Episode Summary

EDIT
A Verne by Any Other Name
AIRED:
Kids begin teasing Verne about his name, and he can't take it. He figures a new, cool name will get them all to lay off. However, Doc and Clara don't want him to change it, as it comes from their favorite author. In 1800s France and with Marty in tow, Verne appeals to his very namesake for a help – a long shot obviously doesn't pay off. They then travel to shortly before Verne was born, and he pitches different names to his parents' past-selves. More failure awaits, but bigger problems loom – Clara goes into labor and only Verne can help deliver his younger self.moreless

      • Title: "A Verne by Any Other Name"

References a line from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Speaking about Romeo, the man she loves but who bears the name of her family's enemy, Juliet says "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet", in other words even he were not called Romeo he would still be the man she loves

Verne tries to get Jules Verne to change his name to Bart Simpson-- the 10-year-old son of the Simpson family in The Simpsons. In 1992, when this episode aired, Bart Simpson was often criticized for encouraging bad behaviour in schools with his "underachiever and proud of it" attitude, so he would naturally appeal to someone like Verne. :-)
