N/A: School Year In Japan, the school year begins on April 1. This first semester lasts until about July 20 when summer vacation begins. The second semester begins in early September and lasts until late December. Winter break follows the second semester, and the students return in January for the final semester, which lasts until late March.
Yukari: Well, now that we've cleaned up the desks, I'm going to introduce her. Cleaning is an important part of the student's life, as they have a traditional souzi touban, or cleaning, of the classroom. Every week a different group does the cleaning. Every quarter or so, there's an o-souzi ("big cleaning"), and it's like America spring cleaning.
Tomo: "She's probably equipped with an amazing "Tsukkomi!"
There is a comedy act in the Kansai region in which one person says something stupid (Boke) and the other person corrects them (Tsukkomi) through some form of physical contact, usually a light beating or witty commentary.
Miss Yukari: "You don't have to strain yourself and speak standard." She is referring to the fact that Ayumu is from Osaka, and Yukari believes that everyone from Osaka naturally speaks with a Kansai dialect.
