A The Legend of Korra Community
Nickelodeon (ended 2014)

The Legend of Korra will return for its third season on Friday, June 27, and no, that isn't a typo. The premiere date of Book 3: Change is a week from today, according to IGN. And on that day, THREE new episodes will air back-to-back-to-back, after which the show will take a week off for the July 4th holiday and return on July 11.

You may be asking yourself, "Wait. So soon? But Nickelodeon has barely promoted it! I was expecting some big stuff at Comic-Con! That trailer you embedded above was just released last week! I've barely had time to decompress from that Season 2 finale! What gives?"

I'm only spitballin' here, but I imagine the rush to get the episodes out has everything to do with the fact that on June 7, or thereabouts, MundoNick (Nickelodeon's Spanish-language branch) accidentally leaked dubbed versions of a number of episodes from Book 3 via its website. Those episodes were, of course, torrented, .GIF'd, and fansubbed in a matter of days, if not hours. If you're part of the LoK fandom through Tumblr and such, I imagine it's been a minefield of spoilers.

In any case, that's the skinny. You pumped? Excited? Me, I'm mostly... worried. I was not a fan of Book 2's scattershot and lackluster narrative, and while that trailer is promising lots more Lin—YAY!—I am still concerned about the show getting back to being good, as are a number of others. I guess we'll find out if we can let loose a sigh of relief or a sigh of frustration next week!

Oh, and one more thing: If you've gone ahead and watched ahead or immersed yourself in .GIFs and summaries, please don't discuss or allude to anything spoilery of it in the comments. Not everyone, including me, is as dialed in as the rest of you cool kids.

Looks like we'll FINALLY see Zuko! I'm surprised based on the ridiculous decision to break down the barrier to the spirit world that there doesn't appear to be any spirits around as friend or foes. I didn't see ANY spirits. Not that I'm complaining. Just wondering what happened. Guess we'll find out unless we're just pretending that didn't happen which again, no complaints there.

ok so the the trailer has me intrigue. Looking forward to The Legend of Korra Book 3 and hope Korra personality has grown up, unlike book 2 that really got me irritated and annoyed with in a lot of its episodes.
Don't get me wrong I really like The Legend of Korra, but Avatar: The Last Airbender will always hold a special place and meaning to me and still miss the characters of that show.

i couldnt even finish book 2 because I hated Korra so much. And Mako too. The characters are just too whiny, and Bolin was beyond useless and not funny. ATLA is my favorite animated series, but this new series is just saddening. You really do feel they made a female Avatar just to do it. Korra is just a complete brat throughout. Book 1 I thought was decent though.

Yeah I found Korra to be really annoying and really frustrated in book 2 and you really hit it on the bending brothers as well. I just don't find any of the characters in LOK that endearing or that I'm invested in except maybe maybe Eska (I find her to be a total hoot) and Tenzin's children being funny and amusing.
I remembered watching ATLA and finding in the beginning Sokka annoying, but grew to really like his character over time and the same with Zuko (thought he be the typical cliche villain of the show), but what a surprise. As for strong female characters in ATLA: I don't remember Katara being annoying like Korra or am I wrong? and well Toph was just the best.
I find a lot of the characters in ATLA to be very memorable, in which I don't see yet in LOK and wish they would have injected some of Toph and Katara personality into Korra. But like I mentioned LOK is ok and will see after a few episodes of Book 3 if I will continue. The trailer do have me intrigue.

Wasn't that Zuko in trailer? Think we gonna see some old faces, but yeah LoK could be better. Korra sucks as Avatar, not a good lead...think people like her, just because she is female character. Personally I feel as Aang should be the last Avatar we seen and if they wanna milk this, they should've done it with previous Avatars. They could do way better female Avatars than Korra.

I totally agree and I'm a female viewer and yes Aang should have been the last Avatar. Lok is ok, but not in the same level as ATLA, in terms of great storytelling and great characters development in my opinion.

Three episodes will be all we need to see which season was the fluke.

It's nice to have something good to watch during the summer when all the regular shows are in hiatus.

And let's hope Hollywood doesn't decide to make a live-action movie of Korra.

I dunno what's going on in this trailer that I'm just seeing now for the first time...and frankly, I don't care. Giddyup!!!

What? I watched the trailer 2 days ago and was getting pumped then bummed that I would probably have to wait so long for the season, but next week? Yeah I can handle that!

the first 3 seasons of avatar and season 1 of korras are on sale on amazon for 10 bucks each. get em while they're hot.

I will watch the first three episodes than I will decide from there. I kinda wish that Korra had closed both spirit portals.

In the meantime, Book 1 was/is awesome.

I miss 1st Avatar Wan. Beginnings(both episodes) were/are so awsome. Legend of Korra has too many characters.

Ok I know this is a weird statement but I have never even heard of the Legend of Korra books. I've seen the show advertised on TV a couple of times and my little nephew used to watch it sporadically.

My question is: Is this show worth checking out to an adult who isn't into animated stuff apart from the odd kids movie (usually because I have to take my 9 year old nephew to the movies)???
As an adult, I have never seen an animated series apart from The Simpsons, Beavis & Butthead, Futurama and other "cartoon series aimed at older demographic".

Any answers are appreciated. Especially descriptive ones that explain what makes the show good/watchable. Also, is reading the books a prerequisite?

Each season of the TV series is called a book. Season one is "The Legend of Korra, Book One: Air". I can see how that could be confusing for people not familiar with the show.

