Avatar is a great show and though this pilot is a bit slow compared to the rest of the series, it provides a solid base for the rest of the season.
  • Everything that a pilot episode should be.

Avatar is often compared to anime because of its continuous story amongst other shared elements. They feel the same in texture, but what's so different about Avatar is that, at least for this episode, is it possesses that much lacking polish that animes are often without. Here is a pilot episode that does everything right; funny script, progressively teases you the story bits by bits at a satisfying rate, very good introduction to the characters, etc. And you know what? The action, which the entire cartoon is centered around, hasn't even introduced itself yet! So the best has yet to come. Can't wait for more!

I have to admit, The first half of the pilot was not my favorite at all. I actually found it a bit boring and was expecting to be wowed, but then again all pilots have a rough start.

The legend begins with a very boring quiet scene of Katara and Sokka fishing. I like that already you get a sense of what the siblings relationships is like with their arguing and Kataras temper literally breaking the ice. Eventually they come across the avatar who is found in an iceberg they come across. This is the main problem of the episode. Aang comes off as pretty annoying and unlikeable at first with his loopyness of wanting to go penguins sledding. Also i didnt really like how they introduced Appa and how he didnt fly in the beginning (in the 2nd part he does and its hilarious what Sokkas like).

When the take Aang back to the village you start getting the sense of what Aang is like, a goofy kid who just likes to have fun, which is what we didnt really get at the iceberg scene. We find out Sokka is a very hilarious character especially when all the kids wanted out of his class and went to the potty. Eventually they introduce Zuko and Iroh(irohs one of the best characters ever). I love the introduction of them. Right away just from two characters you get an insight of what the whole fire nation is like. A bunch of dead serious, hard-core fighters. Finally we get to the part where Zuko arrives at the little town. Bad scene. I was just expecting more fighting. This is an action/adventure series and there wasnt much action in the first half of the series a bit dry. But the secound part is pure epicness....
  • In a world torn apart by war, the Fire Nation nears victory. At the south pole, two young members of the small Water Tribe make a discovery that could change the course of the war and the world.

Avatar: The Last Airbender's first episode starts with a pilot episode that pretty much fulfills what it should. It introduces out main players, both the power trio that we'll be following in Book 1 and their nemesis throughout the year who will be pursuing them along with his scene stealing uncle. This being a two part opener and plenty of season to go, everyone's motivations aren't completely spelled out yet, but other important factors are. Personalities and behaviors for each character are established and like Aang, we the viewer get bits and pieces of what exactly this war has wrought on this world. Fortunately, we also have the advantage of the opening narration. One wonders if Katara ever sat down with Aang and went over that. In any case, this episode delivers a good, informative, funny, and overall entertaining opening to the show. With the characters still just getting started and far from developed in both personality and abilities, it's not quite the grand scale we will get later. That is saved for the next episode and later seasons. Still, it's a solid start.

The Boy in the Iceberg was a perfect and classic start to one of modern cartoon's best series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. I really enjoyed watching this episode as it was filled with interesting characters that are easy to connect with for children and adults alike. The animation was spectacular, the scenes amazing, and story telling was on point. This episode defines that this series will follow the Hero's Quest pattern, and this episode is The Calling. I thought this episode was fun and entertaining to watch. This is a great series for all ages. I look forward to watching more!!!!!!!

The begining was just perfect. The jokes were priceless! I can honestly say that this is the first time im reviewing a piliot episode!i usually don`t but this is my favorite show.i just love how they portray Aang as a little kid just like an 9-12 year old should/does act. I am also glad they didn`t wait to bring zuko out of nowhere and they had him and iroh in the very first episode which is this one! they also appear in the next eppi. aswell.Katara is theb perfect example of a non horny 14 yr old and Sokka was the perfect example of the older brother and the 16yr old guy.OVERALL the best season premiere

    ever. Avatar:The Last Airbender
  • The best pilot of any season...

