  • It's all hitting the fan!

Alright, i'm going to pull a Trek comparison again, but it's just for imagery!

You know in Generations when the Enterprise is caught in the gravity of Veridian III, and there's that moment when it is past the point of no return, there is no getting out of it, the ship is crashing. At that moment, Data lets out an "ohhh.... shit!"

    That moment summarises this 3-parter.

Absolutely brilliant stuff, and a really solid third part. It's just absolutely breathtaking, and really makes the show. An easy 10, here.moreless
  • Probably Babylon 5's best episode - a blaze of glory

    10
This and the last two episodes are simply amazing - three episodes which really push the story arc forwards. This episode offers an amazing display of character development and overall story development in one.

Delenn proves her valor, so does G'Kar, aber this episode is the final proof that Sheridan is destined for greatness. This single episode offers more than many excellent movies and completes Babylon 5's transformation from a mere space station with diplomatic importance to the pivotal place in the galaxy.

Sheridan the soldier becomes the leader who is required to retake Earth from an Adolf Hitler-like President Clark and to defeat the Shadoes once and for all.moreless

Two destroyers and two heavy cruisers jump in

and launch fighters ,sheridan tries to reason with the commander but he opens fire.

the battle is intense and ivanova has her fighter destroyed.

the station takes heavy damage and is boarded by several squads of marines.Sheridan destroys one of the enemy ships

and the churchill`s captain ,with her ship badley damaged ,does a kamakaze against the enemy.

The narns and the human soldiers engage the boarding marines

and many are shot or stabbed in brutal close quaters fighting in down below.Even mister garibaldi is injured.

As it looks like a bloody victory until more earth ships arrive and order their surrender. As 3 more jump points form sheridan closes his eyes and thinks hes a dead man walking.

Minbari ship spill througth the jump points and the earth ships retreat ,deelen has broken the grey council and convienced some to follow her lead.

  • One of the best, if not the best, episode of Babylon 5

    10
This is it. This is their stand. Last two episodes have been amazing but this one is even better. It is amazing episode, packed from the start to end with all kind of action, stunning space battles, brilliant writing, hard moments and decisions, amazing acting. This is just episode you can watch and watch again.

I love the way they show the decisions they are making. They are not just heroes. You could get the story and bring it out easily.. but no, they are making it as hard as it is, showing all the aspects of human heart, showing that it is not easy for them to fire their own people even for protect themselves. It is not easy for them to take such a huge step. But they do and how that is done.. stunning.

And even if it is Sheridan and co episode, it is also Delenn's. I just love the lines she has, going to the Council, all the things she says. They knew it was coming, but they did not acted. Now she does. And it is brilliant, the moment when the first wave of fight is over.. and new hyperpoints forming and they know they cannot take it much longer.. and she comes. It might have been best moment on Sheridan's life, but it for sure, was best moment of that episode.

So powerful, so stunning and so hard on emotion. Amazing episode.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • This episode was a source of continuity debates. In a scene destroyers, Roanoke and Agrippa, exit the jump gate. Two cruisers exit the gate with them, along with many fighters. Many fans observed that during the fight, neither one of the cruisers is mentioned or shown. JMS specifically addressed this issue, noting that they didn't have time in the episode to show every single ship being destroyed. They are present in the wide shot as the battle begins.

    • During the battle Sheridan orders a solution on the Roanoke, which is promptly destroyed by the Churchill by ramming it. Then they fire on the Agrippa destroying her, but the CGI depicts the Roanoke.

    • While filming this episode, actor Jerry Doyle broke his arm at the wrist. This is why he appears in later episodes in a sling. Notice that at the end of the fight, when Zack is helping him to the ground, he doesn't move his right arm.

  • QUOTES (17)

    • Sheridan: Babylon Control to all Starfury Squadrons. Stand by to attack, but do not, repeat, do not initiate combat. Let them fire first. We won't start this fight, but, by God, we'll finish it.

    • Ivanova: Should we ask Draal to help with the defense?
Sheridan: No. He's our ace in the hole. I want to keep him a secret as long as we can. This is our fight, not his.

    • Delenn: Three years. For three years I warned you this day was coming. But you would not listen. Pride, you said, presumption. And now the Shadows are on the move. The Centauri and the younger worlds are at war, the Narns have fallen. Even the Humans are fighting one another. The pride was yours, the presumption was yours. For a thousand years we have been awaiting for fulfillment of prophecy, and when it finally happens, you scorn it, you reject it. Because you no longer believe it yourselves. "We stand between the candle and the star, between the darkness and the light." You say the words, but your hearts are empty, your ears closed to the truth. You stand for nothing but your own petty interests. "The problems of others are not our concern." I do not blame you for standing silent in your shame. You, who knew what was coming, but refused to take up the burden of this war. If the warrior caste will not fight, then the rest of us will. If the Council has lost its way, if it will not lead, if we have abandoned our covenant with Valen, the Council should be broken, as was prophesied. We must stand with the others now, before it's too late. Between the worker caste and the religious caste we control two thirds of our forces. Do you, I say, listen to the voice of your conscience? Break the Council, and come with me. Our time of isolation is over. We move now, together, or not at all.

