It is possible that the romantic storyline between Maggie and Elliot was abruptly written out of the series because by this time, Julia Duffy expressed her unhappiness with the show's development and opted not to return for a second season. Putting closure on this storyline allowed for a smooth flow to next season's changes. (Glad they ended the romance with a reason instead of just leaving it with no explanation like some series do.)
