Every series has these episodes where we find out about the characters past, but none does it almost so perfectly as Avatar. The story starts off a little slow but keeps you interested with good humor. aang and Katara get stuck in a cave and wait out the storm and aang tells about his past. I like how this episode showed aang happy and childish like he should be. this is one of the first times we see an air temple civilization and you can already tell how unique and different the culture is. Like how they use glideers and their religions and stuff. you can easily tell how the news impacts aangs life. He can no longer play with his friends and then finds out hes going to be shipped away to train. This was one of the first times a truly felt bad for aang in the series. For a character so fun and loving it sucks seeing him sad and miserable. Finally Aang runs away on Appa in a storm and plunges in the ocean. Near death he creates an Iceberg to seal him and Appa in.... and then he wakes up to Katara. Its really great how they connected the pieces and im glad they did it earlier in the series. This isnt a series that really strides on big secrets being revealed randomly throughout the series which i like. Every story arc just keeps going and for the most part keeps getting better. As for Zuko we see how much hes changed. His father scarred him just for speaking out of term? Honestly thats one harsh and crazy father! But it also shows how heartless the firelord is and kind of shows how he doesnt even care about Zuko at all which is also showed in later episodes too (Zuko Alone). Not only were these parts of the episodes great but so was the finale with Aang going to save Sokka. My favorite parts were probably when it looked like Aang was about to create another iceberg when they were underwater. It really showed how aang didnt want to leave the world again and turn his back like the fisherman said and he got out of the storm. Another good part was when Appa flew right past zuko they just stared at eachother and Zuko made the smart decision of getting the ship fixed and worrying about his crew first. Just another amazing episode to the series.
  • The Storm

The Storm was a really great episode of Avatar The Last Airbender. I really enjoyed watching this episode because it had a lot of character development for Zuko and Aang. I really enjoyed learning more about the pasts of both Aang and Zuko. I think it may be ironic that Aang starts with A and Zuko starts with Z. I wonder if there may be some symbolism here. I thought this episode had a lot of character and plot development. This series is about Aang and his journey, however Zuko is on a journey of his own and it is very nice to see this!!!!!!!
  • Excellent excellent episode!

Although I've never been a fan of flashback episodes because often they feel more like filler if anything, but this surpassed all expectations. It wasn't just any ordinary flashback episode that covers the past of two characters, it was just really neat how it set up and how the two flashbacks kind of paralleled each other. Aang is chosen as the Avatar, the greatest entity who can bring peace to the world, but isn't ready, while Zuko, who will one day succeed the throne as the fire lord, is eager to take on the title. It's just really cool how the episode took on a scenario and presented it with two different perspectives.
  • Aang and Zuko reveal their pasts during a powerful storm...

    9.5
    "Superb"
This episode is very important to the series. We learned a bit about Aang's past when he visited the Southern Air Temple, but in this episode, Aang tells Katara all about the day he learned he was the Avatar and about the day he got caught in the ice. Aang was playing with a group of kids when five monk leaders came to get him. They explained to him that he picked four special toys to play with as a child and this meant he was the Avatar. They weren't going to share this information with him until he was 16, but the war was brewing and something had to be done quickly. When they talked of sending Aang away to train, Aang got mad, and left with Appa during a storm - never to return again. During the storm, Zuko also shares his past. We learn how he got his scar. He was in a very important meeting with his father - Fire Lord Ozai. He interrupted, and was forced to fight against his father to learn some respect. He lost, and got the scar on his face as a result.
  • A touching episode, and also has one of the best life lesson teachings.

This episode starts off where Aang meets someone who blames his long absence for all the lengthy war and suffering caused by the Fire Nation. Katara tells him to stop that, but in other news there is a storm coming later in the day, and it turns out it is going to be a big and huge thunderstorm just like the one that happened when Aang ran away from home because of complexities about the other air nomads saying he's the Avatar. It was troubing for him, but he ended up in the iceberg because of it when him and Appa fell in the water, and Aang used his airbending. This was a great episode that showed us flashbacks, both about troubling pasts for both Aang and Zuko, that was cool how uncle Iroh was telling the crew about why Zuko behaves that way too! And for Aang's story, he is a good person who doesn't behave like Zuko, so Kataa says that even though there was a lot of war and suffering, it was meant to happen since it was likely Aang would have been killed along with all the other air benders if he stayed. The old man understands his mistakes, and everyone gets along in the end! That's what makes it a happy ending since the storm also cleared up!
  • Excellent Flashback episode.

