In the previous episode Delenn, Ivanova, and Sheridan were reviewing Sheridan's visions on the Streib ship and one of the last ones was the 'Man Inbetween' who was Sheridan's equal and opposite and was looking for Sheridan now. On Z'ha'dum Justin says "Think of me as a middle man." Justin is Sheridan's counterpart on the Shadow side, the 'Nexus' as he calls Sheridan but for the Shadows and their servant races. Justin was the Shadows' tool to influence the younger races that agreed with them, just as Sheridan was the Vorlons' tool to galvanize the younger races into a single force.
The wedding pictures Anna is looking at while she is in John's quarters are the actual pictures from Bruce Boxleitner's and Melissa Gilbert's wedding.
When Sheridan is brought before Justin, Sheridan asks "Who are you?" of Justin. Justin became visibly annoyed at the question since it is the basic philosophical question of the Vorlons. The question that Justin's masters, the Shadows, ask is "What do you want?"
The recorded message of Anna Sheridan for her husband (originally done by Beth Toussaint in the episode "Revelations") was rerecorded word for word by Melissa Gilbert for this episode.
At the beginning of the episode, we see the Minbari cruisers around the station, as they have been since Babylon 5 broke away from earth. When the shadow vessels arrive, no Minbari cruisers can be seen anywere.
Continuity: At the end of the previous episode, "Shadow Dancing," when Delenn drops the snow globe, the base bounces away from the camera and slightly to the viewer's right but remaining in view. When that scene is recapped in the teaser of this episode, the base bounces sharply to the viewers left and out of the frame.
Anna Sheridan: As soon as we landed we picked up an energy source. We were told to check it out. And that's where we found them. John Sheridan: The Shadows. Anna Sheridan: Well, it's a very dramatic name but not a very descriptive one. Their actual name is 10.000 letters long. I couldn't pronounce it if I tried. And I have. They were quite approachable. John Sheridan: Tell that to the rest of the crew.
Sheridan: Who are you? Justin: Who decides that the workday is from nine to five instead of eleven to four? Who decides that the hemlines will be below the knee this year, and short again next year? Who draws up the borders, controls the currency, handles all of the decisions that happen transparently around us? Sheridan: I don't know. Justin: Ahhh... I am with them. Same group, different department. Think of me as a sort of middle man. And the name is Justin.
Delenn: John, you must believe me. I didn't know she was alive. We assumed that she had died with the rest of the crew of the Icarus. That only Morden had survived. Sheridan: And had you known, would you have told me? Delenn: It would depend. It would depend on what she had become. Z'Ha'Dum is the homeworld of the Shadows. No one leaves there the same as they arrived. Sheridan: You would've denied me the right to make that choice? How can you say that, and expect me to ever trust you again? Delenn: John... I do love you. If you believe nothing else I ever say, please... Please believe that.
Anna Sheridan: Don't you wanna know what it's all about? What it's really all about? I can do that. All you have to do is come with me. John Sheridan: Where? Anna Sheridan: Where else? To Z'Ha'Dum.
Garibaldi: I'll take care of... [Garibaldi takes a look at the instructions Sheridan just gave him] Garibaldi: Son of a bitch! Sheridan: It's against regulations to address a senior officer in those terms, Mr Garibaldi.
G'Kar: It was the end of the Earth year 2260 and the war had paused suddenly and unexpectedly. All around us, it was as if the universe were holding its breath...waiting. All of life can be broken down into moments of transition...or moments of revelation. This had the feeling of both.
G'Quon wrote, "There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way." The war we fight is not against powers and principalities. It is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope...the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender.
The future is all around us, waiting in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.
Justin: Back, a million years ago, there were forces prowling around the galaxy, beyond anything that we could understand. And, like anything else, most of them outgrew this little corner of the universe and headed off toward greener pastures. Now two of them stayed behind. Shepherds, you might call them. They wanted to look after the younger races. Bring them around, help them evolve into something better. Morden: One of these was the Vorlons, the other was what you call the Shadows. Justin: The Vorlons are like your parents I suppose. They want you to play nice, be in your room, do it by the rules. I guess you could call them Lords Of Order. Anna: The others, the ones who live here, believe that strength only comes from conflict. They want to release our potential, not bottle it up. Justin: It's really simple. You bring two sides together, they fight. A lot of them die. But those who survive are stronger, smarter and better. Morden: It's like knocking over an anthill. Every new generation gets stronger, the anthill gets redesigned, made better. Sheridan: So, that's what the Shadows do. Come out every few thousand years and kick over all the anthills. Start wars, destroy entire races. Justin: A few get lost along the way, yes, and that's unfortunate. I don't think it was ever easy. But you can't let that get in the way of the dream.
Delenn: The humans have a saying: "What is past, is prologue"
Sheridan: And finally I heard what you said when I left. And I want you to know ... that I love you Delenn. Goodbye.