I don't think it was planned, but Book 1 really appealed to adults. I saw it as just a good story with likable characters that just happened to be animated. It's not adult-targeted like the comedy series you mentioned, but it doesn't talk down to the audience like they're naive children, either.

Thank you for your reply. :-) Yeah, now that the book/season thing is clarified, I'm keen to give it a shot. Likeable characters?? That's always a big plus for me. :-) Yeah, and I love that you mentioned that it's a show you like that just happens to be animated, rather then the other way around.

First, a nomenclature clarification: "Books" refers to "Seasons" when talking about about Legend of Korra and Avatar: The Last Airbender, so no books to actually pick up...well, there are like kid-friendly novels and some graphic novels, but not book-book type of things. So this isn't Game of Thrones.

To answer your question: Yes, it is worth for an adult to check out. Most people I know who love the show are in their 30s, if not older. Some of them have kids, some do not, but all enjoy the shows' (generally) exciting storytelling, rich characters, mature themes presented in accessible, kid-friendly ways (especially Season 2 of The Last Airbender), and there's also plenty of humor.

Season/Book 1 of Last Airbender is a little more kid-targeted in the early going, but finds a good rhythm toward the end that you'll have forgotten a number of lazier jokes and storybeats that become the exception to the rule. Season/Book 2 of Korra was something of a mess, but out of the 5 seasons of TV the shows creators have produced for this universe, it's the only one I can really say that about, which is no mean feat, I think.

Not sure if this is descriptive enough, but I'm trying to avoid over-selling the show as well. Hope this helps!

Thanks Noel!
Oh wow, I didn't even consider that BOOK might just be a word for SEASON. But it makes sense now. To be honest, I'm kind of relieved that I don't have to read anything and can just jump into Book 1. ;-)
I'm definitely intrigued now, especially since you wrote the article. Not that I'm trying to discredit the community comments, because they're always helpful too but I've come to really trust your judgement and every show you've recommended has been worth my time. Some of them have ended up my favourites.
I'm gonna have to check out The Last Airbender & Korra now. I'm in my 30's and I really like the fact that it's accessible to both adults & kids. Hopefully my 9 year old nephew will want to watch with me so I've got someone to discuss it with. :-)

Last year I wondered why Nick was burning through the episodes then noticed the quality drop. Starting this season with 3 episodes has me worried. Maybe it's good that I'll get to find out first-hand so soon.

I've been avoiding spoiler sites and hoping something good can come from the leak. I don't want Nick to lose lots of money over it and decide not to renew.

No worries abut not renewing. Book 4 was already been picked up not long after Book 1, and is likely entering production now, if it hasn't already. Book 4 is likely to be the conclusion however.

I wonder if the release date being so early was influenced by the leaked episodes. It just seems odd to put it out with little to no promotion at a time of the year that they didn't start airing either of the previous seasons.

Whatever the reason is though I'm still excited and glad to be able to watch it so soon. It's not like the ratings really matter since I'm pretty sure season 4 is already in production.

And people wonder why I avoid Tumblr. 9_9

I will be going in spoiler-free and hoping, hoping, HOPING we don't Korra being a jerk for half the season again.

I also want Mako to get a personality transplant but now I might as well ask for a pony.

Exciting news. Season 1 may have been better but season 2 was pretty great too. Looking forward to book 3.

Best animated show out there since Tron-uprising was cancelled! Still hurts ;)

I liked Tron Uprising but enjoyed Korra book 1 much more. I hope book 3 returns Korra to greatness, but right now Rwby remains my favorite and most looked forward to animates series.

What a great surprise. Most shows seem to delay delay delay release dates so I know not to take news like this for granted. I see to be one of the only people that wasn't bothered by Season 2. Sure I guess for the sake of comparison Season 1 was clearly better but for me the joy of watching this show wasn't compromised. I have nothing but good expectations for Season 3.

According to the creators, Book 3's post-production is all wrapped as well, which wasn't the case when Book 2 was airing, when episodes were often having final touches put on just days or a week before the episode actually aired. Since Books 3 and 4 were in various stages of production during Book 2, I doubt we'll experience delays.

Lost Game of Thrones, but now we have Legend of Korra and all is well, that is assuming it's the LoK we saw in season one and not the one we saw in season two. I wouldn't go as far to say I wasn't a fan of season two but there were huge problems, not the least of which being that only a handful of episodes were animated by studio Mir, studio Mir's animation is fucking incredible, studio Pierrot (who animated much of season two) is a goddamned joke, their stuck is minimalist and rushed, it's unpleasant to watch. Which in contrast to the season one animation which was at times quite frankly film quality was incredibly disappointing for me as a fan of animation.

I've been hearing good things about Rectify, I might check it out eventually. My internet was disconnected for two weeks though so I'm still working my way through the huge backlog of stuff, it will be awhile before I start something new.

Very excited about this. Book 2 was great and I can't wait to see how Book 3 changes things. The trailers shows so much that it's hard to see what all is going to happen. Very excited that we are finally going to see some prominent Airbending.

Wow that's really soon. Three back to back episodes is neat though because I feel this show might be better binge-material than 22 minutes every week. I just hope the episodes work back to back instead of like something major happening in episode one and then immediately after the characters saying "can you believe that thing that happened two weeks ago?" In episode two haha

I just found out today too from a different site about next weeks premiere. I wasn't sure if I should be excited or still disappointed (season 2 finale just kinda left a mediocre taste on my mouth). I just hope the plot is a bit more fleshed out in the next season. And I really hope they show more of the old characters (like that old scar faced guy in the trailer).
