on. This caused Aang to go into the avatar state and destroy everything. And before General Fong dies, he saves Katara. Aang destroys everything, and after that, Avatar Roku talks to Aang. He explains that the Avatar State is something that can be used to defend yourself, and it has all of the powers of all of the past avatars including Avatar Roku and Avatar Kyoshi. Avatar Roku also told Aang that in the avatar state, even though it is really super powerful, it is also when you are at your most vonerable. Avatar Roku says these exact words: "If you are killed in the avatar state, the reincarnation will end, and the avatar will sease to exsist..." Aang was put back into his human body, and he realized the damage and distruction he did. Why did he have to do it? We will find out in later episodes...
  • I loved this episode. it showed how much aang loves katara when she is threatened, because he only goes into the avatar state when someone he loves is thretened.

this was a pretty good episode. I just wonder if aang will ever get control of the Avatar State. this episode shows how much aang loves katara when he goes into the avatar state when she is threatened. and we all know he only goes into thr avatar state when someone he loves is threatened. I nearly fell of my chair when i was watching it. It had everything I liked. I especially liked the kataang moment when katara rushes to aang and hugs him.(sooo cute!!). i also liked the funny bits. such as when aang drank the chi inhansing tea. soo funny. i give it a 10/10.

The beginning of Season 2 kicks off with aang and his friends out at sea getting ready to depart for The earth kingdom city of Omashu. First thought they have to go to a smaller earth kingdom to get transported off to Omashu. Meanwhile Zuko and Iroh are off relaxing in a near by town in a massage place. It appears that it is the aniversory of zuko getting banished from the firenation and he clearly states he wants to catch the avatar to regain his honor and his rightful place on the throne. Eventually aang and his friends arrive at the earth kingdom and they meat one of the earth kingdoms generals. He immediatly wants to get into battle at the firenation with aang in the avatar state to finally win the war. Though aang having nightmares about the avatar state doesnt want to go back there ever again. Plus aang hasnt mastered all of the elements yet. In the mean time zuko and iroh get confronted by zukos sister azula with good news. It "appears" that zukos father wants him and iroh back home and zuko decides to come with her and so does iroh. Aang eventually gets persuaded to fight the fire lord and learn how to get in and out of the avatar state. Trying many things that didnt work the earth kingdom general started to get annoyed and tried to scare and make aang mad to go in the avatar state and it worked though aang not being able to control himself in the avatar state almost destroyed the whole kingdom. He eventually wears off and they are on there way. Near the end of the episode zuko and iroh are bourding azulas ship to go home. One of azulas guard slippes up and reveales that they are taking zuko and iroh back home as prisoners they immedialty go into battle. With Iroh against azulas guards and winning and zuko against azula almost gets killed by azulas new bending move of lightning. Though just in time when azula tries to kill zuko iroh comes and absorbs the lightning shock and shoots it away from zuko and throws azula off her ship. zuko and iroh immediatly make there escape and stop running by a river and kneal down to cut off there ponytails to show there disloyalty to the firenation and the first episode of the second season ends as zukos and irohs ponytail floating down the river and shows that they are no longer loyal to the fire nation. This takes a big turning point on the show for now.

Great way to start off the second season...this is the biggest display of earthbending we have seen up to this point...the bending scenes are great in this episode too... there is not to much humor in this episode... but the excitement with the running away and the bending make up for it. This episode keeps your attention the whole time but there is a few things that caught my paticular attention.... such as there was more mud splattered than was on aang...it didn't seem katara's bending improved too much but according to paku she is master katara but we all know katara is a great water bender which is demonstrated in each of the finales.... she just seemed helpless.... the first time aang earthbends but he's in the avatar state.... and another thing aang's lesson about the avatar state was a good theme to play on because it became issue later on

Aang, Katara, Sokka, and of course appa and momo departe from master paku and the other watebenders who are on there way to the south pole, Aang is off to an earth kingdom bast to be directed to omashu. He gets a warm welcome, but then suddenly the gerneral decides he is ready to face the firelord now, but just simply going into the avatar state. He shows aang the people who have gotten injured and hurt from the war and excliams that he could stop all this. Katara refuses saying that there is a rigth way to do this, but aaang excepts. when various attemps to get aang into the avatar state fail, they start to attack him!, aang runs, and is able to manuever all the attacks, but when the general turns his attack on katara ( who aang loves) he cant stand it, the general traps her underground, and Aang gets furios, and goes into the avatar state. He destroys everything, and also roku's spirit comes, and gives aang a little talk about the avatar state, and what will happen if he is killed in it. when aang calms down katara is freed, and sokka comes up, and sokka knocks out the general, they leave, aqnd continue there way to omashu. During all this Zuko was tricked into thinking his fater wants him home by his demon sister Azula. He goes down to Azula's ship, along with Iroh who suspects Azula is up to something. when one of the commanders on azula's ship acidently calls Iroh and Zuko Prisoners, the fight is on. Iroh immediatly starts attacking while Zuko goes after Azula. he is fighting fiercely, while Azula is barely trying. Soon Azula starts to fight, and shoots a fireball at him. She charges up her lightning (an advanced firebending move) but before she can shoot it, Iroh grabs her and redirectsit into the mountains, and he kicks Azula off the ship into the water. Iroh and Zuko make a run for it. and when they think they got far anough, they sit and cu off there ponytails (which is a sign of firenation) they are now fugatives from the fire nation

