That part was seriously hilarious. Honestly, the commentry was really funny and whatever stuff like that instead of those annoying people talking and talking. anyway, this is an awesome way to start of avatar. Too bad it didnt show but of course i rather the pilot that was shown.

the ending part was seriously funny when those guys were saying "Appa has a really small head" and Aangs falls off blacking out saying "I mean to do that"

This was a really good episode. Kya is a pretty good name too. So, i love this pilot. Anyway, the hawk was alive. Woo! XD
  • Glad this wasn't the real Avatar.

I am very glad that Mike Dante DiMartino and Brian Kinitzko decided to not have this as the first episode of Avatar. Many things wrong with it. For example: The graphics are not as good as they are with the current show Avatar. Katara's name is Kya in the Unaired Pilot Episode and I think Katara fits the current Katara better than Katara. Last, Aang's graphics on him are horrible. There was only one good thing about it: Zuko had a pet hawk or parrot. They should have kept that, that would really fit Zuko seeing his character now. Overall, I really don't like this and I give it a 7.6.
  • Kind of hard to tell with commentary. Basically the gAang flys away from Zuko and rest on an island, Sokka gets captured and Aang fights Zuko.

The first episode ever of avatar and the only to never make it to tv. Aangs voice is different and luckily changed. Katara's name is Kya. This episode has ideas that are seen all throughout the rest of the series. The serpent, the scaffolding, the big statue, the hawk, and katara's moms name. Any way it clearly shows how the some ideas about the show changed. Aang going into the avatar state was kinda unlike him. I think it's good that this episode wasn't the first aired pilot cause i like the boy in the iceberg much better. Even so it was cool to see.
  • the original pilot

the original pilot that started it all. there's a lot of things that changed, like kya's name which is now katara. zuko doesnt have a parrot no more and aang's outfit changed. also the fireball are just a couple of firebenders making a huge fireball. i never got to see this pilot without the creators talking the whole time. now i got 41 words left to say and all i got to say that the series is awesome. you rock bryke! (bryan and mike! of course you all know this) 10 more words left and i will be done. im done!
  • I wish they made the pilot the first eppie of the show:( That was so cool! But I think Zach Tyler Eisen makes a better Aang than Mitchell Musso.

In the pilot, they had so many different things. Like the fire nation wore different kinds of clothes. Zuko has a pet bird. Katara's name is Kya. And they were building a big statue of Ozai. I'd like it if they would make more eppis like that but season 1 is over and there are only a few more episodes left *sigh*. At least we have the movie on the way, that Puppetbenders thing on YouTube, the Abridged series on YouTube, the books, and all the stuffed characters (prays to Avatar creators to make a hug-me-Zuko doll). If only they could make 4 more seasons...
  • The pilot that led to the amazing series

This was a really great episode. I could not hear much due to the commentary, but I listened closely and I noticed it was filled with great quotes and much humor. The characters fit perfectly. the clothing was original, and the voice acting was great. The only thing i could say negative about this is that the animation was good. but not all that great, It was nothing compared to the animation in the real show though. The backstory was amazing. It showed each characters personality and what they were doing in thier life style. Like i said though. the humor was great (momo aang mostly) and the action was awsome, like Zuko and aang fighting surrounded by fire. This was a great start to the season

This is a pretty good episode (episode?). Although it has no continuity with the actual show it gives a good insight to Avatar before Avatar. We see the culture, inspirations and little details that make there way into the actual show. The audio commentary is especially revealing to the initial intentions of the creators. What's also very cool is the things that they cut out, Zuko's bird is a prime example which gave the pilot simple child like humor. Overall this is a must see for any Avatar fan and for anyone interested in the shows origins. 8.5/10 as Mike and Bryan (creators) were just starting there idea.
  • An un-aired savior for avatar.

The avatar the last airbender ACTUAL pilot. Even though the only showing is with commentary it was a good episode if u could hear what the characters were saying. And Katara's old name which is kya. though there was the focus on fire nation soldiers the new episodes were missing. But showed great character development. Different sides of old characters is always a good thing to see and they did a good job of it like showing Zuko jumping down in front of Zuko and crawling on the ground while fire was coming out of his nose.Overall a great pilot episode but i do hope they make one without commentary.
  • You know what, this ain't even the pilot, it was just a pitch for Nickelodeon to get the idea.