And I mean that too! I've never seen a series start out so perfectly! The introductions of the characters were perfect, the plot was perfect, basically everything was perfect. We learned just about everything we needed to know for the series by watching just this episode. Katara and Sokka discover Aang in the iceberg and we figure out how long he was there and what happened while being in there, we learned who Zuko was and why he is hunting Aang, and we learned mini bios about all the major season 1 characters (well, minus just a few). This episode had solemn and sad moments, funny and amusing ones (i.e. Aang attacking the penguins and sliding down hills with them XD) and action (i.e. Aang fighting Zuko and his crew when they threatened the village). Perfection is the best way to describe this episode.
  • Sweet! The beginning episode-but it actually wasn't the very first episode i saw. That was Warriors of Kyoshi.

I saw this episode, and it was a huge hit to start off this golden show. Aang wakes up from the iceberg after Katara gets frustrated with her brother Sokka, Aang also has a blue arrow on his head, which is a sign that he is special, soon afterwards he is realized by katara that he's an air bender. Gran Gran thought they were extinct, but it just so happens that there is a sole survivor, which is majorly important since he's also the Avatar! The person who can master all four elelments and save the world from the ruthless fire nation! So our story and adventure begins with this episode. Be careful now Aang, Prince Zuko is now out looking for you.

When Sokka is fishing with his sister, Katara, they crash their canoe and Katara wounds up waterbending an iceberg up on the surface. Katara breaks it open and it is a 12-year-old boy with his flying bison, Appa. The boy is the Avatar. That signals Prince Zuko and his Uncle Iroh to follow the huge light that everyone within a couple hundred miles can see. When Katara takes Aang back to the village that they live at, Aang is fooling around and Sokka tells him that there is a war going on. He didn't know about it. Aang and Katara go onto a captured Fire Nation ship and signal a booby trap. Now Prince Zuko knows that the Avatar, is alive. Overall, I give this episode a 9.5.

Katara and Sokka were on a fishing expedition and happened to unleash Aang from his trap. They discover that Aang is a 12 year old boy who is also an Airbender. the last 1 of his race. He is the main character of the series. Katara and Sokka accompany aang on his mission to save the world. They are also his best pals. While this is all happening, a banished prince(zuko) from the fire nation is searching for the avatar. the avatar is the only person who could stop the fire nation from wining the war. Throughout the 1st and 2nd seasons zuko has been chasing after the avatar and his friends. Later in the episode Aang and Katara find a fire nation ship and set a flare off which alerts zuko that the avatar is alive. The story begins in "the boy in the iceberg."

This episode is a good opener for a show. The opener already starts out adventurous. It does a good job showing who the main characters are. They are about a water tribe brother and sister. The sister, Katara, can bend water. The brother, Sokka, cannot. Prince Zuko, who is part of the fire nation, hunts down the Avatar with his uncle, Iroh, who is a calm tea loving old man. The Avatar is an airbender named Aang. Aang travels with his pet Appa, who is a flying bison. These cahracters lead up to a great show for any aged audience.
  • A fun and informative introduction to a show destined to captivate millions!

"The Boy in the Iceburg" is the pilot episode of Nick's anime series, Avatar: the Last Airbender. This pilot episode starts out by introducing two of the main characters, Katara, a waterbender, and Sokka, her "normal" brother. Viewers will be instantly drawn in by the beautiful animation of the South Pole. The characters present themselves to be funny and sensitive. Katara is fed up with her brother's immaturity. It is her outburst that causes them to discover Aang--the last airbender. Not much is known at this point, but one thing that makes this episode special as a pilot episode is that it is easy to follow.

Zuko and Iroh are introduced as well. Of course, we do not know much about their history, but we are intstantly aware that Zuko isn't all bad--we know that if this show is going to have a decent plot at all, there is some sort of back story. This assumption makes us want to come back for more.

The humor in this episode balances out with the serious themes, as well. Since Aang has been frozen in an iceburg for 100 years, he's fascinated by things he hasn't seen in a long time. My personal favorite part of the episode is when Aang spots a penguin. His eyebrow twitches, his face lights up,and he screams, "PEEENGUUIIN!"

This was a very good episode leading up to an even better climax.
  • Sokka and Katara stumble upon Aang frozen in an iceberg and free him from a hundred year slumber. They go back to their tribe, ride penguins, and set off a booby trap on an abandoned fire nation ship. Meanwhile Zuko narrows in on the avatars location.

