  Jerome "Dizzy" Dean (1910-1074) was anMajor League pitcher who played with St. Louis Cardinals, the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Browns in the 30's and 40's. A much admired hurler, he was also celebrated for his scewball personality and comic antics.

  Dietrich refers to Wilma and Estelle as Lucy and Ethel, namely Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz played by Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance on the TV classic I Love Lucy (1951-1957). The two women were close friends best known for the wacky hi-jinks they would unmeaningly get themselves into.