    • Sheridan's Father: John, I can't imagine the kind of decisions that are going through your mind right now. I'm sure they're not easy. The important ones never are. But when push comes to shove, you've always done the right thing. What was the first lesson I ever taught you?
Sheridan: Never start a fight, but always finish it.

    • Minbari: (about Delenn's wish to speak with Grey Council) I told you, Delenn, they will not speak to you.
Delenn: Then they will listen to me. I served the Council for 16 cycles. I was the chosen of Dukhat to replace him. I held him when he died. His blood is on my hands, his spirit in my eyes, his word on my lips. You will step aside in his name and mine, or... in Valen's name, I will tear this ship apart with my bare hands until I find them. Move aside.

    • Sheridan: I know we're all hoping to avoid a head-on confrontation with Earth, that somehow we could... stop this train before it went off-track. But this train is heading right for us, and there's not a lot of time.

    • Delenn: G'Kar, thank you for your help. I think that you are no longer quite the same person I met when I came here four years ago

    • Lennier: Delenn, please be careful. The Grey Council is not what it was. They may not receive you well, if they will see you at all.
Delenn: They will see me whether they like it or not. It's time someone made them face reality.

    • Major Ryan: (about President Clark) He spent the last year putting his people in key places. Anyone who raises a voice is immediately arrested and charged with treason. Under conditions like that, it's... it's easier to keep quiet.

    • Sheridan: We have just been thrust into the middle of extraordinary events. So we must approach this calmly and rationally. Those are not the enemy out there. We wear the same uniforms, and we've both sworn to uphold the Constitution. They're as loyal to Earth as you are, and we will render humanitarian aid to them. Because .. as much as our humanity .. got us into this .. our humanity's the only thing that's going to get us out again.

    • G'Kar: Ambassador.
Delenn: (about wounded Minbari) Can you carry him very far?
G'Kar: As far as you like.

    • Londo: If you ask me, I know the real problem. Ever since the Earthers put Narns on their security force, everything here has gone to hell. They're not very efficient, you know. You have to keep an eye on them at all times.

    • Delenn: We stand between the candle and the star, between the darkness and the light.

    • Trainor: Direct hits to decks fourteen and fifteen ... hull integrity down twenty percent.
Major Ryan: Bring us in closer to the enemy.
      Trainor: How close?
Major Ryan: Right down their throats!

    • Ryan: Hiroshi, get out of there. Get to the life pods.
Hiroshi: (over the comm) Too late to get out. Our primary systems are hit. We've got fire on all decks now. (exhales) There's nothing we can do except...
Ryan: Hiroshi?! Horoshi! (Hiroshi's ship rams into another ship destroying both)

    • Sheridan: May I have your attention please. In the last few hours, we have learned that warships are coming this way from Earth, their orders are to seize command of Babylon 5 by force. As commanding officer and military governor of Babylon 5, I cannot allow this to happen. President Clark has violated the Earth Alliance Constitution by dissolving the Senate, declaring martial law, and personally ordering the bombing of civilian targets on the Mars colony. He is personally responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent people. Following these attacks Orion 7 and Proxima 3 have broken away from the Earth Alliance, and declared independence. Babylon 5 now joins with them! As of this moment, Babylon 5 is seceding from the Earth Alliance! We will remain an independent state until President Clark is removed from office!

    • Delenn: This is Ambassador Delenn of the Minbari, Babylon 5 is under our protection. Withdraw, or be destroyed!
Attack Fleet Officer: Negative! We have authority here! Do not force us to engage your ship!
Delenn: Why not? Only one Human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari fleet. He is behind me! You are in front of me! If you value your lives, be somewhere else!

  • NOTES (3)

    • Joe Straczynski met actor Everett McGill on the set of Twin Peaks and wanted to cast him in the role of Major Ryan. Unfortunately, he could only remember the actor's last name and his staff contacted Bruce McGill to play the role. While this surprised Straczysnki when he arrived on set, it became a happy accident as he was very pleased with McGill's performance.

    • General Hague was supposed to return for this episode. But the actor, Robert Foxworth, got booked on the Star Trek series Deep Space Nine on the same week. So, they had to write him out of the story. Coincidentally on Deep Space Nine Foxworth plays an Admiral attempting a military coup.

    • This episode won the 1997 Hugo for "Best Dramatic Presentation."
Terry O'Bright, Keith Rogers and Linda Coffey were nominated for the 1997 C.A.S. Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Television Series" for this episode.