The first episode of what I believe is one of the best shows out there. We are introduced to Sokka, Katara, Aang, and Zuko. Katara frees Aang from his hundred year slumber and Zuko begins his season long chase after the gAng. Aang goes back to Sokka and Katara's tribe, rides some penguins, and triggers a booby trap on an abandoned Fire nation ship. Zuko narrows in on the Water tribe and prepares for a fight. Using a combination of fun and excitement the plot and characters begin to unfold. This episode is a nice start to an awesome show.
  • A great start to a great show,we are introduced to aang the avatar and the last airbender and companions katara and sokka . Also we meet the enemy prince zuko in his mission to capture the avatar

This is the first episode of what is to become a great series. We are introduced to the world of avatar where the world is split into 4 nations water tribe, earth kingdom, fire nation, air nomads. Each of these have people who can manipulate there native element. However there is one that can manipulate all 4 the avatar however he disspaeared 100 years ago. This series has a great premise in which the world has been ravaged by war thanks to the fire nation and the avatar has to stop them to bring back balance. In this episode we are intorduced to aang the avatar encased in ice for 100 years who is a young care free boy who must learn a lot to save the world. His 2 companions katara a waterbender who is need of training and sokka the comic relief of the group. we are intorduced to the enemy prince zuko who's goal it is to find the avatar.

This episode isn't the most action packed but it does intoduce to the characters and there goals and a glimpse into some of the different bending dicsiplines. Another positive about this show is that its funny mainly due to sokka.
  • A watertribe girl and her brother find a 12 year old boy stuck in an iceberg, not knowing he is the long lost Avatar. What turned out as a simple fishing trip turned out to be the start of the biggest adventure of their lives.

    "Superb"
This episode, and the one following it, (since they were aired together in a one hour special) create what is probably the best pilot episode for any single television show. It cleverly introduces you to all the characters and the plot of the series. It shows you the main problem within the series, that being the ruthless firenation has started a war for total control of the world. In this episode, we meet the loveable Aang, who turns out to be hiding the fact that he is the long lost avatar; a mature, confused girl named Katara who is the last waterbender in the southern pole; Kataras witty brother Sokka, who, in trying to proove hes a brave warrior, gets stuck in many funny but troubling situations; and last but not least, the banished firenation prince, Zuko, and his wise gaurdian, Uncle Iroh. This pilot episode should be taken as an example to all cartoon hopefulls, it was suspensful, funny, and just all around an amazing start to an amazing series.

Awesome start to the best show out there! I thought the first episode was stunning, great story, awesome voice acting, and unbelievable art work. I couldn't believe it was on Nick! All I can say is BRAVO Nick BRAVO! I have been watching this series sense the beginning, and it just kept getting more and more awesome! Action is top notch. All of the characters are likable too. I just LOVE the idea of bending the four elements! what isn't there to like? This show is awesome and I highly recommend it to everybody! I can't wait to see more!
  • A nice start to the series...

The series begins with a narration by the main female character Katara. She describes the current state of the world, which is opressed by imperial Fire Nation, a country of people who can bend... fire. She is a member of the Southern Water Tribe, and the only member who can waterbend. The tribe had been decimated by the Fire Nation many years back and all the men had left to fight in the war. She and her brother Sokka, who serves as the comic relief for the show, are trying to fish. Her brother makes her angry with sexist remarks, and she lets her waterbending go crazy, destroying their boat, which is what can only be described as the first lame Deus ex of the series. Anyway, the two find a giant iceberg, seeing what looks like a man in it. She tries her best to break it apart, and the iceberg opens, light spreading upwards. Prince Zuko, exiled from the Fire Nation and knowing the only way to get back is by finding the Avatar, follows this light with his ship.

Katara sees the boy in the iceberg is just a young boy, with arrows tattooed across his body. He introduces himself to them, claiming his name is Aang. He then shows them his flying bison, Appa. The group uses Appa to get back to the tribe, the elders of which greet Aang with cold reception, stating that the Airbenders are extinct.

After showing everyone his airbending, he and Katara find an old Fire Nation ship that attacked the tribe over sixty years ago. Under Aang's guidance, the two enter the ship and find themselves victim to multiple traps. Eventually, he accidentally sends off a flare, which Prince Zuko sees, and discovers where the two are.