The Gaang have ran out of money and Sokka gets a job from a nearby fisherman that needs assistance. The fisherman notices that Aang is the Avatar and blames Aang for all of the corruption that has gone in the world with his absence. Aang ends up running away and Katara follows him. We learn much about Aang when he tells Katara about his past and why he ran away. Meanwhile, the crew captain of Zuko's ship is disrespected by Zuko. Later on, Iroh explains to the crew of what has happened to Zuko in his past and why he is so driven to capture the Avatar. This episode reveals much about these two character's past. This episode was well writen and deserves a ten.

This is my second favorite Season 1 episode (behink Siege of the North Part 2) flashbacks are my favorite types of episodes. Zuko's flashbacks were revealing about his scar being created by Ozai in the Agni Kai. Aang's story was revealing too. It was such a great episode in all ways. If it didn't have the flashbacks then the episode would not be as good. Iroh telling Zuko's story was cool and seeing Aang and Zuko's past was the 2nd best season 1 episode. It had no action but flashbacks are the best. Overall I give it a almost perfect 9.9.

zuko will do anything to get the avatar in his hands, even if they have to face a terrible storm. the crew try to find out why zuko is so obsessed and iroh tells them. the storm thats coming, remind aang of the day he left. aang ran away because of the pressure and zuko got a scar on his left eye for talking out of turn. to save himself from the storm, aang went into the avatar state but it still backfired and he was stuck in an iceberg. zuko was banished for not fighting back in an agni kai.
  • It was one of the best flashback episodes from any show ive seen

This episode holds a special place in my heart. We see Aang's and Zuko's respective backstories, shown side-by-side in the episode. Because of how much it does for realizing each boy's true nature, I absolutely love "The Storm." Aang is shown to have once been a normal, fun-loving Airbender with normal friends, normal Airbending mentors, a normal air bison, and a normal life. It's a refreshing step back from just having viewers see him as The Avatar, and The One who shall Save the World. Through the episode, we can better understand and relate to Aang.

Zuko's character, likewise, undergoes a startling revelation. Who doesn't love a cute little Fire Nation Prince? The creators have done a fine job with the character of Prince Zuko. He's from a noble family of the Fire Nation, but he acts just like a normal boy, sibling rivalry and all. From Zuko's backstory we realize just how much a single traumatic event can affect the fragile psyche of a young boy. DiMartino and Konietzko have, once again, outdone themselves in "The Storm." Original, powerful, and moving, this episode is dear to Avatar

Aang, Katara and Sokka have run out of money. Katara suggests Sokka get a job, and coincidentally, they meet a fisherman who is looking for someone to help him out with his fishing. But when the fisherman recognizes Aang as the Avatar, he blames Aang's absence for all of the troubles of the last 100 years, and Aang runs away on his glider. Katara follows on Appa, and when she finds him, Aang begins to reveal life before he was frozen in the iceberg. Meanwhile, Prince Zuko and Lieutenant Jee get into a fight, but Iroh breaks it up. Soon thereafter, the Lieutenant and the rest of the crew gain a newfound respect for their leader after learning of his past.
  • We get a glimpse into the past of Aang's and Zuko lives.

Perfect right down to the last note, "The Storm" is interesting, exciting, and keeps on the edge of your seat. It amazing to see the differnce in pasts the two characters Aang and Zuko have. Aang seems so nutured and cared for but also pressured. Zuko, seems more spoiled but isn't exactly loved, expect maybe by his uncle. Both share tramas and both at different degrees. This episode also does a good balance of keeping us long enough in the present and in the past. For the first time we see Zuko's father, his face covered in shadow, as it should be for a character as dark as himself. We also see again Monk Gyasto in a flashback and it is a refreshing face. If you notice, Aang's flashabacks are in brightness and refreshing colors, while Zuko's are more dark and defined. A great episode and one you can't miss.
  • Aang and Zuko's past revealed.

