YOU ARE SO NOT WELCOME NEWS

... In arguably the worst possible news for MTV's Awkward. (the only thing more terrible would be Ashley Rickards quitting the show), showrunner and creator Lauren Iungerich is departing after the currently on-hiatus third season wraps up. MTV is likely ordering a fourth season, dependent on who they find to replace Iungerich. But Iungerich's very funny and talented voice was all over the series, and the loss of her will be, like, totally obvs. The word on her departure is that it was a combination of work and personal reasons, which sounds to me like MTV blew it. But what do I know? Maybe Iungerich just didn't want to be rich and powerful and famous anymore. [Deadline Hollywood]

BUSINESS TIME

... MTV has canceled Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous after one season. Well! I didn't even know the comedy starring Bo Burnham had even started. Great promotion, MTV! [THR]

... CNN has announced the return of shout-fest Crossfire, this time with co-hosts Newt Gingrich, S.E. Cupp, Stephanie Cutter, and Van Jones all making their point with volume. Look Listen for it this fall. [THR]

... TLC is going to air a British documentary about a man with 10-stone (140-pound) testicles. No date has been set yet, but you might as well record every hour of TLC until then because YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS. Why yes, I do have a trailer. [Digital Spy]

... FX is developing a TV version of the book Mohicans, which served as the source material for the film The Last of the Mohicans. The idea would be to make it a miniseries that follows the development of America as seen through the eyes of the characters from the books. [THR]

CASTING NEWS

... Funny guy, Burning Love sexy fireman, and Childrens Hospital sexy Jewish doctor Ken Marino has booked a season-long arc on HBO's Eastbound & Down. This is about as perfect casting as perfect casting gets. In the comedy starring Danny McBride as a former pro baseball player, Marino will play "a middle-aged athlete who's still living the high life and partying it up." But wait, there's more! Tim Heideker, of Tim & Eric fame, will also join the series in a recurring role. He'll play a neighbor of McBride's Kenny Powers who is a painfully regular guy. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Elementary's Sherlock Holmes has an older brother, and we'll all get to meet him in Season 2. Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man's the Lizard, Human Nature) will play Mycroft Holmes and I'm pretty convinced that he could actually be Jonny Lee Miller's real-life brother. Mycroft will appear in the premiere episode, where the two brothers will confront their recent falling-out after Sherlock heads to Jolly Old Londontown. [CBS via press release]

... In today's The Leftovers news, the show has added The Secret Circle's Chris Zylka. In the Damon Lindelof drama about those left behind after the Rapture, Zylka will play a college dropout who settles under the wing of a guru. Okay, sure. This show is sounding weirder and weirder with each detail that's released. I'm so in. [Deadline Hollywood

... TLC's Who Do You Think You Are?, which is being revived by TLC after cancellation by NBC, has announced the celebs who will let Lisa Kudrow poke around their families' pasts and talk about them on TV (minus the "your great granddad was a Nazi sympathizer" part). Here they are: Christina Applegate, Kelly Clarkson, Cindy Crawford, Zooey Deschanel, Chelsea Handler, Chris O'Donnell, Jim Parsons, and Trisha Yearwood. Who Do You Think You Are? debuts July 23 on TLC. [TLC via press release]

... 1980s dreamboat Andrew McCarthy will guest-star on CBS's summer drama Unforgettable. He'll play a rich dude who enlists Carrie's help to get his kidnapped young daughter back. [THR

SURE, WHY NOT? NEWS

... Now that our government has come to its senses and DOMA has been stricken down in the Supreme Court, Modern Family is already thinking about a marriage for Cam and Mitchell. Sure, why not? [EW]

Interesting Awkward news. I'm not going to freak out over it or anything though, Awkward's a fun show to watch, but the series has always had its flaws (maybe more so this season).

I wonder if Lauren Iungerich leaving has anything to do with the additional episodes that were ordered for the third season? This would seem to be happening a lot, with Mike Kelley leaving Revenge over it. Obviously it means twice the amount of work, and like Revenge, the quality of Awkward has been decreasing in the fans' opinions, so I could see this as being part of it. But as long as Tamara's 'voice' remains intact I'm sure whoever takes over the show will do fine in keeping in intact.

Revenges' creator Mike Kelley won't be returning to the series when it comes back for a third season.

Geez that REALLY sucks for Awkward (what is it with showrunners leaving all their shows lately? Or does this happen frequently and I just never notice?). I hope they have an alternate script planned for the finale if it doesn't get picked up, which will piss me off even more. The first half of the season was pretty slow starting, but I think the second half will be a lot better. If it does get renewed, I'd just make Awkward's fourth season it's last so it can have a guaranteed shot of ending properly.

I would argue Zach Stone getting cancelled is worse news than Awkward losing it's show runner, at least it will still be on the air (likely). MTV did a piss poor job of promoting it, if more people saw it or even just knew it existed then I'm sure it would have gotten consistent rating and been picked up. Why even both producing a show if you're not going to front the cash to try and make sure it succeeds?

Mitchell and Cam getting married could be a great 5th season premire for Modern Family? It would be a very funny episode. I hope that ABC gives Modern Family the option to have a hour-long premire, and that it would feature Mitchell and Cam's wedding. It would be a hilarious episode, and way better than the fourth season premire.