The classification of this episode could not be more correct. We see character traits revealed in Aang, Zuko, Iroh and Azula. In Aang, we see how much he values friendship, particularly his friendship with Katara. When the crazy Earth Kingdom general sinks Katara into the ground, Aang is beyond control. The general gets what he wants, and a little more. Not only is Aang in the Avatar state, but he is out for revenge - on the general. In Zuko, we see just how naive and unsuspicious he is when it comes to hearing exactly what he wants to hear; that his father has accepted him again. he is ready to believe that his father, the one that threw him out of the country for speaking out of turn, has suddenly turned apologetic and forgiving. Iroh, however, knows exactly what his brother Ozai is up to. Feigning exuberance for Zuko, he accompanies his naive nephew with a suspicious eye on Azula. many a time we have seen Iroh sit back and let the others do the fighting and squabling ("The Waterbending Scroll" for instance)but when it comes to the one he loves as his own son (as revealed in "Seige of the North") he has fire in his heart and in his hands, as he takes out a full royal guard. Azula is revealed to be the epitamy of a loyal Firenation citizen. Ruthless, backstabbing and deceitful, she easily lures the suseptable Zuko right up her ship's plank, and perhaps would have been able to keep him if not for her blundering captain and Iroh's ferocity. Azula is clearly her father's daughter.

I had waited oh-so long for this one. Since December 1, 2005 at 9:01 PM to be exact. Overall, it fulfilled most of my wants, but left me hanging and wanting more.

You wanna hear what I wrote in my diary the next day?

"Happy new season of Avatar! Azula (not Zula. Crap!) rocks! And dang it Kataang! But I liked the eppie."

Looking back, I was kinda an idiot. First off, Azula most certainly DOES NOT rock, she's a freakin b---. A scary b---. But that was my last-year-rabid-fangirl self. Now, I'm obsessed with better things. coughcoughdavyjonescoughcough. But I wasn't an idiot when cursing Kataang. Little did I know, the next episode would stab me in the heart. It was a good way to kick off the season. There isn't much left hanging on the gAang's side, but you're in suspense now with Zuzu and Iroh. Oh, wait, hold on *rabid fangirls on nick.com "ZOMGS Zuko cut off hiz hairr!!!!!!1one"* Kay, they're gone.

Honestly, you knew Azula was lying to Zuko from the start. I was almost yellling at the screen, "What's your promblem? Of COURSE she lied to you! She's a b---!" All in all, a pretty good episode. Left me a bit unfulfilled, but the next few episodes certainly make up for it.

This ep occurs maybe a few months after the send of s1, the seassons have changed and Katara and Sokka have new outfits. In this ep we learn a lot about the Avatar State, what it does and what dangers it can pose, as Aang struggles to use it to fight with. We all see what has become of Iroh and Zuko and meet a new evil character, Azula, who happends to be Zuko's little sister and who happens has something in mind for Iroh and Zuko. Azula's character is developed in this ep, and we learn what a threat she can pose.

The Avatar State was the beginning of the second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Avatar fans were expecting this greatly anticipated episode to be phenomenal, and it was. This episode introduced a slightly different style of animation as well as wardrobe changes for Sokka and Katara. We also met a new villain to take the place of Zhao; Princess Azula. It was relieved that unlike Zhao, she is not a person you can mess with and live to tell about it. She will stop at nothing to catch her prey. Azula is cunning, sly, and a firebending prodigy, and she adds so much more to the show than it had in season 1. Elizabeth Welch Ehasz, Tim Hedrick, Aaron Ehasz, and John O'Bryan did a great job writing this episode. It was a great way to kick off the 2nd season.
  • Aang learns about the Avatar state from Avatar Roku after being forced by an earth kingdom general to learn how to activate it. He wanted Aang to use it against the earth king. But the general went too far and threatened those who Aang loved the most.