    "Superb"
The Storm is a very revealing episode, and its main focus is put on Aang and Zuko's past. The episode is quite sad in that we see just how Zuko got his scar, as well as his bad attitude. Aang's past is also very interesting, as well as very sad. Aang feels like he abandoned his people, and that if he hadn't have left, he could have prevented the death of his people. Katara tells Aang that he gives people hope, and meanwhile, Iroh tells Zuko's crew that the Avatar gives Zuko hope. That's just a really interesting connection there. This episode is really great. It's deep, revealing, emotional, interesting, and even a little bit funny too.
  • The gang with no money arrive in a small coastal town. Sokka gets a job and while he is out at sea a huge storm occurs. Aang tells Katara about his past. Meanwhile Zuko has some problems with his crew.

    9.1
    "Superb"
This episode shows the characters feelings and tells a lot of information about their past. Aang tells Katara about how he became the Avatar and about his life growing up with the monks. Meanwhile on Zuko's ship Iroh tells the crew how Zuko got his scar and about his relationship with his father, Fire Lord Ozai. In this episode we also see Iroh, Zuko's uncle and Ozai's brother demonstrate redirecting lightning; a skill that only a few firebenders can master. Overall I really enjoyed The Storm, it told me quite a bit about the characters. I liked the many flashbacks. Nine out of ten, a great episode.

Aang has nightmares, because he depressed of world condition in the present. He feels a deep guilt in his mind. But fortunately Katara warms him down, bringing him to brighter hope and optimism. Meanwhile, we also see Zuko's past. He has terrible past. Then, He got "lesson" from his father right through his face. Leaving him banished and hopeless. But in this episode, for the first time we see a smiling and good sides from Zuko.

That's the short synopsis. Now let's talk about the technical stuff of this episode. Unfortunately, this episode has no fight. But more importantly, this episode helps us to understand what happened in the world 100 years ago, and better knowledge for this series. Poor Zuko, he has really complicated past.

For a personal appreciation, I like this episode. Just... like. Nothing sprcial on this episode.

In this episode you find out what happened to Aang one hundred years ago and why he was frozen in that ice berg with Appa. So the episode starts with Aang, Sokka and Katara running out of money so they go to a local market and that is where Sokka meets an old man and gets a job on his ship. Soon after Sokka and the old man depart from the dock a storm begins to brew with Katara sacred of Sokka's safety Aang tries to find them, with the storm at its peak Aang remembers the day he left the air temple and flew into the open ocean. But will Aang manage to find the old man and Sokka before the storm gets them. Watch the episode to find out

This was the second episode written by Aaron Ehasz. This is one of the reasons I love it so much. This episode was really good because it told the story of how Zuko got his scar and how Aang became stuck in the iceberg. It was a really great episode to watch. It didn't really have much of a storyline but we all learned how Zuko and Aang got into really bad situations. I liked this episode alot. It was the perfect episode for avatar fans like me because it had no filler in it, and it was plain excellent. I loved it.
  • We discover what happened in Aang's and Zuko's past.

    "Perfect"
Awesome episode. This episode is a perfect example of the greatness of Avatar: The Last Airbender. From this point, the story stops being just another shallow quest to save the World. Before this episode, the spectator would have thought that Zuko was just an angry stereotype villain, but after this, one discovers how complicated his story of redmption is. We discover also that Aang already knew he was the Avatar, and how he actually was afraid of taking the Avatar's role, and how because of this, the whole Air Nomads were exterminated. From this moment onwards, one should not be able to stop watching Avatar; The Last Airbender.
  • A parallel flash back of Zuko and Aang' s pasts, not the same but similiar.