You know what, this ain't even the pilot, it was just a pitch for Nickelodeon to get the idea. First off, all the character's are very diffrent from the real show, their aspects are diffrent, especially Aang. The Fire Nation uniforms are very diffrent from the real ones, sokka's boomerang is diffrent, and everything was just plain outta place, even Katara's name.. But it still showed one thing, if it was not for this episdode, it would not have evoled into the great, fantastic sieries we know and love soo much, all in all it was not a bad pilot, so I will give it a great rating..
  • It was ok but not great.

The episode starts out with a different opening intro. The episode starts out about the Avatar and friends being chased by Zuko. I think the episode moved to fast because they didn't even explain how they got in this situation. Then the sea serpent(seen again later in the show) attacks Zuko's ship. Then they land and start with some character development. They are then captured by Zuko and taken to his base. Zuko has a bird that is rivals Momo. They fight and break out of the base and thats the end of the episode. I think this episode was to rushed and they didn't do enought character development but hay this is the ploit episode.
  • The pilot episode for Avatar: The Last Airbender

    "Perfect"
I didn't want score this episode because it has no bearing on the actual series. However, I must say that this was VERY interesting to watch. I got to see just how much Mike and Brian changed the show from their original ideas. For instance, the voice actor for Aang is different in the actual series than in this pilot. (For unknown reasons, they recast Aang.) Also, Katara is known as 'Kya' in the Pilot. Once again, changed for unknown reasons. It's interesting to see how the costumes have changed as well, most notably the firebender uniforms. in the pilot, they are very pointy and have large horns on the helmet. Perhaps this is what Sokka is referring to in 'The Siege of the North" when Han displays the captured Fire Navy uniforms that have shoulder spikes, whereas the new ones are more streamlined. Aang's costume has changed as well; as commented on by Mike and Brian, Aang used to have an asymmetrical fold in his pants that, "no one could draw." In this episode, we see Aang purposely throw himself into danger to trigger the Avatar state, something he has never done in the series, (though the Earth Kingdom general in "The Avatar State" tried.) Also, after watching "The Avatar State" I don't believe Aang will EVER do that. He deeply despises the Avatar state because he has no control over what he is doing. All in all, this was a very interesting and informative episode, even though it has no impact on the storyline.
  • Mike and Bryan were close to having the perfect show. This was a good pilot, but I'm SOOO glad they changed the things they did.

Mike and Bryan were close to having the perfect show. This was a good pilot, but I'm SOOO glad they changed the things they did. Like Aang's outfit. (Although there wasn't a dramatic difference, I'm glad they changed it.) I'm also glad they changed Katara's name. Kya's not awful, but Katara's better. 8) Aside from those and a few other minor details, Mika and Bryan had a great original idea. The overall plot was the same. (It's one of the most original, creative, and greatest plots of and cartoon, and show, that I've ever seen. 8)) So yeah, this was a good shot at a pilot.

    Seeing this was very interesting...

It is really strange, altough fun to see how things changed form this test plot to the real thing. Katara is now Kya, aang and zuko both are diferent in the inside, they're actions... well and sokka is sokka. Zuko has a pet hawk, the firenation outfit is diferent.

But even with all the diference it still shows everything that makes the "real" such a succesful cartoon:

There is the funny parts (go sokka!=P), the great bending scenes, not to mention zuko's/aang's fight.

The only thing that in my way to see it wasn't that good was the avatar state part, they just putted it in there like if it was something usual and not as the powerful thing it actually is.
  • test run for the series of avatar

even though there was commentary, and i could barely hear what the character were saying, from what i heared, it was funny. The firenation armour in the pilot is awsome!!! zuko and aangs fight was pretty cool too, and when aang knew he was loosing, he threw himself off the edge, so he would be in danger, and the avatar state would take over. momo was funny, and for Zuko's hawk, lets just say... sucks to be him.so this was pretty good, becuase it had Some action, and alot of funny parts. it ends with a funny ending of aang going to sleep, and falling off his flying bison appa.

well this is the firts episode of avatar where katara name is kya and aang have a different dress but sokka still be the crazy of the group so it is very fun.Ican not bilive the drees of zuko ok it was so ,ok red it was a armor with a special things and the animals like the rihno look terrible they were creepy.katara well kya the relationsheep with aang was not lovely .In the the show aang is in love with katara but in this episode the only look like ''friend''jajjaja and zuko look more evil he made me remmember Azula .Is true ty is only the frist episode but it was fun.
  • I almost wish they would of kept the series like this instead of what they've been doing so far.