A decent start to the second season as it showed the gang leaving the Northern water tribe. The episode had a lot of information and had so much that was going to be used in later episodes. The first of these things is the healing water which Katara got from the water oasis, she never uses it throughout the season but it saves Aang's life later on. The second thing which is very important is that the episode shows that Aang loves Katara as he is forced to choose between her and the Avatar state in "The Guru". A lot of symbolism as the sense of humor shows that Aang is still a child and is learning about the elements and the Avatar State too quickly. A threat also apposes Aang now as he knows the cost of the Avatar state and it forces us to think back to the North Pole and realize what could have happend if Aang was killed. Overall, an informative episode which will be linked towards the end of the season.

I'm serious they let her off to easy just like how aang let zuko go in Bato of the water tribe. I want to see some serious ness towards enemy's in season 3. Aang and friends need to either killem or lockem up cause the whole fight and runaway thing isn't working as shown when azula being alive comes back and hits them with lightning. Zuko needs pull out all the stops with Mai and Ty lee now at his side unless Azula was lying and is taking him back to the Firenation as her prisoner like her original intention was. Now if Zuko has Mai and Ty lee as his comrades then they could probably aid aang's group along with helping Iroh and any prisoners they have there in the FIRENATION.
  • The premeir of my favorite character, Azula.

    9.6
    "Superb"
  • A great start to season two. Very well done, one of my top five. A lot of elements rolled into one epsiode, character development, great plot development, two fight scenes, history, and of course...the Avatar State...

    9.9
    "Superb"
I know I've said this a billion times before, and I will proabably say it a billion times again, but this epsisode is one of my favorites. Top five at least. We get to see the inner conflict inside of Aang dealing with his Avatar State. General Fong was a very...Jet like character. Doing what he thought was good but in the wrong way. He goes through many assorted ways of trying to get Aang into the Avatar State. He wants the war finished NOW. Aang sees the wounded men, and hears how so many people are dying, he is willing to comply. While Sokka agrees and wants Aang to "glow it up", Katara thinks its the wrong way, and that all their hard work would be for nothing. Meanwhile, Zuko still has a desire to go home. And we get to see Miss Azula herself. An awsome scene of her total dictatorship with her crew, and then a scene of her kick arse lightning! We see she has the task of bringing her uncle and brother home to lock them up. Anyways, back at the base, Aang can not get himself into the Avatar State and tells the general its no use. This is where stuff gets good. General Fong won't accept no as an answer and the fight begins! Entire group of soldiers and general against Aang. Great scene, awsome fight. Meanwhile Zuko and Azula fight as well, Zuko learns of her lie and well, gets really mad. But she's just to good for him. She kicks his butt without bending, poor Zuko. But then Iroh pulls a cool trick and saves Zuko form death, go Iroh! Here comes the best part of the episode. Aang is succesfully avoiding any and all attacks, but Katara goes into the ring to help. Bad move there. General Fong sucks her down, commanding with every "suck" that Aang goes glowy. Aang ties but can't do it, so the General pulls Katara underground. Full of despise and hatred and of course love, Aang goes into the Avatar State, but learns about the consequences of it from Roku. Overall, really great episode, great stuff rolled into one thing.

    This was an average start to the second season. In this episode, General Fong of the Earth Kingdom tells Aang he is ready to face his destiny now. He continues to say that Aang has the power to wipe out dozens of fire ships in minutes, and that his regular army would be lucky just to get to the shores. Problem is, Aang can only do this in the Avatar State. General Fong makes a compromise with Aang, saying if they find a way to get into the Avatar State, he faces his destiny right now. He disagrees at first, but after seeing many wounded soldiers (General Fong called them, "The Lucky Ones."), he agrees. This ends in catastrophe though. D;

At the beggining of this episode the Gaang is just leaving Master Pakku's ship and recieving some gifts. They go to this earth kingdom city and see some earth kingdom general about going to Omashu. But the general wants Aang to master the Avatar State so he can just march into the FN and take out the Fire Lord. Aang reluctantly accepts, and it is not working. Also, Katara dislikes this plan. He then tells the general that he doesn not want to master the Avatar State, but instead to take his time and to master the elements. The general is displeased and gets angry so he trys to force Aang into the Avatar State by attacking him. Sokka and Katara try to help, only to be Aang's weak point. The general gives up attacking Aang, and aims his attacks on Katara who is automatically sunken to the ground with no way to defend herself. Aang then goes into the Avatar State, completely destorying the ground they were on. He also learns a few things. He comes out of the Avatar State as Sokka knocks out the general, and are provided an escort to Omashu. This was a pretty good episode for the beggining of a new season. It was a little emotional when Aang was begging the general not to "kill" Katara. Well it was a great episode.