I think it would be better if they built up to it over several episodes, though. It would be hilarious - you know Cam would make a huge deal out of everything and probably stress Mitchell out lol.

Yeah, true, but that could be done in an hour long episode where throughout the episode all of that happens and then finally at the end they get married.

I don't think I could take another season of "Who Do You Think You Are?." After a while it tends to cover the same stuff and much of it seems to be how some person or group abused or mistreated another. The fact is, most people in the past had dull, ordinary lives just like people do today.

I don't think I'd have the courage to have a show made about my freak testicles. That dude has some balls for doing it -_-

Bo Burnham was in a show??? I did not know that! And now its already cancelled. Boo.
The Leftovers is looking better and better! Hope its picked up.

I just hope that FX decides to tweak certain parts of Cooper's novel. For example, lets not have unnecessary exposition conversations when we are supposed to be SNEAKING through the woods and HIDING from our enemies! Also hope the dialogue isn't on the wordy side... Am I right Twain?

I know right? Can they have aired the pilot yet so I can stop hearing about all this great casting news every three days? I'm getting too excited.

after how stupid dramatic this season has been so far, I'll welcome a new 'voice' to the show, as long as it's not ruined.

I heard about Zach Stone a week before it premiered, if even that long, so it's promotion was little to none... and to top it off they gave it a horrible time slot of Thursdays at 11/10c. it was doomed from the start.

With the huge following that Bo Burnham has, it's hard to believe Zach Stone was barely watched. Then again, MTV never really promoted or repeated it throughout the week. The show was consistently hilarious and will be missed. Sadly, yet another one-and-done for the network.

the problem is the horrible timeslot they gave it in addition to little to no promotion for it. I only heard about it the week before it premiered, if even that far in advance.
Reply
Flag
Does it repeat anything throughout the week besides reality trash, I mean I would have expected MTV to repeat the latest episodes Awkward and Teen Wolf a few times a week, but they don't which is kind of lame.
Reply
Flag
Well, I usually recorded Awkward through repeats (mainly in the mornings). Teen Wolf doesn't repeat all that much anymore, which is strange because both shows are still doing great in the ratings.

I was not crazy about Awkwards first half of season 3, so maybe a new showrunner is a good thing, or it could be a very bad thing, who knows. New showrunners don't have to be a bad thing. It was for Community, but Dan Harmon was Community. Arguably a new showrunner made The Walking Dead better, after the lackluster first half of season 2, but then they lost him after a great first half of season 3, but then we had a lackluster second half. So maybe a new showrunner will be good for Awkward. Only time will tell.

I agree, the show has become way too preachy for my taste. The whole pregnancy scare was so annoying and unnecessary. Also the sex discussion between Matty and Jenna's parents was tasteless. I get it, I get it, you shouldn't have sex! It's bad! 0_o < It felt like I was watching "The Secret Life of the American Teenager"......p.s. I hate that show! <

Also they've turned Jake into a complete and total tool with no own free will or personality whatsoever. It felt nothing like Seasons 1 and 2.

I'm just relieved Mycroft is still a male.
It's about time 'Mrs' Hudson got a permanent spot - or was a transexual too brave for the network after all?

1. That trailer made me feel TERRIBLE for originally thinking this was going to be an awesome documentary.

2. I assumed Who Do You Think You Are would have like no name "celebrities" but most of those people are legit! Might actually watch the Zooey Deschanel episode (but probably not...)

My worst possible news for MTV is that they need to take a time machine back 30 years ago.I would gladly sit down with young people and ask why you don't want music videos??? ARGGHHH!! Rock it out like we know how so let's make the Portlandia ep. come true!! haha.

Mycroft! I would've dreaded this near the beginning of last year, but Elementary's really come into its own. I expect good things and good chemistry.

As for Awkward., ehh. I don't think I'll mind a shuffling over there. If the new person says anything similar to "It's time Jenna got over herself" or "Enough with the damn voiceovers," they'll have a new best friend.

The original book was called The Last of the Mohicans, like the movie. It's only the tv series that will just be called Mohicans.

Man, The Leftovers is putting together a pretty crazy (in a good way) cast! Will definitely have to check it out when it eventually debuts.

While Awkward. needs Iungerich, can't say that the show has been as good these last two seasons (our reviews got downright nasty in S2). Hopefully they'll find someone with the same kind of distinctive voice who can rescue the show from its endless love triangles

You're right it is sad. Sad that i don't watch a useless channel because I'm too busy at my job or spending time with my girl and son. Yeah sucks to be me right

I get you're trying to say that MTV sucks... but you're using the "lazy poor ppl use foodstamps" type argument to say it. Your favorite show in the world could be NCIS and your own argument could be used against you. Do better dude.

I'm sure a lot of people on this site have jobs and significant others. What they watch in their spare time has nothing to do with that. Just because you don't watch MTV doesn't mean it's useless and that people who do enjoy it don't have brains...

It has two great shows, I'm not going to defend Teen Mom or any of their reality shows, or even a good amount of their failed shows, but Teen Wolf and Awkward are awesome.
