  • Stunning visually, but not in terms of story.

I ran into this series through an anime blog I follow. Based on the screenshots shown, I thought at the least I would be entertained visually if nothing else. And well... that's pretty much what happened.

The plot of the first episode can be summarized in less than five minutes, if that. However, in typical anime fashion, it took much longer for things to be established. Characters were introduced somewhat sloppily, leaving viewers with little to like about any of the characters except for their overall designs. Minute details seemed to be blown up to a ridiculous proportion. Even having watched the episode twice, I still cannot fully comprehend the meaning behind some of the lines. Perhaps it's just something lost in translation?

Regardless, what really saved the episode for me would be the plethora of interesting imagery showered throughout the episode. Considering how much the episode relies on such, there must be a better plot coming around the corner, right? When it comes to "artsy" anime such as this, that is route taken: visuals first, plot later.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • When Koyomi Araragi refers to Hitagi Senjougahara as a 'tsundora' he is refering to the Japanese word for tundra often used in otaku culture to describe a character archetype who is cold, detached and often uncaring towards others.

    • When Hitagi Senjougahara refers to herself as a 'Tsundere' she is refering to the Japanese character archetype which describes a person with a combative personality that suddenly becomes modest and loving when triggered by some cause such as being alone with someone they like.

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Tsubasa: Avoiding the situation probably would've been the correct decision. No. Actually, it might've been the wrong one. Why? Because her body felt extremely light. Yes, her. I said absolutely nothing to Senjōgahara about her weight.

    • Araragi: Hanekawa, do you like bananas?
Tsubasa: Well, I don't exactly hate them and they're good for you, so if I have to pick... I guess I like them.
Araragi: Like or dislike, don't ever eat one at school.
      Tsubasa: Huh?
Araragi: Well, just eating is okay, but I'd never forgive you for leaving one on the stairs!

    • Senjougahara: My ass is sore. And my skirt has wrinkles.
      Araragi: Not my fault.
Senjougahara: Don't make excuses, or I'll cut it off.
      Araragi: (unfazed) Cut what off?

    • Senjougahara: Don't get the wrong idea. This doesn't mean that I'm letting my guard down.
Araragi: You say you haven't let your guard down...
Senjougahara: If I fail to make my every-minute reports, a gang of 5,000 brutes will attack your whole family.
Araragi: You'll be okay. Don't worry.
Senjougahara: Is one minute even long enough?
Araragi: What am I, a boxer?

    • Senjougahara: My abusive language is alchemized through 40 kg copper, 25 kg of zinc, 15 kg of nickel, 5 kg of ice that keeps my cool, and 97 kg of spite.
      Araragi: Mostly spite?!
Senjougahara: FYI, I was just kidding about the ice that keeps my cool.
Araragi: You got rid of the most important element!

    • Oshine: I can't stomach that victimized face of yours, little miss.