You know so many people hate the unaired pilot episode and I don't understand why. I thought it was absolutely perfect and i wish this what Avatar started out like. The first season made by Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino didn't have many good eps mostly fillers. It was cool to see the difference between characters from the pilot and the original. But I don't like how they came out for the original. Aang isn't serious enough Katara and almost all female characters which there are few of since nick is sexist are over exageratedly powerful and the strongest male character benders are rarely seen even though one of them is a main character. All the characters for the nick version who use weapons are useless and only one character Ty lee is the one and only character to physically hit people. Leh Gasp!!! Momo rival Grr in cuteness. I liked katara and Aangs original voices better cause they make aang out to be a kid when he's 13 and no 13 year old has a voice like that and looks like a little kid.
  • Very interesting and funny to see the first test run for Avatar!

You know so many people have rated this unaired pilot episode poorly and I don't understand why. It was absolutely incredible for me to see what Avatar started out being directly from the minds and mouths of Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino. It was wonderful to see the advancement of characters and how they were finally arrived upon. I loved the sequence with Momo playing like a cat and chasing things. It was very awesome to hear Bryan say he had actually drawn that part based on watching his cat play. From such humble beginnings a legend is born! More than anything else I think this episode shows how great ideas evolve and grow and that even the tiny seeminly insignificant acorn can grow to be a great oak one day!
  • Every Avatar fan should watch this one.

This was a really interesting little morsel the Avatar creators threw to us. The pilot is a little strange because of the differences in character design, voices, and to an extint plot. It's a good look into what goes into the creative prossess and I have to say that any devoted Avatar fan should give it a look. I'd love it if the creators would show some of the rejected storylines as well, because these kinds of things always interest me. But, back on topic, take this pilot as what it is. The production quality is low, by the standards of the show, and the voice acting is a bit odd, but it was made to just give Nick an idea of the gem they found.

I first saw this on my space. I think it is really neat and the show is even great in the early stages! It is so amazing that so many ideas came from this pilot. This episode will leave you really impressed. But I can not believe the fire nation outfits and how Katara's name was Kya. I am glad they changed that. I gave this episode a 10 simply because it is Avatar! And all of Avatar episodes deserve tens. If you are a fan of this series you really need to watch this pilot, it was great! But I just hope to see it without commentary one day.
  • This was a hilarious/awesome pilot. It has nothing to do with the real show, yet it has EVERYTHING to do with the real show! Avatar fans MUST watch this!

This was actually a very funny pilot. The art style was alot different from the current one, but some scenes were acutally animated by one of the creators himself! In this pilot, Aang, Sokka, and Kya (Now known as Katara)are trying to get away from the ruthless Prince Zuko. Aang's voice and clothes are a little bit different as well. Aang has a symmetrical line going diagonally across his pants, while his voice actor is Mitchel Musso(Hannah Montana). I really enjoyed this pilot to the max, and couldn't stop laughing afterwards. If you are a true Avatar fan, you MUST watch this! ;3

I didn't care for this pilot too much. I guess I am just used to the original pilot and character names. I think the fight was cool, but yet, I think they made some good changes. The Avatar State issue was a big deal. I am glad they made it a more intense process, rather than Aang just throwing himself into danger to go into the Avatar State. I am glad they took out Zuko's pet hawk. I prefer to see more bending than Momo fight a hawk. Overall, I think it was a different episode and I am glad they changed it up.

This episode is awesome,, i still hope they would put this on the internet and post this where you can watch it without the dumb commentary,,,anyway the firenation uniform was way different from todays episode on avatar. If you didnt see this episode you would like to see the begging because thats were you can see the firenation uniform,, on the uniform is like these 2 sharp teeth,, on the pants are any 2 teeth sticking out,, and then there is fire coming up from the boots up.. it is very weird if you see it the first time,, lol!
  • This is bizzare (in a good way). It's interesting to see what aspects from the pilot made it into the actual series.

    9.5
    "Superb"
First off, I'm glad that the creators changed Kya to Katara. Katara sounds better in my opinion. Also, what was up with Zuko's hawk? I liked it (it could've been like a nemesis for Momo in the series) but I'm kind of glad that it wasn't picked up for the series.

Aang's cheesy snap-shot photo on his glider really made me laugh, it was just surreal

When I heard about the pilot (I watched it on YouTube last week) I thought that it would be much like "The Boy in the Iceberg" y'know, introducing Aang to the world. But instead it happened some time after, which I think was a good idea. The first episode of any series is much about explaining things and it was probably better in the long run to show a pilot episode with some action.