    9.8
    "Superb"
In this episode, it's the first time, that Zuko was revealed not as an antagonist in the series, but as a person that had a complecated and bittered past, hinting his self confliction and even his switching side later.

The episode described in details why Aang ran away, and why Zuko was banished. Aang ran away and his people was attacked by the fire nation, his sense of honor was lost because he wasn't there to help, he despertly wanted to make up to the world as to complete one of his duties as the avatar. Similarly, Zuko lost his honor and was banished, just because he spoke out of turn in his father's war room. Zuko must to capture the avatar to regain his honor which is impossible to happen. Zuko and Aang both had task that seemed unable to achieve, but both of them worked assiduously towards them. Their goal gave them hopes.

Aang has a strange dream about his past that clearly troubles him, but does not tell the others. It started happily with Aang, Katara and Sokka unrealistically flying through the skies, but suddenly Aang becomes alone and is trapped in a storm and plunges into the sea...

Aang, Katara and Sokka stop by a market, but then realize they're out of food and money. They run into a fisherman, who hires Sokka, but when he finds out that Aang is the Avatar, he yells at him that "he turned his back on the world." Aang becomes upset, so he flies away into a cave. Katara reprimands the fisherman for his harsh words, and goes after Aang, as a horrible storm begins brewing.

Aang starts telling his story, beginning with the day the monks told him he was the Avatar. Burdened with extra training exercises and ostracized from his friends, Aang becomes confused and afraid: so when he learns that the monks are planning to separate him from his guardian, Gyatso, he decides to run away. Aang is caught in a horrible storm, and as he is about to drown, the Avatar Spirit inside him forms an air pocket, saving himself and Appa but freezing them inside for the next 100 years. Aang suffers terrible guilt over abandoning the world, but Katara convinces him that "it was meant to be", and he "gives people hope."

Meanwhile Iroh predicts that there will be a terrible storm, but Prince Zuko informs him that capturing the Avatar is more important than the crew's safety. When the lieutenant hears this, he tells Zuko that he knows nothing about respect and calls him a "spoiled prince." While the lieutenant is complaining about Zuko and his obsession with capturing the Avatar, Zuko and the lieutenant make to fight but are stopped by Iroh. Later, when the lieutenant is badmouthing Zuko, Iroh comes in and explains why Zuko is as he is. The story starts with a handsome, younger Zuko, with more soulful eyes (as opposed to his usual glaring expression in the show's present time), a full head of hair, and doesn't have his scar yet. He complains to his uncle that he wants to get into his father's war chamber, and although he initially refuses, Iroh allows him to join, on the condition that he remain silent.

When one of the generals suggests sacrificing the 41st division as "bait," Prince Zuko speaks up against it. Zuko's father, Fire Lord Ozai grows angry, and demands a fire duel, or "Agni Kai" to solve the matter. Zuko agrees to the duel, believing that he is going to fight the general, but it is revealed that his opponent is the Fire Lord. In the duel, Zuko cries, "Please father, I only had the Fire Nation's best interests at heart! I'm sorry I spoke out of turn!" Ozai states, "You will fight for your honor." Zuko falls to his hands and knees, and begs "I meant you no disrespect! I am your loyal son!" Ozai says, "Rise and fight, Prince Zuko!" Then Zuko falls all the way to the ground and declares, "I won't fight you." As Zuko rises to look at his father while crying, the Fire Lord demands, "You will learn respect, and suffering will be your teacher." The screen lights up as Zuko screams; Ozai has burned his son's face, causing Zuko's distinctive scar. (During this seen, Azula is seen in the Audience)

Iroh explains that Prince Zuko was banished because his refusal to fight was seen as "shameful weakness," and the only way to redeem himself is by capturing the Avatar. Iroh adds that life will never return to normal, but that the Avatar gives Zuko hope.

Lightning strikes the ship. In a move of true selflessness, Zuko saves the helmsman, with the help of the lieutenant. While Zuko and Lieutenant Jee are attempting to save the helmsman, Iroh is shown redirecting lightning away from striking the ship. Meanwhile, Aang and Katara go rescue the fisherman and Sokka. When the trio and the fisherman pop out of the water close to Zuko's ship, he allows them to fly away, deciding that it is more important to help his crew get to safety. He also apologizes to his uncle.