The episode ends there, but there are some problems. Firstly, the characters are treated as one-dimensional, and although this perception is done away with later in the series, it's still a bit grating to see Zuko be a 'villain'. The juvenile treatment of the characters also results in some spotty voice-acting.

But for the most part, the pilot is a solid introduction that does most things right.

This is not the pilot but it is a great way to start off the series. The best and funniest character in this episode is Sokka. First he calls waterbending magic and that is really funny. Appa sneezes on Sokka like that is funny. Aang is the airbender and he is totally awesome. Prince Zuko is pretty spoiled and his grandpa doesn't care that much and he is so calm always. Aang fights with Zuko and it is also reavealed that Aang is the Avatar and Zuko is looking for the Avatar and the Avatar is back. Aang figures out he has been in the iceberg for 100 years. Aang finds out that he is 112 years old.
  • I knew this show would do great. Who doesn't like the concept of elements. I would be an airbender just so everyone knows. Also how do you survive in an iceburg for 100 years?

    "Perfect"
This was a great episode, it showed lots of the characters that would be important to the story line. It was also funny, action packed, and a good plot. All the elements there are elemental benders, those are great qualities of a show. This show isn't really a kids show, but more of a show for the family to watch. They also have the concept of love in it. As for the episode the characters are meeting and establishing a friendship to begin their journey. Although Katara trusts Aang, Sokka is having second opinions for the last airbender. Zuko has been searching for the Avatar or the one can master all four elements water, earth, fire, and air, to come back to his home for being banished. Together this makes an excellent show.

This episode is very well writen. most of the stuff that add up to later episodes come from this and the next episode. This is a great episode for the personalities of the charaters too. It shows how sokka want to be headstrong and a wariior (but isnt very good at it). It Tells about katara and sokkas mom that she died. and kataras been playing the mom looking after sokka and acting more mature. It shows part of aangs backstory (kinda) it shows him in a storm, then freezing himself. katara and sokka find him and we find that aang is really optimistic and wants to forget htes the avatar and just be a normal kid. but when katara and aang find an olf Firenation ship and set off a booby trap. the southern water tribe worry that he is a Firenation spy and they banish him from the village Wile all this stufff is happening to aang we find out why Zuko is hunting the avatar. Zuko trains with his Uncle. and near the end of the episode when aang accidently sets off the flare. Zuko peers into the telescope and what does he see. Aang... and the southern water tribe
  • Their not much of a summary of this episode. All they do is find Aang and Appa in a Iceberg.

    "Perfect"
This episode was kind of funny. I say that because when they found Aang in the iceberg. The first thing Aang said was, "Do you want to go penguin sledding with me". Plus Sokka getting sneezed on by Appa. That was also funny. I do not think if Sokka were in any of the episodes they would not be that funny. I give this episode a ten because I thought it was funny and the transcript was excellent. I thought avatar was dumb, then I started watching it more and I began to like the show alot more than the usaually viewer of avatar.

This is the very first Episode of the Series and a Series Classic. It is deftly plotted and has a great introduction to each of the Characters. The Creators made a smart move using this as the Pilot Episode (or Series premire) if you will. The animation is Abosuletly brillaint. and voice acting is the best I've seen (heard) in a long time. And my favorite line from the episode "What's that you said about booby traps" classic Aang. Every thing the Creators (Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko) is classic. The boy in the Iceberg is the best the Pilot episode ever made.

P.S. Sorry about the triple post.

  • Every great show requires a good start to the storyline - one that provides enough action to peak one's interest, while holding back enough to allow for ongoing plot and character development. The Boy in the Iceberg achieves both.

    8.3
    "Great"
The "official" first episode of Avatar combines all of the elements that seasoned watchers will eventually come to expect in all future episodes. It includes boyish charm, innocent humor and surprisingly strong action. The main characters (Sokka, Katara, Aang and Zuko) are all presented in as much detail as is required for the viewer to actually care what happens to them. Base personality traits are established for each character and presented in an entertaining storyline.

The bottom line is that the episode succeeds as a "stand alone" event, and sets up the series going forward. The message is clear that this is no ordinary kids cartoon.