Well, I've rambled on for about 150 words, so I'll just shut up now :)

i saw the pilot about 2 and a hlaf years ago, maby even longer then that. it was on a copy of the original taoe shown to nikalodian. I was hooked instantly. i loved the characters, the costumes, the jokes. i got this tape by way of a friend. his sister is on the team who created it. she is one of the three designing characters and i tyhink animating. only three people do character designe, her and the creators. it is a loose conection, but i did see it long before the show ever arived on air. good stuff

its pretty awsome to watch the humble beginnings of such a great show. the unaired pilot is pretty good , and is quoted by one of the commenttators and series produces as being low budget. this is obvious, when compared to the actual series, the animation isnt as good and some of the voices and illustrations arent as good (eg. aangs voice, the air that he bends, and zukos uniform) it has its funny moments like the actual series, and a few thing from it make it into the actual series. a good thing to watch if you have fifteen minutes to spare
  • Sokka gets captures by prince Zuko. Kya (Katara) goes to save him, then is captured herself. Aang goes and saves them both.

    "Perfect"
This pilot episode was pretty interesting. It was before they got the voice actor for Aang. This was before they decided to name Sokka's sister Katara. Her name was Kya here. In this episode, Kya is more worried about Aang getting captured, so she makes him wait with Appa while she goes to look for Sokka. This is also the only episode where Aang puts himself in danger to go in to the Avatar State. In this, Zuko had a pet hawk that was fighting with Momo. I'm really glad that they changed Kya's name to Katara. It sounds a lot better. But yes, this was a pretty good pilot episode.
  • Well, Ive never seen it but it looks interesting...

    9.1
    "Superb"
I have never seen this pilot yet, but from all the reviews and notes, etc., it looks interesting. But when I read that Katara's name before hand was Kya, I laughed a little. But of course, if they hadn't changed her name, I probally would be used to it. It her original name was Kya and I saw Katara for the first time, my reaction would probally be the same. Well, anyways, I've seen pictures and images of the show on sites, the animation is a little poor but the characters looko basically the same. Well, I'm hoping to find it somewhere!
  • An extra for the dvd box set, it's fun to see what the creators kept and what was discarded. The episode is not available without commentary, but it's worth a look to see where the series came from and what it ultimately could have been, now that's scary!

    8.0
    "Great"
It's amazing to see what the original pilot for this great series was. I'd love to rate it higher then an 8 but I just can't. Why? Because I can't simply compare it to every other series out there, I can only compare it to what it would eventually become, and there is no comparison (did that make sense?).

I gave it the benefit of the doubt here since you can't exactly hear the audio well (I was originally going to give it a 7). What I can hear though is pretty good, including the original voice actor for Aang, Mitchel Musso. I'd heard nothing but criticism for his performance from those that had seen this before me but I have to say most of it was unfounded. Mitchel makes Aang sound different in many ways but most of those ways are not bad, especially when you consider the differences in the character Aang for this pilot. Aang is portrayed here as someone who's well aware of what he can do and is therefore confident in his fighting skills. Even the Avatar state is treated as a simple power-up that Aang knows exactly how to tap into and can control when he uses it. Mitchel takes this idea to it's logical extension, Aang sounds mischievous and confident and enjoys his avatar abilities, rather then the Aang of the series who is care-free and fun-loving and trying to get his mind off of his avatar abilities whenever he can. His only real flaws are sounding a bit too old for a 12 year old character, and not being as endearing and, for lack of a better word, "cute" as Zach's performance (which is technically the writer's fault anyway).

(It's hard to truly review and judge the rest of the episode since it's a start rather then a true episode. I mean it was never aired so it wasn't really meant to be criticized or praised for that matter but I'll do my best.)

The rest of the episode suffers from the same thing that the 3rd X-men movie suffered from. It's the same as the Avatar series except without the nuance and subtlety. This by itself would normally produce a show of the same quality as pretty much any other average cartoon. The problem here is that the Avatar series is known for it's nuance so to not have it makes it seem that much worse in comparison. Of notable mention here is the less "angsty" Prince Zuko who seems much more like a willing puppet of his father here than he ever should given his background, and the complete lack of Iroh, who is (or was until the season 2 finale) the best characterization of a "villain" that's probably ever been produced. As I said, most of this is null and void since this isn't a sequel or an attempt to extend the series, this is what the series came from. And I have to say Avatar the series is a great improvement on what is shown here as an average (if not maybe slightly above average) blueprint. If you decide to get the DVD box set, check it out, it's worth the watch.