Later the fisherman apologized to Aang for his harsh words, grateful that he saved his life. Aang also confided to Katara that he is done dwelling in the past, and will do what he can for the present. The episode concluded when they went outside to watch the sky clearing up.
  • Great episode. Shows the past of Aang and Zuko. Interesting to watch.

Aang, Sokka, and Katara are continuing their journey to the Northern Water Tribe. On the way, they realize they don't have any more money and Sokka gets a job with a fisherman. That same fisherman upsets Aang and blames him for the sufferings the Fire nation caused.

Zuko's crew is disappointed with him because they think that Zuko doesn't care about them and only the avatar. Iroh predicts a storm coming.

Katara catches up with Aang during the storm. She asks Aang what is wrong and Aang tells her about his past life. Aang grew up in the Southern Air Temple. He had plenty of friends and the other monks looked up to him. Aang mastered airbending pretty early after he invented the air scooter. Then Aang was told that he's the avatar. The monks knew because he choose the toys every avatar before him had chosen to play with. Aang was only 12 and avatars were usually told when they were 16. However, the monks knew that war was coming and told Aang early.

Aang soon realized that being the avatar wasn't so great. His once-friends refused to let him play with them because they thought being the avatar would give him an unfair advantage. Soon, Aang's only friend was his mentor, Monk Gyatso.

Aang realized one day that the monks didn't like Gyatso's way of training him. The other monks wanted Aang to be training more. Gyatso wanted what was best for Aang, but was overruled. Aang would be sent to the Eastern Air Temple. Aang decided to run away. That night, when he was running away (or flying away) on Appa a storm hit them. Aang and Appa fell into the ocean but Aang went into the avatar state and put a huge ball of air around them that froze. The next thing Aang knew was waking up in Katara's arms in the Southern Water Tribe.

Zuko also had a tragic life story. When he was 14, he wished to go to a war meeting. However, the guards did not permit him. He asked his uncle Iroh to let him in. Iroh agreed on the condition that Zuko would not speak up against the war generals. However, when Zuko heard that the war general wished to sacrifice new recruits to beat the earth kingdom, he became angry. The war general was offended that Zuko spoke against him. Zuko was challenged to Agni Kai. Zuko accepted and wasn't afraid of the general. However, Zuko misunderstood. Zuko offended the war general but in doing so shamed his own father. It wasn't the war general Zuko had to fight, but his own father, Fire Lord Ozai.

Zuko refused. He would not fight his own father. Ozai scarred Zuko and banished him on a hopeless mission to capture the avatar to restore his honor. (Back to present time) During the storm, the fisherman and Sokka get lost and are about to die. Aang and Appa go to rescue them.

Zuko sees the avatar from his ship. The crew wants to know what to do. Zuko surprisingly takes the safety of the crew into account. Zuko orders the ship to be sent to safety. During this time, Zuko saves the helmsman's life. The crew has new respect for Zuko, now. In this scene we see Iroh deflecting lightning.

The fisherman doesn't blame Aang anymore since Aang saved his life. Aang is confident again.

This episode has plenty of action in it. The main focus, however, is the character development. You get insight into Aang and Zuko's past lives. Zuko is started to be redeemed from this point. Also, most of the episode is a flashback. I would recommend this episode. Without it, we would not be able to understand Aang and Zuko and the trouble they went through. We learn what made them who they are and why they're doing what they are presently.
  • Insight to the past.

This was my second favorite episode in Book 1. I loved the way that the storm brought the two groups together around fires to tell stories of their past. We learn why Aang was in the iceberg, why he has the tattoos, and why he ran away from his home at the air temple. We see Zuko's past, how he got his scar, what happened at the war meeting, and how the crew feels about Zuko and Iroh. Uncle Iroh was allways more comfortable being with the crew, allways trying to improve morale by hosting a music night and coming down to their quarters to chat. Zuko was orininally more secluded, and spent most of his time in his room, meditating and thinking. In the end, Aang and his friends and Zuko, Iroh, and their crew all find out much about the past that they had and why they are where they are today.
  • A wonderful episode full of Aangs flashbacks

This episode was great as all the others are. I really wanted to know how Aang ended up in that iceberg and why he had been in there for so long. So much was unanswered until this episode aired. This episode was about Aang telling his story of how he found out he was the avatar and how it affected his life. Aang told Katara of how the monks told him that he was the avatar at such a young age, because of the war the sensed. Once Aangs friends found out he was the avatar they know longer wanted Aang to be in their bending games because they now though he had an advantage, thus depressing Aang. Aang listened secretly in on the monks to find out he was to be imported to another temple for his avatar training. Aang was unhappy about this and ran away during a storm. The storm was to powerful and Aang and the flying Appa fell into the sea, Aang was drowning until his Avatar State kicked in and froze himself in an Iceberg.

This is one of the best episodes of the first season, because we learn a lot about Zuko and Aang. Aang reflects on when he was living at the Air Temple, and when he was told he was the Avatar. He ran away from the Air Temple, and was eventually frozen in the ice. Elsewhere, Iroh tells the crew of the ship about Zuko's past. We learn that his father gave him the scar after he insulted one of the general's plans. Zuko didn't want to fight his father, so his scar was his punishment. He was banished to find the Avatar.

This is my third favorite episode of season 1. Aang has memories of his past during a violent storm. Aang actually ran away from the southern air temple, and was frozen in the iceberg for 100 years. Meanwhile, Zuko remembers when he was still in the fire nation. When Zuko insulted the general, Zuko had to duel his own father, Fire Lord Ozai. Zuko refused to fight, so he got a scar from Ozai, and was banished and sent to capture the Avatar. In reality, the avatar gives Zuko hope. After the storm passes, both Aang and Zuko accept the things they have done.

    Aang's Story:

when aang was a kid, the Southern air temple monks told him he was the avatar 4 years early becuase they felt war was upon them. Aang's life began to change, he was treated differently, and barely had any fun becuase he had to train. aang's Guardian Monk Gyatso, helped train him, but when he heared that monk gyatso was going to be taken away, he ran away. when he ran away, a storm hit, he and appa plunged into the water, and aang put them in a giant airball, that froze under the water.

    Zuko's Story:

Zuko was 14 and he wanted to go into the war room, where war startagies were planned. he was not supposed to speak, but when he heared an unfair plan he just had to. He showed disrespect to the war minister, and had to agni kai (fire duel) him, but since it was in the firelords war room, he hads to duel the firelord, his own father. he refused to fight his father, and that showed weakness. so as punishment, he was banished until he captured the avatar.
  • This is my all time favorite episode.

I love this episode because it tells Zuko's history and we get to see Zuko when he was only 13-14. He was so sweet and innocent. It was a very interesting episode. My favorite character is Zuko so it's obvious which episodes are my favorites. I can not wait til Katara finally finds out how he got his scar. When that happens, then that episode will be my absolute favorite episode. I didn't care as much about Aang's story as I did about Zuko's. I wonder if Iroh will tell the GAang or if they'll here it sraight from the firebender's mouth. I doubt Zuko will tell them.
  • Aang and Katara get stuck in a storm and Aang explains to her what happened to him and how he ended up in that iceberg. Iroh tells the crew why Zuko is the way he is and why he wants the avatar so badly.

This was a phenomenal flashback episode! We got to see tons of new airbenders and more of what their culture was like. We also see more of how difficult it was for Aang to be announced as the avatar at such a young age. This episode also reveals a lot about Zuko and his relationship with his father. We also find out what Zuko did that made him have to search for the avatar. The flashbacks were insightful, interesting, and at some times funny. This episode was excellently done and had a lot of plot and character development. I think that this is one of my favorite episodes from season one. This definitely one of the best episodes of avatar not including the finales. I loved this episode!
